Tornadoes leave 2 dead
A tornadic thunderstorm raced through North Carolina, leaving two dead and at least 6 injured. There were at least 7 places where tornadoes touched down along the path of the storm, with one EF2 tornado and one EF3 tornado (winds of 140 mph!). Other severe t-storms produced scattered wind damage from the Carolinas to Connecticut. We have now had 125 tornado fatalities in the U.S. in 2008. We’ll be close to 1600 confirmed tornadoes for the year…possibly a new record.
Did West Michigan have a above normal year for tornadoes, the answer is yes.
Preliminary Data for the 23 counties, show we had 9 tornadoes, the average
is 5.3 or 5 tornadoes per year, for the NWS Grand Rapids CWA, based on 59
years of data, going back to 1950. Michigan averages 17 tornadoes per year,
based on 1953-2005 data.
We had 5 tornado days, which is above average, tornado days average 3.32 or 3 tornado days for the 23 counties in the NWS Grand Rapids County Warning Area.
