Vostok chills out
Vostok, Antarctica reached a bone-chilling -119.4F back on August 26th. That came within about nine degrees of the all-time world record low temperature. On July 21, 1983, Vostok dipped to -128.6F. The Vostok station is a Russian (with joint U.S. and French cooperation) scientific research outpost located at 11,444 above sea level. You’d find about two dozen scientists there in the summer and about half that many in the winter. They’ve kept weather records there since 1957. The warmest ever recorded at the station was 10.4F above zero. In July 1987 the temperature all month never got warmer than -98F. Vostok has extremely low humidity, low levels of carbon dioxide (no plants), a lack of oxygen due to the high elevation and the proximity to the Pole, and a long, dark Polar night that lasts several months. Thats mighty cold, even I would not like that…way too cold, But IM enjoying this cool weather…GO LIons/Rams
I was reading on Accu Weather site about ythe artic ice..
Im currious how thry Know this was “Arctic has become an island for the first time in man’s history “…did we have satellite back in the 1800’s or even before?
comments below
“NASA satellite images taken last week now show that the Arctic has become an island for the first time in man’s history as both the north-west and north-east-passages have been opened due to melting ice, according to the Telegraph article.”
Strong words……..
“Prof Mark Serreze, a sea ice specialist at the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) in the US said the images suggested the Arctic may have entered a “death spiral” caused by global warming.”
Well you know some people who worry about global warming would like everyone to think that the Earth is warming so fast that in the next 10 years or so we will be planting palm trees here in Michigan, and up in the great north (Alaska and there abouts) they will be planting corn and such…If you want to buy that so be it…Arctic ice or no ice it still be be cold here in Michigan and as well as Alaska for the rests of our lives and beyond…A cool fall like day today where did summer go? SlimJim
BRRRRRR
Since CO2 freezes at -109F, is the ground covered with dry ice on those really cold days? Does it make that cool fog when it warms up again?
And I thought my “ex” was cold !
With darkness like that for many months, I think I would lose my equilibrium, get very depressed and then probably go crazy. Not for me! :s
all i can says is brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
