The sun broke through after a rare early season snowfall to our east. Snow totals included 20″ at Slide Mt. and Shandaken, NY. Freeland, PA picked up over 15″ and Suffolk NJ had 14″ of fresh snow. It was only the 5th October snowfall in 114 years at New Brunswick, NJ. Also, it’s snowed in London, England for the first time in October since 1922 – just as Parliament was debating a sweeping anti-global warming bill. It was unusually cold, with lows of 25F at Birmingham and 20F at Topcliffe. Lows reached the upper 20s in Ireland (which would be a very cold night in January much less October) with snow flurries at both Dublin and Birr, Ireland. Oslo, Norway was in the low 20s with a fresh snow cover and temperatures dipped below freezing in Paris and across the Netherlands. If you really like it cold, I see that Summit Station, Greenland had a high of -53 and a low of -62 on Oct. 19! I see that Joe Bastardi, the famous long-range forecasting meteorologist at Accu-Weather entitled his evening column last night: “GLOBAL WARMING… THE ARROGANT LEADING THE IGNORANT”. We have some beautiful weather ahead for the next five days with perfect conditions for trick-or-treat time Friday evening. We’ll be +60 on Monday and Tuesday, then it looks like rain next Wednesday. I’m still looking at some pretty cold (and occasionally snowy) weather for late November and December.
So what will this Winter be like for us in GR Bill? I can’t wait to read your winter outlook for our area!
Is there a still a snowstorm possibility for the first couple of weeks in November?
C’mon Winter!
Dan
Tracking snow for deer season and a white Christmas. Ice fishing will continue through early March. How’s that, Dan?
I got down to 27° the coldest so far this fall/winter…looking forward to the warm up next week….we could be in for a long cold winter…anyone notice that the leaves have hung on the trees later then average this fall? and also we still have dandelions in bloom! We did have dandelions in bloom up to December a few years ago. but its a old tale of a cold winter (tears in my eyes)
SlimJim
Jim,
Funny you mention the leaves, I was just pondering that thought yesterday…usually, before Halloween, we have lost 85% or more of the leaves!
I am not a lover of snow but that is a very pretty picture.. the trees are beautiful
When the leaves stay on the trees longer than usual, it is usually a sign that the trees are making and storing nourishment for a long winter.
Thanks to Joe Bastardi for reducing the global warming debate to name calling. Real helpful! Bill — I am surprised you would parrot those remarks, you are way above that in my estimation.
I really want some snow…but it looks like next week we’re getting weather in the 60s every day!
Go Joe Bastardi! I agree. Global warming is a bunch of nonsense as far as i am concerned. Drive a prius save the planet. ugh. I agree with gas saving cars sure..anything to help out with high gas prices. idk..thats one thing i think is pretty dumb. I think that statement is perfect.
My opinion on global warming (climate change) is better to be safe than sorry.
Steve Goulet, have you learned nothing in the last year? The PDO has gone negative. The AMO and AO are soon to follow. The solar wind is at a 50 year low and sunspot activity has been absent for months. Record cold temps are being reported in both hemispheres as we speak, not to mention those great early snowfalls. Nature is putting an emphatic finish to this “debate”.
I’ll be darned, check this out…

I’m willing to bet Bill has the same opinion of anthropogenic global warming as his old friend Craig, uh, (dang, what was that guy’s name again?)
Why didn’t anyone address the problem of global warming when it first started? Oh wait, that was 10,000 years ago and nobody was here.
Amazing what these chilly days inmlate Oct did to the average, we are now below average by a degree or so in Lansing area…
AO shows a nice dip about mid month

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a BEAUTIFUL pic you have posted there Bill.
Bob, I see you’re lonely here, I would call you but…Long distance is shut off, and just recently my cell phone… (the cell phone isn’t my fault, I was added into a family plan and one of the members didn’t pay their bill… tsk tsk LOL)
I’m off to dreamland, good night everyone!!
Do we really have to snipe here about global warming? I’m new to this site and certainly not a meteorologist but haven’t we had our warmest years yet over the last few? As soon as there is cold weather somewhere, people get out and mock the idea of the earth getting warmer. There can certainly be a debate over whether or not it’s caused by man but let’s not make fun of people who choose to drive hybrids. I’d rather not be in the back pocket of oil producing countries and what’s wrong with trying to save energy?
Name calling and anecdotal evidence won’t change the fact that this year has averaged well above the 20 year mean globally (including October), according to the UAH: http://discover.itsc.uah.edu/amsutemps/
Mike — how does decreased sun spot activity and solar wind refute AGW? What is your point?
BEWARE of those young TRICK or TREATERS tonite with a nice day/nite like tonite you know they’ll be out & not watching for you!!!
HAPPY & SAFE HALLOWEEN!!!
Hey Steve, our warmest year was 1998 (worldwide). Since then it’s been getting cooler. NONE of the special worldwide climate models that Algore and others use to scare everyone about what is going to happen forecast that. If the models are wrong about that, what else are they wrong about?
Charles, I saw your winter outlook on another topic. All I can say is I sure hope you’re right! It sounds good to me.
GFS tries to bring some snow showers in here by next weekend. AO is forecast to go negative, and it looks like it may stay that way for a while. I think we’re headed toward a wild start to winter.
Who is “Algore?”
