It’s About Time
Good grief, how did it take this long?
The Lions have finally rid themselves of Matt Millen. Great football player in his day. Great broadcaster, without peer when he was in the booth. Worst GM in the history of professional sports. Disagree? Please try to enlighten me.
Perhaps you’re impressed with his 31-84 record.
Perhaps you agree with his draft philosophy of taking skill players first and trying to patchwork the offensive and defensive line.
He ran coach after coach out of town. He changed schemes on both ends of the ball. He slammed his fist on the podium and declared, “I want to win” Then he went out and drafted another wide receiver who wouldn’t have time to run a pattern because his offensive line was filled with the likes of George Foster.
The second most important moment in Lions history just happened. Matt Millen is gone. The most important decision the Ford family will ever make is who will replace Millen. Hopefully, for the sake of long suffering Lions fans, they’ll get an experienced football executive. Someone from a winning organization who knows how to build a team through the draft. Someone who can look them in the eye during the job interview and tell them, “We’ll build a team from the line out, because you have to win the battle in the trenches first”‘
Can’t wait to hear you in the booth again Matt. You just may want to wait a few years before you come to Detroit to call a game.
A tiny step in the right direction, but with the same owners what will really change? They stunk before Millen and will likely continue to stink after Millen.
