Review: Role Models is funny, dirty, charming

“Role Models” is funny, dirty, and charming all at the same time… this was a fun “R” rated comedy… imagine an older Steve Stifler (”American Pie”) and an unmarried Pete (“Knocked Up”) then mix in two great young actors and a bunch of low-brow but funny jokes and gags with a nice, albeit predictable storyline… and you get your money’s worth (at least for a matinee)…
AGAIN, I HATE TO HAVE TO SAY THIS, BUT THIS MOVIE HAS AN “R” RATING… while this was not as potentially offensive as “Zack and Miri”, it should be noted that I continue to see young kids (under 10) at these movies…. don’t say I haven’t tried to warn you….
(2008) (rated: R for crude and sexual content, strong language and nudity) (1 hr, 39 min)
Starring: Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch
Genre: Comedy/Raunchy-Comedy
The Plot: Wild behavior forces a pair of energy drink reps to enroll in a Big Brother program.
MY TAKE:
Okay, its nice to get back to the funny and less offensive “R” rated comedies… I heard in an interview with Seann William Scott that in many places in the movie, the audience is laughing so much you miss the next joke… and now I totally get it… because some of the jokes are back-to-back and you might miss something if the audience laughs too much. “Role Models” had us laughing all the way through, in the same shotgun approach to jokes as “Step Brothers”, this movie just keeps shooting out the jokes rapid-fire and whatever doesn’t make you laugh or isn’t funny, they move on to the next joke.
This is the best LAFF that I’ve had this year at the movies all the way through since “Step Brothers” earlier this summer… and while this movie isn’t going to get any Academy Award Nominations…. it certainly is a very funny movie - IF YOU CAN TOLERATE THE “R” RATED, RAUNCHY HUMOR - you’ll be laughing too… or holding your hand over your mouth in shock !!!
Some of the biggest laughs come from the youngest member of the main cast - 12 year old Bobb’e J. Thompson (playing a slightly younger character) - if you’ve seen the trailer, then you know what I’m talking about already, if not - just be ready to laugh at this kid. Another young actor hanging with Scott and Rudd is 19 year old Christopher Mintz-Plasse (you may remember as McLovin’ from “Superbad”), also playing someone a little bit younger… both do quite well to stay ahead of their older counterparts. Speaking of older - 48 year old Jane Lynch (“40 Year Old Virgin”) - is in a constant state of one-liners from … well, I probably can’t really repeat the lines here, but … let’s just say she’s stealing most of the scenes she’s in.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
A good story, great character development, relationships between characters, the comedy is non-stop - from low-brow to slapstick goofiness… I give it 7.5 out of 10… I don’t make a lot of guarantees on comedies because everyone has a different sense of humor - but the majority of people in our packed theater were laughing throughout the movie… I hope you’ll also get a couple good chuckles out of this one.
So what did you think? Please post a comment!
