Review: Tropic Thunder is not that good

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm by Laff at the Movies under Entertainment

I’ve heard all the hype from the critics.. I just don’t get it, yes this movie had funny moments, but its not the funniest movie of the year… not even top 3 !!!

Yes, the movie had a lot of funny one-liners… but all but one or two were in the trailers and clips shown on tv or the internet to promote the movie.  I forgot to add this to my Birthday Wish List… please Hollywood – stop putting the only funny parts of a comedy in the trailers and previews… or stop making movies than only have enough funny moments for the trailers!!
"Tropic Thunder" poster courtesy DreamWorks Robert Downey, Jr. was good, Ben Stiller was okay, Jack Black was okay, Tom Cruise was pretty funny, Steve Coogan was okay, and Matthew McConaughey was good.

The story was okay… the cinematography and editing was good… but there was nothing GREAT that made the movie better.

Again, most of the funny stuff was in the trailers… unlike “Role Models”,  ”Step Brothers”, and “Burn After Reading”… where there were more than just the funny lines in the previews to keep you laughing throughout.

THE BOTTOM LINE: There’s a lot of stuff in this movie that would be funnier to people working in the business… I guess that’s why so many critics and people in the movie industry think this movie is so funny. Its kind of like how those of us in the local tv news think “Anchorman” (2004) is so funny and anyone who works in an office thinks that ”Office Space” (1999) is funny.  But since I don’t know all of the inside jokes of this movie… and knew most of the jokes before I ever saw the movie… I have to give it 6.5 out of 10.

“Tropic Thunder”

    Are you kidding me!
This is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long, long time. I think it makes my Top 5 comedies of all time.

  2. GRWebguy says:

I thought it was “funny”, not “so funny”.
The really long introduction with movie scene, tons of swearing and nothing funny almost had me walking out the door. It came around.

I did like that the movie was the first digital open captioned movie I had ever seen – Studio 28 had received two copies, one a copy with the “burnt in” open captions – and I caught the show before they figured it out. We have not found any other movie yet to be shipped with the Open Captioning.

    OPEN CAPTIONS RULE!

  3. John Lee Pitamore says:

This movie was a waste of money & production no funny parts at all.
This movie really makes the reputation of the actors go down the drain.

  4. Zeelander says:

I thought the topic and actors would have produced a great movie…I was wrong….Is it me or does Hollywood swear every other word during their normal conversation???? I can put up with a swear word or two when the situation with the character could justify it(and in parts of this movie it could be justified)….the constant mutiple swearing in each sentence by the actors/characters with out justification….just screams lack of talent by the writer/director/actor….it sure isn’t funny….a big waste of my time and money…maybe the future remake will actually think and allow some actual acting to take place!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve no desire to see any movie that the actors are a part of in the future…if I was one of them I’d fire and then sue my agent for making me a part of such a joke of a film.
