Rescued!
A dozen people were rescued from Green Bay on New Years Day after heading out to ice fish in their pickup trucks and all-terrain vehicles. An 800-foot freighter left the Green Bay harbor, and even though it passed a good distance from the fishermen, the waves caused the ice to ripple and then break from shore, leaving about 500 yards of open water (five football fields!). The fissure extended for at least six miles. The stranded fisherman were about a mile from shore when they were rescued. Unfortunately, two pickup trucks and three all-terrain vehicles are still on the ice and will remain there until the ice refreezes to shore or until they fall into the bay.
WooHoo! Number 1.
Hopefully the ice will refreeze so they can get the trucks/ATVs!
If that were my truck out there I would have called in a helicopter regardless the cost and would have had it air lifted off the ice. Even if I didn’t have the money I would have borrowed it or something.. what a story. I wish all of those folks the best on getting their vehicles back safe and dry!!
Thata was some story they had that on the news last night…CNN or one of therm?
Glad they were able to rescue those people without them falling into the water! Perhaps, with the colder temps they can get their vehicles back.
Glad ever one got off the ice safe…I maybe wrong but I think I have read or heard that if you leave your car (or truck) on the ice and it falls in you will be fined for polluting the water has anyone else heard any thing on this?
The sun is now out here (first time in 2009?) and 29°

Shipping channel activity info is posted and easily available. Since these guys are from Green Bay and didn’t check to make sure it was safe one has to conclude that they come from a shallow gene pool. Fortunately, no one was lost though thinning this herd might prevent a repeat.
Slim Jim, I have heard there are big fines and fees. Also, what I hear, auto insurance doesn’t cover any of the recovery or repair damages. I hope these people have a nice savings account. Maybe the water will freeze up good and they can drive their vechicles off the ice. I would hate to go home and explain this one to my wife.lol
They probably were not expecting a freighter to go thru and cause the ice to break. Bad Luck!!!
If they did that in Michigan they would get a notice for abandoned vehicles. If you have a car or truck go thru the ice at Houghton Lake be prepared to shell out some coin. The ticket for polluting the water. The cost to have it removed or worse letting them handle that for you! Good Luck guys.
Anyone who drives their car onto a slab of ice on a lake is not thinking clearly in my opinion. Just plain nuts!
Happens sometimes … http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=87805
There were lots of trucks on our lake near Cadillac this weekend. Depends on ice thickness.
