Weather closes schools…in HAWAII!!
40 schools were closed in Hawaii on Friday as heavy rains caused flooding and closed beaches. Rainfall totals included 6.89″ at Kaneohe, 5.26″ in Lihue (10.99″ in 3 days!) and 3.42″ in Honolulu (7.12″ in the first two weeks of Dec.). Watch a slide show of flooding pictures. The storm produced 50 mph winds and 15-foot waves. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for the high peaks of the Big Island for “less than 5″ of snow”. The USS Arizona Memorial Visitor’s Center canceled ferry tours to the memorial for the day. The Polynesian Cultural Center was also closed. A rockslide closed a major road north of Honolulu. A total of 385,000 gallons of treated and untreated waste water overflowed into streams, lakes and the ocean. In Hawaii this is called a “Brown Water Advisory” (Eewww!). 14,000 customers were without power, and traffic was snarled because street lights weren’t working. BYU’s Hawaii’s Graduation Ceremony was postponed, and the Red Cross opened shelters for those without power. Two homes were swept off their foundations by floodwaters. Heavy rain continues to fall, check out Hawaii radar. Gov. Lingle has declared a State Disaster Proclamation for Oahu, Kauai, and Maui.
I just saw that, crazy! Huge line of rain moving into Oahu!
I have been to the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu. Reading that in your post brought back all the memories of the fun I had.
Hello Michigan! No snow here, but it was 30 today, and it’s going to be 60 on Monday with rain Monday night!
Our island is under water here and can handle no more! Three straight days and homes are floating away! roads turning into roaring rivers and beaches are full of sewage overspill.
I see though that other States are sufferiing blistering winter weather and i know when this storm passes and the sun starts shinning again it is once again paradise.
Aloha.
In Grand Rapids, we used to call them ( the overflow ) BROWN TROUT.
