More Snow and Cold
<–That snowman looks waaaaay too happy! 8:45 PM update: The cold front is just past Grand Rapids…temperatures are in the mid 30s here yet – it reached 40 at noon at Muskegon and 38 in GRR. A light mix of precipitation has overspread the area this evening. Roads will be wet to start, with icy spots later tonight as temps. reach freezing. It’s 20 in Green Bay, 11 in Eau Claire, WI and +2 at International Falls, MN…so the cold air is coming. It’ll get the lake-effect cranked up later tomorrow. The NWS has a Winter Storm WARNING for 7 counties in northern lower Michigan for UP TO TWO FEET of snow by Friday AM!! The warning includes: Traverse City, Gaylord, Grayling, Kalkaska, Mancelona, Charlevoix and Petoskey. We have a Winter Weather Advisory for Oceana, Newaygo and Mecosta Counties northward for 3-6″ of snow. The rest of us should see perhaps 2-4″. This is a mid-January weather pattern! We have more snow on the way and even colder air. Check out the latest state weather observations, local radar, and the local surface weather map. Here’s the NAM snowfall forecast thru 84-hours, and the GFS model snowfall forecast through 120 hours. HPC is giving areas NW of GRR the heaviest snow. Northern Michigan received up to 15.5″ from the Sunday-Monday storm. Check out the warnings/advisories in the U.S. It was a windy night last night, especially near Lake Michigan (gust to 44 mph on the beach at Muskegon, 48 mph at the Holland Channel and 50 mph at the Grand Haven Channel!). The GFS has been gradually coming around to my idea of some heavy-duty cold air with temps. struggling to get past the low 20s and wind chills in the single figures. It’ll be plenty cold enough for lake-effect snow thru Friday. Then a clipper system gives us snow on Saturday with another very cold shot to follow for Sunday/Monday with more lake-effect. We’re talking at least a few inches in inland areas to a foot of snow or more for the most favorable lake-effect areas. Wonder if we’ll have a top-ten cold/snowfall December?…could be. Note: I’m off for the next two weeks, Terri’s doing my shift…but I’ll be in town and will be updating the blog on occasion. Oh, and the Astronomy Picture of the Day is pretty cool.
Snow occurring on Dec 3 | Dec 4 | Dec 5 | Dec 6. Total amount 7.9 Inches.
this is for grr according to accuweather.
Bill explain why we don’t see more daylight the days right after the First Day of Winter. What date do our days become longer?
Dale in Paw Paw, I read a while back about the cereal.. LOL.. I eat cereal whenever I feel like it. I could be up all day from 8AM and eat it at 8PM. I don’t have breakfast, lunch or dinner, I just eat when I get hungry =)
Not sure, but my thoughts of 2-4″ MIGHT be a tad overdone. But I will leave my map as is. That excludes LES by the way.
Sounds like The NWS has the next few days confused…Almost each disussion is different! I think there will be a Winter Storm Watch go into effect for the first to two rows of counties sometime tomorrow! the reason I think a WSW instead of a LES watch is because there will be a combination of wind, snow, cold, and clipper systems to come in, so most likely a WSW, rather than a LES Watch!
This should be a interesting storm to watch. Alot depends on the wind directions coming off Lake Michigan. I think everyone here in west Michigan will get some additional snows this week. It wouldn’t surprise me that some schools will be closed on Thursday. What I been hearing it will start getting nasty later on and be this way all night. What will be the biggest concern is the winds, lake effect. I have 37F here in Hastings.
Look at the moisture in to our south getting into the system, front is slow, moisture should be better for 4 to 6 hours tonight and rates could be 1/2 or more per hours x 5 hours and 2.5 should fall and if rates are any higher and they could be then 3 or 4 inches could fall. I updated my map and it’s almost the same as Tuesday but added a few counties northwest of Gratiot to the 4 to 6 area. Again I think 2 to 3 solid inches for GRR to MBS looks like a good bet.
Hey everyone… remember Jeff Tanchak?

Nice storms firing to the south in Ark/Texas
Not many things more depressing in the weather than having a day when you are expecting snow, and then you watch snow melt all day, and then it rains.
Still light snow falling here.. so far only 0.2″ has fallen.
Little or no snow accumulation my favorite words in a forecast.
Be nice to have all the snow melt, to see the ground again.

It’s ok… We have enough snow for now.. I can feel good knowing that this is losing steam LOL I don’t want to be snowed in this winter.
So how much snow are we looking at this end of the week and weekend? LES and from storms?
Russell dont be a humbug…
A winter Storm watch will probably go into effect later tonight, or tomorrow morning!!!
Well, Dan it looks like some of the accumulating snows will start tomorrow night!!! And go through the weekend!!! I dont have a snow forcast yet, but I will look at models and come up with one soon, probably tomorrow, tho!!!

So much for any snow tonight. I just checked radars to see when it was going to be here and I see the front is pretty much coming through dry. What happened???
Really. I hate LES! Why? Because I’m on the east side of the state and I have to hear all of you guys shouting for joy at how hard it is snowing, while I’m sitting in the sunshine. Do you know how much that sucks???
Just had to get that whine off my chest. I feel much better now!
do you think any clossings will happen??
When? Friday? Probably not, but its possible!
haha. craig- i would take it a lot worse than you if I lived over there. All I can say is.. move over to the west side of the state. haha
This day makes me grumpy. I can’t believe how far off the forcasts have been. It never fails that I get my hopes up for some snow then I sit and watch it rain all night. I won’t be suprised at all if I wake up to green grass in the morning. All I can say is that I hope there is snow up in Baldwin this weekend. The trails are open and I am riding!!
Jevon, kind of hard to not be when you’re in my shoes, I won’t go into details.
Night Everyone!
Any thoughts on how long the LES will hold up for the lakeshore area tonight?
I woke up Sunday morning to a winter storm warning, and the mention of blizzard conditions Thursday. Sunday was a dud, and I’ll wake up to patches of green grass tomorrow. Seems like as we get closer to an event, it dwindles. Hopefully, not the sign of things to come.
CRAIG!! I feel your pain man! I feel the same way… I’m over here in Battle Creek, in the sun/cloudy conditions… and when I look west.. I can actually see the lake effect clouds! Its a tease.
snowing here….I see 10….oh wait 12 flakes.,…..oh well, Ill still have to head out and salt tonight I bet it will get slick unless pavement dries before it freezes, which sometimes happens as the temps drop.
hey everyone updates on LES?
Updates on the LES? It looks like it’s begun…

this just updated..off to bed
You better quit dissing mother nature… or you get none Mr Craig…LOL
It will be interesting to see how far inland the lake effect snows come. Here in Hastings, we get the tail end of the lake effect, the wind directions have to be just right. Sounds like we will have a white Christmas. I know the last few years, it was always questionable.
its been snowing hard here all day, but we only have gotten about 1-2 inches of fluffy snow, we better not be wasting this cold weather w/out me being able to go snowmobiling!
