Palin takes center stage !

September 3rd, 2008 at 8:11 pm by Rick Albin under News

10:27 pm: Alaskan Gov. Palin is just taking the stage to give an important speech at the RNC.

9:51 pm: Gov. Palin is expected to speak within the next 35 minutes.  What do you think she needs to accomplish?

9:28 pm: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has just taken the stage.

9:19 pm: Massachussetts Governor and the son of a former Michigan Governor, Mitt Romney just finished addressing the RNC.  Did his speech win over any votes in Michigan?

Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sara Palin will speak at the GOP convention in a little more than two hours.

I will be here to chat with you live at 10pm.

What do you think Gov. Palin needs to achieve in tonight’s speech?

Is it more important that she talks about her professional live, her personal life or answer her critics that say she is not qualified?

Is there anything that she can say that will change your mind one way or the other?

Will you be watching?

Blog away. I’ll be here at 10pm.

I find it difficult to under stand how Wood TV can go from a show with a celebrity host whos morals should be questioned by every right thinking American to questioning the morals of a teenager. I do not see a value in promoting Ellen and then suggesting a Mother can stop the raging hormones of a teen. It is not an issue in this or any other campaign. We as Americans have been told over and over that the values and morals of our fathers and mothers are no longer valid today. That if we find homosexuality and lesbianism disdusting we are homophobic. I am here to tell you that this is the kind of thinking that is undermining our country. If we continue to let the celebreties set our values and morals we will lose the rights and freedoms that allow them a voice to begin with. I do not suggest that we should legislate morality, I suggest we do not force feed our children with wrong thinking by making it popular.

  3. Don Wozniak says:

Rick, your assignment editor should put you on the “police beat” until after the election. Your Republican, right-wing bias is really coming to the surface. You become almost “giddy ” when “reporting” about McSame and Palin. Can you you temper your adulation with some objective analysis? Until then, I’m going to Channel 13.

  4. Steve says:

I want to know y neither canidate brought up y president Clinton signed the free trade agreement. And why when he new were Osama was did not end it there

  5. Jason says:

Of course there is going to be a conservative bias, this is W. Michigan. Go to Conneticut and get down on them for beign too left-wing. It’s the area we live in.
Look to Geha, she seems to get giddy about the Dems as much as Tom VanHowe did about the Republicans.

  6. Ann Teichet says:

You asked earlier this AM what questions I would like asked of Sarah Palin, I have several:

Did she become involved in the PTA in Walsilla because she wanted to promote the teaching of creationism and teenage “abstinence only” in the schools?

What would she do about closing Guantonomo?

What does she think of McCain’s position of “BOMB,BOMB, BOMB,BOMB Iran?

Would she still invade Iraq, knowing the truth about weapons of mass destruction (and their absence)?

On what scientific basis is her disbelief in “global warning” based?

If the USA follows the Republican chant of “drill, baby, drill”, what percentage of foreign oil imports can be replaced by US production (provided we drill in Anwar and in all off shore available oil prospects)?

How many years would it take the USA to achieve the percentage of production quoted above?

Shooting wolves from helicopters would appear to be a rather expensive sport. Does she own her own helicopter? How much gas is used on such an expedition?

Who financed her run for Governor of Alaska?

I could think of more, but this would do for a start. What I don’t want to hear about is her special needs child or her teen age daughter who is pregnant. Millions of other people face similar problems. How she deals with those does not interest me. I would think they would be a distraction for most people, but they had better not be for a Vice President with an elderly President. Enough said.

  7. Chad says:

I am sickened by the biased reporting of Wood TV.

  8. Ricky says:

Wow this is pretty slanted to the right isnt it.

So I’m just wondering…what was McCain’s plan to fix the economy again? I understand he was a POW and he loves Iraq but economy, the environment, renewable energy, strained foreign relations, etc. Those are the real issues I care about.

Oh and Sarah Palin, do you believe in separation of church and state? And if not then why not, it’s in the constitution. Oh and drilling for oil would truly benefit your state greatest wouldnt it? Along with the $27million in earmarks.

I believe people need to stop voting on religion and faith and start voting on policies. Look what happened the last 2 times you voted on faith.

  9. Dave says:

The last time I voted on faith, Carter was elected the first time. As for the slanted coverage, thank your national media for focusing on any dirt they can imagine regarding Govenor Palin.
I have a few questions I’d like to see answered by Senator Obama, but I note that is outside the scope of this thread.

Just an aside – Rick, you must be doing something right, since I thought you were mildly left-wing…:-)

  10. Rob says:

Im not impressed with Palin whatsoever. She’s Simply McSames “PUPPET ON A STRING”& I dont trust her Or MCSame any further than I could throw either one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Louise says:

I would just like to get the stand of the politician on the important issues, not on putting lipstick on a pig or anything about a pit bull. What are they going to do about my gas bills, food bills, the war or the loss of jobs in this state. We need to hear about this things so we can make an informed vote in November. Can the media please help us out and give us those parts of their speeches on a regular basis. Just please leave the name calling and bickering out of the news report. It makes them sound like a couple of little siblings that can’t get along for 5 minutes

  12. Dan says:

I am curious about the accuracy of polls. A normal poll (Gallop, etc.) takes in roughly 1,000 people. This is normally done through random landline calling. A large number of people have caller ID and do not answer random calls. I don’t. Also, many minorities and young voters only use cell phones. Are the polls baised without the input of these voters?

  13. James J. says:

Are the polls baised without the input of these voters?>

No, that’s how the poll was taken.

What are they going to do about my gas bills, food bills, the war or the loss of jobs in this state.>

Drill for oil right now to raise supply, katrina and rita prove drilling is not bad for the environment, food rises with inflation, the war must be won, and lower taxes on companies so they won’t move your jobs.
Obama is for raising their taxes, who will relay the cost to you, or move the jobs.

    She’s Simply McSames “PUPPET ON A STRING>

She fined a neocon 10k, and raised taxes on alaska’s oil companies; she’s an independent.

Oh and Sarah Palin, do you believe in separation of church and state?>

“[T]he LEGISLATURE, charged with the great interests of the community, may, and OUGHT TO countenance, AID AND PROTECT RELIGIOUS—institutions wisely calculated to direct men to the performance of all the duties arising from their connection with each other, and to prevent or repress those evils which flow from unrestrained passion.” OLIVER ELLSWORTH, Chief-Justice of the Supreme Court BY GEORGE WASHINGTON 1796-1800, U.S. SENATOR 1789-1796,
(Source: Connecticut Courant, June 7, 1802, p. 3, Oliver Ellsworth, to the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut)

“Our liberty depends on our education, our laws, and habits . . . it is founded on morals and religion, whose authority reigns in the heart, and on the influence all these produce on public opinion before that opinion governs rulers.” FISHER AMES, WROTE THE FINAL WORDING OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT, RATIFIED THE CONSTITUTION.
(Source: Fisher Ames, An Oration on the Sublime Virtues of General George Washington (Boston: Young & Minns, 1800), p. 23.)

    it’s in the constitution>

    Let’s see it?

Along with the $27million in earmarks>

    Palin is for cutting earmarks.

I believe people need to stop voting on religion and faith and start voting on policies. Look what happened the last 2 times you voted on faith.>

What are you talking about? Bush is no Christian.

Did she become involved in the PTA in Walsilla because she wanted to promote the teaching of creationism and teenage “abstinence only” in the schools?>

    Like the Founding Fathers would.

Would she still invade Iraq, knowing the truth about weapons of mass destruction (and their absence)?>

The war wasn’t about wmd’s, but al queda not getting wmd’s.

On what scientific basis is her disbelief in “global warning” based?>

You said the same thing in 1970, that the earth was going to freeze.

  14. Bill Christensen says:

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on Channel 8 news, before the McCain-Palin visit. A gushing woman saying ” she’s a woman, I’m a woman! She’s got five kids. I’ve got five kids! I’m voting for her. And then some guy saying she hunts. I hunt! That’s my ticket. That’s what this campaign has come to, Bread and circuses. I guess I should qualify that, at least in Rome they gave the bread to pacify the hungary masses. Michigan has been in it’s own mini recession with a procession of businesses leaving for the last six years. Doesn’t anyone care about the real issues? However, I guess that’s the real test of a campaign- confuse the voters with hoopla- and avoid that which really matters. This state needs jobs- meaningful jobs, so our young people don’t have to leave the state to find them. It needs an energy policy based not on fossil fuels- of which there is a finite supply. We need to concentrate on this country-not nation building, pouring money into a war we are not paying for.

Funny, I was going to make the same comment albeit it’s different event and two weeks later…

(I’ve already switched to Ch.13, watched WOOD by mistake!)

I am curious if anyone read the Detroit Free Free today about Palin? It cquotes her as calling Michigan a “mopey little state.” I have not heard anything on the news about this. If there was I am sorry I missed it. Here is the link for any interested. Maybe we can get more info about this.

When are the American people going to stand up and see just what the republicans have done to this country!!!! With 30 years (minus the 8 with Mr. Clinton) of staging a war on the middle class, how can anyone that is working or out of work, support them? With all the finance companys failing (While under republican control) and all the scandles, corruption, and misleading the U.S. public on the war, how can anyone in there right mind want to put another republican in charge????? When ever the democrats are in power, this country has allways prospers, when ever the republican are in power, we go down the tubes. So ……..I’m going to vote stright democrat, and get the bums out of there!!!!!!!!

  18. Right On Bill says:

Right on Bill!!! I don’t get it either. I cannot fathom the debt the last 8 years has brought and by the time “W” and his ilk leave office, it will be even worse. I AM A PROUD HILLARY DEMOCRAT! NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We cannot vote this man (and his little pit bull) into office to do 4 more years of what has been done over the last 8. We all must vote and vote for Obama…it’s too important this time!

  19. Ptolemy says:

Thanks Bill, your comments are terrific. I continue to be amazed that citizens of this country would give the republicans the time of day. The trickle up has worked well if your Halliburton, Bechtel, or Erik Prince from Black Water. We the people have decided , by voting republican, to give billions of our money to them!
And there is Tom DeLay, with Bible in one hand, giving more of our money away. Glad he resigned, but he should spent time with Abramoff in Jail!
I will proudly vote for Barack Obama!

  20. pikkel says:

I was as giddy as Rick Albin last night but for a different reason. I spent the evening phone banking for the Obama campaign, calling households in the Grand Rapids area. My first time ever. Number one issue: the economy. Some of the feedback: “McCain pushed to de-regulate Wall Street. How can he stand there and claim that greed drove us where we are?” Another: “Where is Phil Gramm (McCain former campaign co-chair and co-champion deregulator) NOW?” And my favorite from an elderly woman: “He wanted to privatize Social Security. I am so relieved.”

And you know what? I am conservative. I am a strong believer in free markets. I am a hunter and strong believer in the Second Amendment. Rick Albin and WOOD-TV misapprehend, and I dare say, underestimates the intelligence and downright savvy of its audience. No, Rick, the admission of 350 students does not mean the audience was not hand-picked. My friends at work, some of whom share my attitudes and some who don’t, tried to attend but were advised that admission and seating were controlled by the local Republican party. I am not complaining. I figure that is the way such things go. But PLEASE, Mr. Albin and WOOD-TV, don’t insult our intelligence by saying, “See, those college kids got in!” and tell is it was an open event.

  21. pikkel says:

Sorry for the typos. The dog needed to be let out. Correction: It is Dee Morrison who graces us with a separate story that the audience was not hand-picked. Hmmm, methinks the lady doth protest too much.

  22. william olthoff says:

We were watching the evening news tuesday at 5 & 6. listening to Rich Elbin, with segments of the candidates, he had segments of 3 for Obama, and 2 for McCain, 1 segment for Obama aprox. 1 full minute of prime time, other segment for McCain, aprox 15 seconds, we are getting very sick of Rick’s editorializing, not just giving the news. we can decide what we see. We have had enough of channel 8, NBC. We watched last night the reports of McCain & Pal in GR, on channel 13, ABC. what a refressing report, just the news. we will continue to watch channel 13 in the future. Thank you, William & Beth Olthoff

  23. william olthoff says:

sorry for the typo. Rick Elbin, should have read Rick Albin. William Olthoff

  24. Dave says:

An open note to Pikkei and Bill.

Dear Pikkei. Let’s look at your “conservative” credentials in turn, shall we?

You claim to be a supporter of free markets – yet support a candidate who intends to hobble those markets via the use of taxation, making US companies even less competitive in the open market. Oh, by the way, corporations need to pay those taxes out of revenues generated by sales – thus any new taxes get paid by the customer. Else the corporation goes out of business while rivals in lower-tax areas attract the business via lower prices (since they don’t have to pay taxes). Same with the rich..If “rich” people pay higher taxes, that leaves less money to invest in new businesses. Thus a “double whammy”.

The social programs Obama also intends to push for need to paid for…Taxes used in that case simply take from those who have and gives to those who don’t. If Obama and Biden truly care for the poor and downtrodden, why do their tax returns show such low amounts given to charity? Oh, they care, but with our money – not theirs.

Second – you claim to support the Second Amendment, yet support a candidate who has made it quite clear he does not in his voting record- particularly in the Chicago machine dominated Illinois legislature.

Given those facts, I doubt anything you have to say since the facts as known fail to support your conclusions above.

And, as a professor myself, anyone who fails to support their conclusions with facts, whether or not I agree with them, earns an “F”.

Oh, and Bill? Congress has been under Democrat control for some time, so I think your beef is at best misguided. Come to think of it, the CEOs of Freddie and Fannie Mae are huge Obama supporters, and it was the Democrats in charge of Congress who elected to turn a blind eye to the problems at those two firms…Hmm.

Looks like a lot of left-wing “talking points” being spewed in this thread. Fortunately, the American people are decent and capable of making up their own minds based on the facts.

    Dave

  25. mary L Belka says:

Mr. Albin. I recieved a phone call from the republican party stating that in a week or so I’ll recieve my absentee ballot , how they know is beyond me. They stated that if I made $49,000.00 and over that under the Obama economic plan I would have my taxes increased. I keep a close eye on poltics and I know this is a LIE. But what bothers me is the fact that the are distorting the truth and targeting the elderly with this nonsense , after all a good number of elderly do get absentee ballots. Its a outrageous nasty politics and preying on seniors. I think McCain is not a reformer but a dishonorable poltician. Shame on him. Mary

  26. Dave says:

I received that same type of phone call, Mary…I just wonder who is actually making them. If it is either party, I agree, that is a shame. Though I still stand by my earlier point re. higher corporate taxes actually being paid by the customers.

Incidentally, I’m only in my 50s and NEVER applied for an absentee ballot – but still got the call…:-)

    Dave

  27. pikkel says:

Do not expect any digging for any story from Mr. Albin or Ms. Morrison. If it is not fed them, they simply don’t report it. Case in point: Morrison’s reporting how open the McCain event was in GR. Come to find out, tickets were distributed through Republican headquarters (2000 in GR, 1000 in Kzoo) but someone tells her that the event is open and 350 students got in. That is what gets reported. These are reporters who have abandoned any training they have received as jounalists. Hey Rick, do you blush just a little when WOOD’s commercials suggest you actually investigate anything?

My suggestion on what appears to be the latest lie from the Republican party: Ask yourself how it reflects on the man’s character at the top of the ticket? Then tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your relatives, tell your co-workers, tell your fellow parishoners, tell any other voters you know.

  28. pikkel says:

I am so shocked I can barely type this. From John McCain:

“Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.”

So McCain, who now poses as the scourge of Wall Street, was praising financial deregulation like 10 seconds ago — and promising that if we marketize health care, it will perform as well as the financial industry!

    Grandpa is losing it, bigtime.

  29. Dave says:

    Pikkei…

Give it up. You’ve not supported anything you’ve said with facts.
Question for you: I’ve heard that the Obama campaign is actually paying people like you $7/hour to post misleading statements like yours on blogs like this..Would you confirm or deny this please? Thanks….:-)

    Dave

  30. pikkel says:

I don’t know anything about anyone being paid to post any statements. But thanks for the laugh. John McCain’s quotation, verbatim, word for word, can be found all over. Google a phrase from it and you will find it sourced all over. (Hint: Dave, when you see quotation marks, that is a clue that those words were actually spoken.)

Wait, I will save you the time. Here is one link: http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/09/the_truth_will_out.html.

There are many, many other sources of the same quotation. It was said by John McCain on September 20, 2008. Okay, Dave, it is time for you to shift over to “the liberal media” meme.

Dave, you are no longer even half a challenge.

    *yawn

    Peace.

  31. Cole says:

Pikkel is right. That statement from John McCain was reported in many newspapers from the Washington Post to the Tuscola Michigan County Advertizer. It scares me that McCain’s solution for everything from the mortgage crisis to social security to health care IS deregulate, Deregulate, DEREGULATE.

I am undecided who to vote for but it really CONCERNED me when McCain said thaT the fundamentals of the economy were strong and then flipflopped to say he meant that workers were strong.

It makes me mad when he starts every answer to a question with saying he was a POW. It reminds me of Rudy Giulianni who answered every question with 9/11. Then the republicans use the troops as props in their commercials and vote against expanding the G.I. Bill.

Where did you hear that Obama was paying people to make misleading statements. That concerns me to if it is true. You said you heard it. Did you want pikkel to confirm or deny that you heard it because that is what your question to pikkel is.

  32. Dave says:

Sorry I was apparently unclear…I am asking Pikkel if the rumor is true or not.

  33. Cole says:

my family talked about your question. We think that John McCain has said so many things that people know are wrong that obama does not need to pay people to say what they think. We heard that Obama was a muslim and found out that was a email that was not true at all. so not every thing you hear is right. You are very very clever to ask Pikkel that question thogh. How did you hear it? we can tell you are a good professor because you are smart.

  34. pikkel says:

My response to Dave is above. Apparently it took some time to clear the moderators. Thanks everyone.

  35. Grandma Pat says:

I agree with most of the above. I am sick and tired of hearing such a bias towards the Republican right in Kent county. We overrode them with our vote. Can we not now expect some decent reporting. Palin is an embarassment to our country. She lost. Let’s now stop promoting her. She frightens the majority of the American people. I also agree with some of the above and now listen to TV news on WZZM. They have less theatrics.
