This week’s movies actually open on Wednesday.  This week, the summer movie season starts to wind down… just 3 weeks remaining after this weekend… with just a few blockbusters remaining.. most of the movies the rest of this month are smaller-budget movies…

“Pineapple Express”

(Rated:R for pervasive language, drug use, sexual references and violence) (1 hr, 51 min)

Genre: Comedy/Crime/Thriller/Stoners

Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride, Kevin Corrigan, Gary Cole, Rosie Perez

Director: David Gordon Green - “Snow Angels” (2007)

The Plot: A stoner and his dealer are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder.

The Buzz: A new kind of ”stoner comedy” with action/adventure added in… some are calling it the raunchier big brother of last year’s “Superbad”

My Bottom Line: Its been marketed as a Stoner action/comedy, but we’ll see if it has enough wide ranging appeal to take on “The Dark Knight”.

Laff fact: 5th movie this year from Comedic Producer Judd Apatow with “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Drillbit Taylor”, “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”, “Step Brothers” earlier this year.

“Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2”

(Rated:PG-13 for mature material and sensuality) (1 hr, 57 min)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance/Adventure

Starring: Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Rachael Nichols

Director: Sanaa Hamri - “Something New” (2006)

The Plot: Based on Ann Brashares’ best-selling series of novels about four young women who share an unbreakable bond through the unpredictable events of their lives, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″ catches up with Tibby, Carmen, Bridget and Lena in the months following their first year of college.

The Buzz: Hardcore fans of the book and fans of the first movie love it… mixed reviews from the rest of us.

My Bottom Line: This is a obvious target for the younger female audience, we’ll see how it fares against the summer blockbusters and even the success of “Mamma Mia!”

Laff fact: This sequel is actually an adaptation of the fourth book in the series.
