Monday – calm B4 the storm

December 7th, 2008 at 2:01 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local 2 AM Monday update: First some mood music.   All the warnings/advisories have been cancelled or expired.  However, we still have some light to moderate snow north of a line from Manistee to St. Johns and moving away.   Snow depths Monday AM:  7″ GRR – 12″ MKG, – 4″ LAN – 8″ East GRR and Alpine Twp., over a foot on the ground in Paw Paw, near Allegan and NW of Fremont. 20-23″ at several locations from eastern Manistee Co. to the TVC and Gaylord areas.  Lake Ann was up to 30″ on the ground! The Muskegon Airport had 11.2″ of snow on Saturday, the snowiest 12/6 in their history.  Lansing had only 0.8″ Saturday…you can see the difference it made to be close to the lake.  Main band of snow from Grand Haven to just west of Kalamazo    WOW gusts to 56 mph Saturday evening at the Holland Channel and 46 mph on the beach at Muskegon!  As of 1 a.m., 6 to 8″ of new snow in Zeeland and Kalamazoo, Schoolcraft is up to 11″ of new snow and 9″ in Oshtemo.  16-19″ of snow on the ground in Hesperia.   10-15″ of new snow since Friday evening in Oceana Co.  Also a foot of new snow 4 miles west of Ravenna with 17″ on the ground there!  10″ of snow on the ground near Rockford and in Muskegon.  Bill Marino has had 14″ (storm total) in south Grandville.  Also a report of 14″ near White CloudClick here for W. Michigan snow totals and here for Northern Michigan snow totals.   Melstrand had a foot of new snow in Alger Co. in the U.P.   Check out the West Michigan snowfall totals, latest state weather observations, local radar, and the local surface weather map.  Here’s the NAM snowfall forecast thru 84-hours, and the GFS model snowfall forecast through 120 hours.  Here’s the latest discussion from the GRR NWS and Grand Rapids radar. Here’s a close-up satellite picture of Lake Michigan from 12/4 showing it clear with snow cover across NE Illinois and SE Wisconsin and the lake-effect clouds forming and moving over Lower Michigan.    They have 27″ of snow on the ground near Gaylord and Alba in northern Lower Michigan, and 22″ on the ground at Wellston in Manistee Co.  If you REALLY like snow, head to Alyeska, Alaska…they’ve ALREADY had 221″ of snow this season and they have 95″ of snow on the ground (that’s almost 8 feet!).    WOW!!…4.7″ of snow in ONE HOUR…NWS Employee Report…23″ on the ground!!  That was up near Gaylord Thursday evening.  26% of the Lower 48 states has a snow cover as of Sunday AM.  We’ve had seven days in a row with measurable snow and 22.6″ for the season here in GRR.   Muskegon is at 35.6″ for the season.  Marquette is at 56.1″ for the season. I was at Becky’s 30th surprise birthday party Friday evening!   Her friends said she was a Bill Steffen fan and asked if I could be part of the surprise!  Then Saturday Night I went to Sue’s (a friend) birthday dinner party.  Lots of fun!

  2. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Oh what dreams are made of, looking at that map kevin,
I was looking at that also, but I just cant jump into it yet…last year when the models threw that much snow, we ususally recievd half…
so IM waiting…but until then let it snow…..
Michael, Im just now up to 1.5″ here…arrggggh!

  3. Jevon Murphy says:

Tyler…models show that, that clipper system will only give us probably another 4-7″ advisory type snow for Ottawa, Muskegon, Newago, and Oceana counties to the north with a SW-S wind again…which is good for me!!!

  4. kevin. w says:

Quick response to my mail bill I’m waiting on the rpm, ruc, and canadian models to come out this evening. I just put my snow report into the NWS and mentioned the storm next week and gave me a short note and said that this could be a very powerful snow producer. It looks like polar, pacific and subtropical jets merge over southwest u.s sunday night with severe weather (possible tornadoes) icing and blizzard conditions from iowa, northern illinois, wisconsin and michigan. Close to 3inch. precip totals for michigan could translate to close to 15 to 20 inches of snow Bill. Look for response in mail shortly.

  5. Jevon Murphy says:

An additional 4-7 inches does sound good to me, tho!!!

  6. Jevon Murphy says:

The NWS says 15-20 inches of snow are possible…huh…Well, I totally agree with them after digging very deeply into computer models…

  7. Jevon Murphy says:

    Tyler…Tuesday night into Wednesday

  8. so could we be talking about winter storm watches?

  9. is there somewhere that the NWS says 15-20″ is possible?

  10. Jevon Murphy says:

I’ say between Monday morning and Tuesday morning sometime Tyler…Maybe even Blizzard watches!!!

  11. Dale P (Paw Paw) says:

    Hey Craig,
I would dirve to hang with you and ctch them big gills dude! I am your way quite a bit with a lot of biz in AA2, Flushing, Clio ect.

15-20 in for the next storm? Let’s get all the models to agree before we start freakn everyone out on this one.

Something like that could give some similarities to 1977-78 storms of the century added on top of what we have already.

    Wow!

  12. Jevon Murphy says:

Dale…The NWS is saying it!!! If you look at Kevin’s last message!!!

  13. ahh guys..dont give my hopes up!!

  14. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Finally, we got mod/hvy snow here..1/2 mile vis

maybe my meager 1.5″ will double??

  15. Tim Walters (Holland) says:

A storm like that would be catastropic on top of what many areas already have.

  16. Jevon Murphy says:

It would be awesome to see tho…also with the lack of sunspots you can expect a storm like that…

  17. Jevon Murphy says:

Still snowing pretty hard in Dalton Township…its coming down at about 1.5 inces/hour

  18. Bill has posted a new thread on the next storm

  19. kevin. w says:

Don’t start flipping out people on this next storm, its going to be probably a 3 day event but it could be a very strong one if What I’ve been looking at the past 24 hours is right. Someone could end up with over 20 inches if this comes together right. And someone is going to end up with a significant ice storm, I see bill is fooling around he already has the map up on it, so he’s digging into it like I’ve been doing. You know the longer range models have another hum dinger of storm the following week as well.

  20. Jevon Murphy says:

Well this one is only a couple days away so these one’s are probably, for the most part right on!!!

  21. Jevon Murphy says:

Kevin…every one has moved to Bill’s new link go there if you want to talk more!!!

  22. Craig (Holly St Park area) says:

Dale – get back with me after we get some ice and maybe we can hook up (pun intended)!

  23. Joseph says:

  30. John B in Kzoo says:

I stuck a ruler in the driveway 10 minutes ago and we just topped 7 inches for the day here in NW Kalamazoo!
    Snowing hard.

  31. Tyler(Holland) says:

    Snowfall since yesterday.
Cleared about 4″ out of the driveway yesterday afternoon.
This morning cleared out about 6″ more.
Cleared out about 2″ This afternoon.
About 4″ more in the driveway now!
    Total-14″ for the storm.

  32. Chip (Holland) says:

Is Holland going to get more snow tonight?

  33. LightningWatcher says:

Wow what a good snow that was here around Allegan city. Have to retract my statement earlier about the county plows. Didn’t realise there were still that many considerate people around, the plow I seen the other morning was letting up his plow so s/he didn’t bombard me going by. Nice to see the city plowing the downtown sidewalks too. Allegan has front loaders out so there were some intense snow falls around. Here in town we got some pretty good snow that I walked through, well over knee deep in many places, some places up to my waste and I’m about 6′ tall. On average though just below my knees.

  34. Just took the puppy out at 4:30. Patches of clear sky above with twinkling stars visible — never thought I’d see it again! Then what I’d call the sounds of urban iceburg calving: snowplow services dropping and dragging their plows on driveways and their warning buzzers popping up to the left, right, and all around the area. If the air hadn’t been clear, I might have seen the glow of yellow flashes from their warning lights like an urban borealis. It was pretty magical to me, and the puppy kept stopping, propping its ears up, and listening as if it were hearing some kind of strange monster on its way over.

  35. Nancy Pierson says:

Hi Bill, I’m a teacher at Central Montcalm Public Schools in Stanton. I am looking for some statistics on snowfall dates/amounts for each month in 2008 up to present. Do you have that information? Or could you send me a link to help me locate it? I’d really appreciate it! Thanks, and hang onto your hat for the upcoming stormy weather!
