Lake Effect Snow
<–click the ruler and Indiana radar to enlarge. The lake effect snow squalls have moved out inot the lake, except for far SW Berrien and occasionally far western Oceana and Mason Counties. Watch the visible satellite loop (daytime). What moves on the loop is clouds and what is stationary is snow on the ground. You can see the lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan went down all through Ohio. It got COLD last night…9 in Big Rapids, 6 in Baldwin and Wellston, 16 in Kalamazoo! It’s cold in many areas east of the Rockies…upper 40s this AM in Ft. Myers and Ft. Lauderdale, FL - 38 in Victoria, TX. That’s 10″ of snow on the ground near Hamilton. Here’s more West Michigan Snow Totals. Click here for some snowfall totals - up to 10″ already near Hamilton, and 9″ in Saugatuck! Over 8″ has fallen at Gaylord and Mancelona. 9″ on the ground in Kalkaska, 5″ in Muskegon. Trenery has picked up 20″ in the U.P, with 19″+ at Eben Jct. The Marquette NWS has 14″ of snow on the ground and Ironwood has a 7″ snow cover. Up to 30″ of new snow in New York State. Holiday Valley at Elllicottville, NY reports 28″ of snow in one day! Very cold air first crosses Lake Superior and then comes down the length of Lake Michigan. Inland areas have cleared with temps. in many places reaching the teens. It looks like a pretty cold week. Other snowfall reports: 10″ Boyne Falls and Moorestown in Missaukee Co, and 7″ at Interlochen. Oh, and the Lions are 0-10. And here’s some cool fog video from West Virginia.

What’s the meaning of this? Are we supposed to go slow or what? I don’t have time to go slow!!
November 16th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Ok. I am directionally challenged-LOL. So I am in Spring Lake going to GR-does this mean not much on the drive home? Exactly where is south of Grand Haven?
November 16th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
My dad’s up in Freesoil, MI (NW Mason Co.) and he said there’s at least 5″ on the ground there. Snowing with a lt. dusting on the ground here in Holland. No deer in the freezer…(YET)
November 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
When I woke up to hunt this morning, had a dusting of snow on the ground in Branch. I left the woods at 9 am with a heck of a snowstorm and I would say they had 5 inches just since I was out hunting (Big Star Lake Area). Back home now, no deer in the freezer (yet) and didn’t see anything to shoot, saw a ton of hunters though.

Do you think schools will close tommorow??
November 16th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
My guess is schools won’t close tomorrow… actually, i’m 99.9% positive we’ll have school tomorrow. It’s kinda sad, because i’m a student that WANTS a snowday, but i’m nearly positive we’ll have school.
November 16th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

November 17th, 2008 at 5:12 am
Woke up to 2 inches on the ground in Saugatuck.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:51 am
No deer in the freezer but my daughter had to chase 3 out of the road last night here in Norton Shores.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Nothing but cold green and brown here this morning. Kind of a let down.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:53 am
2″ on the ground in holland. My point forecast gives me about 3-4″ more by tomorow
November 17th, 2008 at 6:54 am
Just cold outside. We didn’t get any new snow and all the snow that fell yesterday morning is now gone.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:02 am
30° here with no snow on the ground (good) not much wind either so just a typical cold November day. To me the rest of November dose not look that far out of average (normal). On the cold side but nothing really unusual.
SlimJim
November 17th, 2008 at 7:44 am
hey 2 in on ground in Paw Paw this morning and I am betting on 4 more today!
November 17th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Up to 4″ now in Saugatuck. Snow has tapered off a bit for now.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:07 am
2″ on the ground here in Portage this morning. Temp is 32…..so some of it is starting to melt with the ground being warm
November 17th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Just heard there was an accident on Ravine Rd in Kzoo. Family came up on it…just missed being part of it. Many cars involved…A little FYI… Awww winter driving…people see the white stuff & think they can still drive fast!!!
November 17th, 2008 at 9:25 am
Eaton Rapids measured 4 inches… I am still in shock! South Lansing rec’d barely nothing and here at work at the edge of Okemos rec’d approx 1 inch. Yee Haw!! If this is a sign of winter in ER… I am soooooooo excited!
November 17th, 2008 at 9:29 am

November 17th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Snowed probably a total of 2 inches over here in Dexter! I love it!
November 17th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Sun was out for about 10 minutes, now it is snowing hard…..still 32 degrees
November 17th, 2008 at 10:25 am
In the swamps south of Paradise there was 6″ on the ground by 5 pm…left in a snow squalls…I’d bet they got another 1-3″…bad roads all the way down to grayling, couple of ditch parties… the again north of Rockford….some black ice just south of the bridge and the rest was slush and snow covered…another year of training the “flat landers” how to drive in winter weather.
November 17th, 2008 at 11:47 am
just a beautiful sunny day here in Downtown Grand Rapids… intermittent lake effect clouds (ooooh…) how many days in a row have we been forecast 1-2 inches… up to an inch… We’ve barely seen a dusting here the last 3 days. Is there a disturbance moving through tonight (like the one that was supposed to move through last night… but was actually yesterday afternoon, that actually didn’t do anything)? Is that supposed to bring snows further inland… just curious. It’s not the fact that it’s not snowing that annoys me… it’s the promise of it repeatedly with nothing coming to fruition that does the trick… i stare and stare at the radar thinking “OOh, it’s sooo close…Oh look! It looks like a trend might be beginning moving the bands further inland… nope… just my eyes getting loopy after having stared at the computer screen for too long…not a good way to start off the season!
November 17th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
It’s been snowing steadily (& getting harder) here in Whitehall (I am 1/8 a mile from Lake Michigan) and I’ve got about 3+” on the rails of my deck.
November 17th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Hey Joe,
Thats why they put a percentage after each forecast, As in GR 80% of the forecast area has a “chance” to see 1″ to 2″,
while here in St.Johns we a have a chance of snow showers, but only 50% of the forecast area has a chance of seeing snow showers, we finally have a snow shower moving thru now..
November 17th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
We have 6″ in my front yard at noon today. I have pictures but not sure how to post them on here.
November 17th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I live about 1/4 mile off of the lake shore on the south end of Holland and we have 6″ now on the ground…and it is still snowing.
November 17th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Man, this new blog format is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! Party sunny over this way. There looks to be some serious snow bands coming off the big lake over that way! No deer hanging in this camp as of yet…
November 17th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Up to 8″ in Saugatuck. It has been snowing about an inch per hour since 11am. Very easy to measure with no wind. Roads are very bad from Holland south.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Been snowing hard here for about the last 15 minutes…..we have been right on the edge of all the snow all day. Looks like a big snow globe out!!
November 17th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
snow is coming down at a pretty good clip right now
November 17th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
snowed hard here for about 10mins..really letting up now
November 17th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
okay my county just got upgraded to the warning
November 17th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

November 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Its been snowing all day in holland. I`d say we have 6-8″
November 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
5+ inches fallen so far in Allegan. Guess the lake kicked in better than GRR thought. I’m hoping to see a foot here before all is said and done.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Its cold!! Went out and played with the dogs in the snow. Been snowing at a pretty good clip here for the last hour or so. Still sitting at 32 degrees.

Ok…..now the links mess up my post and it’s awaiting moderation? I’m beginning to hate this format now seriously…and it was slow to load today….The old one you could just post and it’d be fine. This has way too many problems!
November 17th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Just measured the snow on my deck in the back yard, Allegan’s up to 8″ already. Roads are starting to get some accumulation around here too. Just seen a county truck go by on M-40 laying salt as I’m typing this.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Im with you Charles……not liking this format………SLOW!!
November 17th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
it stinks!!!!
November 17th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
…..and my comment is still awaiting moderation, TOO LATE TO LOOK AT THE WEBCAM NOW… it looked so cool with those bands coming in off the lake.
Meanwhile, I have a nice band to my NW, hopefully it makes it here so I can get some pix of it =)
November 17th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
When I got home at 4:30 I had 6 1/2 inches on the birdfeeder. I’m sure we’ve gotten more since then!
November 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
On and off snow here in Muskegon County.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
7.5″ near the lake in holland.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Jenison is going to have a snow day tomorrow.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I hate you guys!!!! Just kidding…
I’m sure the rest of the inlanders know how I feel - right Bob P?
November 17th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
You don’t even have to be very far inland Craig. I’ve got NOTHING here.
I was working down in the Hastings/Gun Lake area today and there were a couple of inches still in the shady areas down there.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
9″ on my deck as of 6 pm
November 17th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Excellent. Now it’s even snowing in Lansing, and still not at my house.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
no snow here either….frig….
November 17th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
It’s been off and on since the big burst early this afternoon. I think the heavier bands are just west of me in Hamilton, which now has 10″
November 17th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Snowing at a good clip with a inch sticking on the ground in Newaygo/Oceana co..
November 17th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Nothing here either.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
9″ on my deck in Allegan. Don’t recommend trying to brave some of the roads around here. 3 miles of A-37 north of Burnips, south to Allegan is very slick. Seen tracks from two slide offs and almost slid off once myself.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Brandi i hate to burst ur bubble but jenison wont have a snowday tomorrow i also live in jenison but i graduated this past june…were not gonna get any snow tonight
November 17th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Looks like the last hurrah for Ottawa/Allegan/Van Buren as the band is shifting south and heading for Benton Harbor and Indiana. Considering they were calling for only a couple of inches and we ended up with 9-10″, I am pretty happy. Typically, we end up with much less than expected.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Yeah, there’s maybe 1-1.5″ here. We will have school tomorrow.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
expect school tomorrow kids!! hahhah
November 17th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Just had a light dusting that covers the cars…its a cold 26° here.
SlimJim
November 17th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Just drove from Hudsonville to Holland, and the roads are absolutely horrible. There’s snow on the roads coming into Zeeland, and anywhere where it might be bare, it’s ice. Take it slow, people, and watch out on overpasses/bridges.
November 18th, 2008 at 12:24 am
26F at my place, just a dusting, we will lose that by tomorrow morning.

Thank You, again
So did Gaylord get 4″…or 8″ ?

0753 PM SNOW ALLEGAN 42.53N 85.85W 11/17/2008 E4.0 INCH ALLEGAN MI COUNTY OFFICIAL MIDNIGHT THROUGH 730 PM TOTAL
They drive to Martin for that measurement or what? I know before I went to bed Monday morning there was little accumulation on my deck. And by 8pm there was 9″ of snow on it. I’m right on the western city limits of Allegan city too. Wonder if thats not the measurement of the snow left on some of the county roadways no thanks to our economy.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:03 am
Clear and cold here had the coldest night of the winter so far with a low of 18° stay warm.
SlimJim
November 18th, 2008 at 7:48 am
WOW……16.7 degrees on my thomometer! Thats a cold shocker for November! Brrr!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Ok guys..you can keep that snow over by the lake shore ok? lol I was happy we havent gotten much. there is a dusting here. thats it. I hate driving in that stuff!! Not looking forward to winter..hopefully spring will come fast!!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:48 am
“Awww winter driving…people see the white stuff & think they can still drive fast!!!”
Funny how people here slow down for rain, then speed up for snow. The prevailing thought seems to be “it’s not how fast I can go and still stop in 2 to 3 seconds, but how fast I can go and (mostly) stay on the road”.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Dear woodtv…PLEASE change the page back to the original layout. This one is a ton less attractive, and very hard to navigate through. Thanks…
Just thought i’d get my 2 cents in! Lol.
Bob, your in Fairbanks? I have a friend up there right now and last I talked to her, she said it was a winter wonderland. Hmm, must have melted since I talked to her!
November 18th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Chilly morn here, 18*…snow covered the ground…under 1/2″ though!
Made for slippery walking and commute
Wish I was there, in the UP

Could we have more headlines tomorrow…the NWS supposidly says the LES snow is going to ramp up tomorrow?

we just need that low to take a track over Toledo and we have a snowstorm
November 18th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Is that my snowstorm at the moment then? =)
When is that for?
November 18th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
When is this snow storm going to happen? How much snow could we see out of it if it moves more towards us?
November 18th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
the GFS has shown a big storm 7 to 10 days out since Nov 5th, for mid Nov,(by 4 days away it simply disappears as this one will) ..
and for late Nov,(at one point for Thanksgiving, it will be too warm) probably wont happen and for 1st week of Dec, might happen….
we will see……
The models are nuts this year…as usuall!
November 18th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Nothing here, just cold.
I learned there were 20s in northern FL this morning..This global warming is getting out of hand.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Well I’ll be darned.. LAKE MICHIGAN was warmer than Florida this morning: http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/images/conus/dynamic/MinT_2008112012_conus.png
November 18th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Well areas of it anyways LOL
November 18th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I hope that storm Tyler mentioned becomes a reality; I live too far inland to enjoy all the lake-affect snow others have been getting. so all I have is for synoptic storms to depend on…
November 18th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
What is up with the lousy forecast discussions this fall? They have been very short, and not very informative. This afternoon, they mention the possibility of a significant lake snow event starting Thu., but fail to mention any specifics. Usually, they discuss things going for and against the storm. The long term discussions have been a few sentences. Shoot, I could forecast that.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Who ever is “93″ that writes the forecast discussions is usually pretty informative… “Meade” hasn’t been as informative.. but seems to be pretty pesismistic about anything that would be awesome “weather wise” haha the NWS personalities
November 18th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Well its looks like it going to get cold again this weekend so it will snow some where…(I hope its not here) it was a cold but nice day today…if we had more days like this..sun and no snow, then winter would not be too bad if this was as cold as it ever got. By the way I had a low of 17.2° here for the coldest low of the winter so far.
SlimJim
November 18th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
I SEE A 40F IN THE FORECAST! So that will be my day I look forward to from this point on LOL
Some light returns coming in off the lake
November 18th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

November 19th, 2008 at 5:13 am
A pic I took this morning as the snow passed: http://icons-pe.wunderground.com/data/wximagenew/c/charlesimages/2324.jpg
Hey Maggie! Watch for icy spots. Not sure what the conditions are, but always use caution in the winter, someone could have spilled water too and that could freeze. You can’t be too careful.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:15 am
Lake Effect Snow Watch up for the typical southwestern counties. Looks like Wednesday night through Friday. Now that they’ve posted a watch, we’ll be lucky to see six inches of snow.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:02 am
sounds like it’s icy out there. Great
November 19th, 2008 at 7:13 am
You’re lucky Charles, just a trace here.
