CPC revises winter forecast

December 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

/products/predictions/30day/off15_temp.gif The Climate Prediction Center has revised their December temperature forecast.  Now that they can see what’s coming in the first 10 days of the month, they’ve decided they better get on board with the eastern U.S. cold.  Of course, readers of this blog know that I’ve been talking about a cold December for quite a few weeks now.  I know this is only one forecast…but there has been talk about whether we need the taxpayers to be funding what can be done cheaper and better by the private sector.  I would suggest that they might considering getting the advice and counsel of local NWS forecaster, Bill Marino, who is a very thorough forecaster and part of one of the best NWS offices in the country (GRR).

Was wondering when they might catch up to ya Bill!!!!

    So far…On track…

Thanks for the HArd work Bill! and your team!

  2. John (Muskegon) says:

It’s good to see what can be accomplished by dedicated people instead of the politically-influenced clowns that kicked John Coleman to the curb.

  3. Jason says:

    Very nice Bill.

  4. SteveW says:

I see that the GFS is now trending much colder for the middle of the month after several runs of warmer temps. Maybe a large snowstorm by the 15th?

  5. Jason says:

how much snow are we looking at wed-sat here in west michigan?

  6. Bill Olson says:

I am seeing frigid cold in the Fairbanks area, even for them. This morning -31. (That is 17 degrees below normal) The high today -20. (Barrow is only -11F)

At some point it will let loose for here. I say just before Christmas we may see some effects of it.

Imagine how cold it would be there without global warming!!!

  7. Bill Olson says:

I should say it is -11F at this moment in Barrow.

Hey, does anyone know how to ‘log in’ with the new system???

ie My name is in Blue so I can receive email replies.

    Thanks

  8. Great job Bill! We never doubted you!

Bill Olson, you have to just type it in now with the new website, there is no logging in anymore. So if you put a link in the website field then your name will be blue.

  9. Bill, I’m glad you gave a thumbs up to Bill Marino and all the forecasters from the NWS in Grand Rapids. They are as good as it gets and they by far have the best forecast disscussions around. When I forecast for our local farmers I try to look at everything I can get my hands on then use a blended weight on who or what I trust as having a better track record be it a given forecaster, office or computer models and my own gut feelings, then pray I don’t eat to much crow!.

  10. SteveW…im the one who posted that link of the 15th..and whats ur last name

  11. Byron says:

Anyone know if the lake effect event for wednesday-friday is going to be significant or not? Will the winds be W or WSW so they will make it inland to GR? Love all your input!!

  12. Pauline (Wilson and Leonard) says:

I just read the forecast and it said the winds should be mainly from the west and west-northwest. I think (hope!) that means it should make it inland.

  13. Byron the winds will b WNW

  14. SteveW says:

Watchman Tyler.. I can’t seem to find your posted link for the 15th, was it in a prior comment/blog?

  15. OwenC says:

I’m fine with more snow, so long as the roads will be good enough to drive to Ohio on the 24th.

Many conservatives have drooled at the prospect of eliminating the NWS, especially some in Pennsylvania! (Just look at the Accuweather political contributions). Sounds attractive initially, but despite the cost and inefficiencies of the Federal Government, I would not trust the private sector. They can be much more efficient, but they have to pay the bills. Although we pay for it in taxes, the NWS is free. Last I checked, if I want to see Joe Bastardi’s forcast discussions I need to pay a premium.

Keep up the good work, Bill!!!

  17. Michele Swingle says:

    Hi Bill,

Just a quick question. What does the long/short range look like for December?
Specifically, 21-29? We will be traveling back to the Greatest State in the US from West Virginia??

  18. Jason says:

I guess all this “global warming” was fogging up their forecast!
