Snowstorm!
A “Big Early Season Snowstorm” has hit part of the Canadian Rockies. Pictured is Sunshine Village near Banff, Alberta. They are less than a month from opening. Officials note that early snows often mean a long and snowy ski season. Sunshine boasts a 7-month ski season (well into May). Winter has also come to Alaska. Fairbanks has picked up at least snow flurries on 6 of the last 7 days. The first week of October was more than five degrees colder than average at Fairbanks. It’s also snowing down at Anchorage, where they had one of the coolest summers in history. Barrow already has 5″ of snow on the ground and Bettles reports a 4″ snowcover. Arctic Village woke up Wednesday morning with temperatures below zero. At the town of Alert in northern Canada, they reported a high temperature of +2F on Monday and a low temperature of -9F. If you REALLY like it cold, the Summit Station on top of the Greenland icecap reported a low temperature Sunday morning of -59F. Enjoy the sunshine and mild temperatures we’ll have Thursday through Sunday, because…well, I can’t give away the whole winter forecast yet…but I’m thinking this will not be a wimpy winter.
Snow. Bah! Humbug!
That’s a good place for the cold and snow to stay….59° and cloudy here..SlimJim
Wow – that’s just chilling!
Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy is goodie, goodie, goodie.
Will I be ice fishing by Christmas??????

Bill – when will your outlook for the winter 2008-09 season come out? I’m dying to find out what we are in store for!!!
Thanks!
Burr, not what I want to hear about the upcoming winter with the way things are going there are going to be a lot of people hurting this winter trying to pay their heating bills….its raining rather hard here now (has been for about a half hour now) it was real dark but it has lighten up a lot now…SlimJim
very heavy rain here now…Slimjim
Cant wait for snow.. Dang, I even bought a new shovel for the occasion. I gave the blower to my brother.
off topic but are there any salmon in the muskegon river yet ?
I’m not looking forward to winter. Or maybe I should say I WANT winter to arrive, the sooner it gets here the sooner it will be over. LOL
Thankfully hockey season is almost here, that’s one good thing about winter.
We received 1.12″ inches of rain from yesterday morning to this morning at 11:15. Bill, I’m hoping for ONE MORE warm/hot day to mow the lawn. Ok, I’ll settle for the high 60’s.
Rumrunner….you GAVE the blower away? Now you have to…SHOVEL?!
Oh yeah I am looking forward to shoveling *rolls eyes* LOL I guess it’s better than sitting indoors all day… It is a nice workout.
61F and rain here… leaves are really starting to change in my area.. hopefully they reach a good close to peak during this sunshine so I can get some good shots….
Going to be time to put the winter tires on soon!
Time for a little Public Service Announcement:
Why Electronic Drivers Aids and 4wd Systems Aren’t Enough (http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=122)
(Hint: They all rely on the available traction from your tires. “All Season” tires begin to lose maximum traction around 40-45*)
On a side note, rotating thunderstorms moving into ENTERPRISE, AL
Remember how they had a tornado go through there not long ago??
@Charles: I do recall that. Wasn’t it a pretty damaging one too? High school was hit, IIRC.
Yeah Rob that was the one. I was just watching TWC a few minutes ago and they mentioned it too, they didn’t say the year… Yeah, it’s never good when tornadoes hit schools, they are unprepared buildings.
Check out the shape of this cell over Alma… I am not seeing rotation on the velocity map though

The tornado in Prattville, Alabama last year went through the apartment complex that my daughter had lived in until the previous July. Wasn’t much left of the WalMart next to the complex. It tossed cars around in the parking lot like they were Hot Wheels toys.
Here is the link I was thinking of regarding tire safety below 45*:

I am so glad. I love winter its my FAVORITE season. I hope that the snow will fall very early and stay for a long time. Thanks Bill.

Shelli, you don;t mean me do you? Cause I end up chasing snow… LOL
Bring on the snow! Well perhaps, we could wait until Thanksgiving time but I say Winter, you are welcome to come along anytime!
Early indications are that this Winter will be a cold and very snowy one. Why does Bill keep throwing us a little teaser about the upcoming Winter? When does his Winter forecast come out?
SNOW! SNOW! SNOW!
Dan
If it is going to be cold there might as well be fresh snow on the ground at the same time.
My grandson who likes collecting bugs, he is saying a bad winter. He was telling me the other day, what he has been told to look for in bugs, to see what kind of winter we will have. My grandson is only 8 years old. I do think we will have a bad winter, cold and snow. I have alot of Sudoku and Fill-in puzzles to keep me busy this winter, here at home.
Here ya go, snowlovers! Movin’ closer….

Bill, when do you think the first snow will come? Will it be early, like on oct, or in november?
In my lifetime, if the mercury ever dipped to 59 below here in the midwest, one can forget about being outside longer than 10 minutes. All ER’s in the midwest would be filled with frostbite victims who didn’t have the proper winter gear on while shovling, walking to the bus stop, or clearing off their windshields.
