Freeze early Weds. AM

October 22nd, 2008 at 1:18 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog

It’s a hard freeze for much of West Michigan early Wednesday AM. I worked hard Tuesday PM getting the last of the plants indoors (and a few in the garage. We’ll have a nice day ahead. It still looks like our first flakes may fly next Monday/Tuesday with the first shovelable (is that a word?) sometime in the first 2 weeks of November. Leave a comment and let us know how cold you got this AM.

  2. 33F here at my place, 76F indoors, I am thinking about running my heater a bit more to bump it up to about 78F then I am going to hit the bed. Oh how I love living in a small room with a space heater!

  3. Bill shovelable snow should be a word.. hold on let me try

SHOVELABLE: Meaning: An accumulated amount of snow that would require use of a shovel to move and or remove.

Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike may use this term as seen below:

“We might get a shovelable amount of snow in November!” or “The last dump of snow we got was a shovelable amount”

SHOVELABLE also means: Able to be shoveled.

“That snow sure was shovelable” or “I would think that’s shovelable”

There Bill, it’s a word now cause I say it is LOL

  4. LightningWatcher says:

It is cold enough that I’m inspired to get some nicoteen lozenges and try and quit smoking again.

  5. Sue of Kalamazoo says:

Don’t talk about the white stuff, Bill. It is 30 degrees right now. Kind of cold and I’m not looking forward to crapping the windows in a little while.

  19. LOL Jim…

Sarah, I have to turn my head on too every morning, unfortunately I was annoyed awake this morning by DORA THE EXPLORER.. One of the cats must have stepped on my remote last night while I was asleep. I awoke at 8AM to this shrill whining and delayed speaking.. CAN …YOU…FIND…THE..OFF…BUTTON? I was like YEAH NOT SOON ENOUGH LOL I quickly flipped it to The Weather Channel and went back to sleep LOL

I did peek out the window this morning and it was a horrific white scene.. frost everywhere.

John I am with you, just clear the driveway and the plow comes through and blocks you in.. Lucky for us we get ours plowed. Oh and the fact I have 4×4. If I didn’t have that I’d be screwed LOL

  20. Sarah (in Martin) says:

    Charles-

I have two 2.5 year olds and an 8 month old. We have come across Dora in passing. And kept right on going. Thankfully, they love Sesame Street, I like it, we watch together and then it is off. Until naptime. LOL

  21. Now I watched Sesame Street when I was growing up, never saw a problem with that show (although Elmo can get annoying too LOL)

Yeah, and I still think Barney has a criminal background.. I am not alone in that accusation either.. He’s just so…ahh I won’t say LOL

  22. Sarah (in Martin) says:

    LOL.

Elmo speaks in the 3rd person. That is why I dont like him. Sarah does not like 3rd person speech. LOL.

    Back to weather -

I love my southern facing windows. My kitchen is almost perfect Charles temperature. 900 degrees. LOL

  23. Steelie says:

    Good Day,

Huh… we live on the top of a hill not far from GRR airport. Tomatoes survied the night… benefits of high ground I suppose.

And hey, doesn’t it seem a little early for a blizzard in the lower 48? Well that is what they have to our South West mostly in the North West corner of Kansas… It won’t be long. Oh yeah, so much for global warming huh with a blizzard in October.

    Steelie

  24. It was 27 degrees at 8 AM in the City of DeWitt, County of Clinton, State of Michigan this morning.

  25. Lisa says:

Whoo, SNOW! I am soooo excited!

  26. John says:

Sure am glad I don’t have to get out and drive to work in it anymore. The downside is that my wife might make ke take her to work.

  27. Jennifer K (NE GR at the Rockford/GR border) says:

I was really hoping we could wait till December for snow. The stuff sucks! I won’t be working from home this winter like I thought so now I am stuck just complaing about the nasty white stuff! UGH!

  28. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Looks like Nebraska is going to get hammered! Not much at this time, 1mile vis is the best I could find….so far

  29. Sarah, like that one episode of Seinfeld? Jimmy doesn’t like that! LOL!

It’s true though, it can be like 85F in the summer in our kitchen yet when I bake I lean into the heat blast, oh the simple pleasures!

That Blizzard Warning in Kansas just makes me want to pack up and head to FL this year LOL

I will at least take advantage of the joy of tracking big storms! Just have to crochet myself a cocoon and hatch next spring LOL

  30. Dale P (Paw Paw) says:

    Charles????

Crochet? Baking in the oven? Head to florida in the winter?

Are you really 20 ish or are did your grandma hack into your computer??

    WHERE ARE YOU CHARLES RUSSELL?

  31. Dale LMAO

I bake hot wings, Crochet, well, my Mother taught me that. My Uncle is great at crocheting, he makes some nice blankets! Moving to Florida for good not just the winter! LOL I love the heat, the hotter the better unless it involves heat over 100F.

Oh and I have good news, after an overwhelming response, wunderground has set a timespan for my wrong banning. I will be back tomorrow morning! This means my blog WILL be up this winter! I swear probably 50 some odd people mailed admin about it, at least that many mailed me…

  32. Marti B. (Grandville, MI) says:

Can hardly wait until next April and spring…………

  33. Ed Woodard says:

We had 23.7° last night with a wind chill of 20.7° according to our weather station here in Oakfield Township.

  34. MaryCB (Wyoming) says:

Heard the word snow on the news and had to jump on and see what everyone was talking about! It seems too early. Weather’s been so nice and warm and sunny that there isn’t any transition. Still feels like Sept to me. Except that I didn’t go out at all today, which probably felt more like winter! LOL!

  35. Larry from Hastings/Barry Co. says:

I have to travel next month. We are getting a different car. I hope the bad snows stay away, until I get done with everything. I agree with Bill.

  36. Dale P (Paw Paw) says:

    .SYNOPSIS…(330 AM EDT THU OCT 23 2008)
OUR FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON IS ANTICIPATED FROM
EARLY MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT! AS FOR TODAY… HIGH PRESSURE
WILL REMAIN IN CONTROL OF OUR WEATHER AND RESULT IN LOTS OF SUN WITH
HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE MIDDLE 50S. A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL
BEGIN TO APPROACH FROM THE SOUTHWEST AND RESULT IN INCREASING CLOUD
COVER TONIGHT AND FRIDAY. SHOWERS WILL DEVELOP FRIDAY AND CONTINUE
THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY. MIXED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS ARE
POSSIBLE LATE SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY (PERHAPS CHANGING TO ALL SNOW)
AS MUCH COLDER AIR ADVECTS IN. IN FACT HIGH TEMPERATURES BY MONDAY
AND TUESDAY SHOULD STRUGGLE TO REACH THE LOWER 40S.

  37. Dale P (Paw Paw) says:

charles that is awesome about your blog! Wouldn’t be the same winter without your info! Especially this one as I am betting on a doozy! I think that Old Man Winter is going to make a very feisty appearance and hang around for a long time this year! Might be one to remember!

  38. Larry, get a Volt! Save the environment and money!! I want a Volt too one day..

Dale, measurable could mean a Trace! or 0.01″ LOL

I am so glad my blog is back, and I have some cool plans for this winter too! It’s so nice to see these big powerful Lows starting to plow across the country again. It was so boring there for a while!

This winter will be fun, I have a bunch of fun plans, if we get the weather we think we will hehehehehehehehe

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY! I too am inside LOL

  39. Larry from Hastings/Barry Co. says:

Charles, when do you think our first BIG snow storm will be? From what I have been reading, I am saying end of Nov. or Dec. Volt’s are cool.
