Skiing in the Alps

October 31st, 2008 at 12:39 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog

<–skycam from Zermatt, Switzerland (will go black at night).  Click here for more live cams from the Alps.  At the Zermatt Ski Area, they report 7 lifts are open with up to 80″ of base.  Zurich reports the heaviest early snowfall since records began in 1931.  Up to 12.6″ was reported.  The heavy snow downed trees and power lines that blocked rail lines and snarled traffic.  Power outages were also reported in England from cold and snow.  Thousands were left without power in central England.  BTW, here we plow and sand the roads.  In England they “grit” the roads and lorry (truck) drivers are called “gritters”.

Accuweather has a big system forecasted around the 14th of Nov. I’m curious to see if that will hold, seems like that far ahead it’s hard to know. Anyone got forecast models for that timeframe that show that system?

Here we just have to “grit” our teeth and watch out for the SUV drivers that think they are invincible.

So what will a big tank in the Arctic Oscillation do to our weather?
I’ll take my answer off the air.

  8. Oh I forgot to update the news..

Tonight when we were taking my Sis trick or treating we pulled into the driveway and I looked to the sky and saw a BRIGHT blue & white flash and a streak across the sky, I was thinking iridium flare, or some kind of meteor it was AWESOME! It was in the western sky, looked kind of like this, and it stayed in the sky for a few secs…
