October 6 - interesting day

October 6th, 2008 by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog

Frankfort, MI Last year on this date it was 87° in Grand Rapids and I was swimming in Lake Michigan!  We had 100% sunshine and an average wind speed of only 5.5 mph.  How’s that for a day in October.  We were in the midst of 4 consecutive days with highs in the mid-upper 80s.  Those four days averaged 23° warmer than average!  Record high temperatures and record highest minimum temperatures were set on the 6th (87°/68°), 7th (87°/66°) and the 8th (88°/67°).  On October 6, 2003 - we were 28° with a hard freeze…and on October 6, 2001 - we had snow flurries in West Michigan!  Check out the quarter moon tonight, with Jupiter just a little above and to the left of the moon.

I’m surprised that it isn’t warmer. After all, it is an election year and there’s an abundance of “hot air”.

We hit 90F at my house last year, boy how I miss those days….

Oct. 12, 2006 we had a small snowstorm, it was worse the further east you went. Followed by Lake Effect.

Here’s one of the pix I took of tonight’s sunset.

That’s gorgeous, Chuck! You sure do have the eye for your art form.

I was on the north side of that warm front a year ago up in the Keewanaw. It was wet and in the 50’s, while the rest of the UP was sweltering in the 80’s. I was glad I missed out on that late season heat wave! I’m finally ready for Fall to kick in and the siting of the first snow flakes!!!

Here is a map showing ‘normal’ snowfall for lower Michigan. It is easy to see the effects of the big lakes on the snow amounts. What has me alittle puzzled is the 20″ increase over in my neck of the woods of eastern Livingston and nw Oakland Counties. Is that because of the higher elevations in that particular area or what? Bill, what’s your take?

I remember this day as well. I was at Lake Michigan also - in Escanaba! It was warm - I basked in the sun on the beach with NO tourists but me! :) Black flies were still biting…
