Heavy Snow
<–Lake Superior Ice Ridge. Heavy snow fell in the Houghton/Hancock area Sunday Night into Monday. Check out these snowfall totals (5″ in an hour!…and 24″ in 6 1/2 hours!!) and the snowfall in Menominee Co. Check out the webcams at Michigan Tech University, and the four feet of snow on the ground at Twin Lakes. Allouez Township as 40″ on the ground and 224″ for the season.
WOW, 5″ in one hour. I wonder if that has ever happen here in west Michigan before, 5″ in one hour?
They got 14″ in 3 hours!!!
Larry I am not sure if it was in an hour or not but in Late December of 1983 we had over 4″ in a very short period of time…We were shopping at Meijer’s and when we got out you could not see a thing and by the time we got home there was 4″ of new snow on the ground…However several days latter it warmed up (to 60 and better) and the snow was gone as fast as it came. I will have to look up the dates.

light snow falling here with a temp of 16°

This morning, woke up to 3″ in Saugatuck Twp….drove 5 miles to Laketown Twp which is in between Saugatuck and Holland and they had 6″ overnight. I was shocked. I think it surprised the road crews as well, as some of the roads had not been touched.
In regards to heavy snow over a short period of time…we once got 6″ in an hour and a half in Dec. 2002 or 2001.
Larry,
We had 5 inches an hour a few years ago in Hastings. I was plowing snow and the thundersnow kicked in over night. It snowed so hard that we had to stop our trucks. I couldn’t even see my plow for a while. I was in the middle of a parking lot while I was stopped for almost 1/2 hour. By the the hours end, we had 5 inches in the areas that were plowed. I have only seen it once, but it was enough. I believe that we ended up with 15 inches that day.
Has anyone kept yearly snowfall amount for the Fennville – Saugatuck area???

look at this big daddy
Dave, I live in Saug. Twp and am up to 128″ for the year. Tyler, the big daddy on that map looks like a big rain or storm producer for us. Yesterday, that was our blizzard.
I don’t understand that map, what does it mean in regards to inches? And just when is this possibly forecasted for?
Tyler,
May I ask that you add a short description and date of potential event when you post these images for we Novices?
The graphic quality of the text is horrible. My reaction is usually “Wow”, when, what?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff
That map is a computer generated forecast for NEXT Thursday. IF it verifies we would have temps up in the 40’s or 50’s with heavy rain and wind and a chance of thunderstorms. There would be a raging blizzard over western Wisconsin and Minnesota.
At this point, you can ignore the details, but look for some more interesting weather in the time frame.
Big daddy for west of us, for us it would be heavy rain and or some thunderstorms with a south-southwest wind.
guys we still have a bagillion more runs…soo this thing better move SE

heres that storm on the 12z run..today
Yes Tyler could you post the time frame for those model images? I would appreciate it too! Thanks Michael G and Mark for interpreting!
So its rain for us, NO SNOW….shoot I am about ready to give up on this Winter in terms of remaining synoptic snows. What does it look like beyond this week and into next week? WARM again? Accuweather has there take but the kind of are like the Weather Channel. They miss it more than they call it correctly!
this would b not this thursday but NEXT thursday
again..models r gonna flipflop all over so we dont know if it’ll b rain or snow
I wanna know where the pic of the ice ridge came from so I can go see it more clearly. Thanks, Carrie
Dan, Now that storm is getting closer to being interesting, still looks like plenty of rain that changes to snow for Lansing to Mt Pleasant east with more of a mix or snow west, but if this is a trend it could be all snow or even miss us as the storms of late are trending east vs the early season systems trending northwest. Worthy of keeping an eye on but still plenty of time remains to not get to exctited about just yet. (Flip Flop yep your correct Tyler)
I think winter is on its way out for southern Michigan but the U.P. has 8 more months to go lol. I was wondering does Grand Rapids see any snowfalls at all in the month of February? 24 inches of snow fell btw in 7 hours I believe in the kewaneew Peninsula. Isn’t that something, you would think they would call the national guard in up there with that much snow in 7 hours. I am going to get a break from the snow and cold late this month into early March down south in Mississippi. It should be in the 60’s possibly 70’s down there. Spring is usually in full swing down there at that time.
Oh Bill posted about this already didnt read the full blog lol. Yeah my parents drove from the wisconsin border to the Northern U.P. and they said it was a whiteout yesterday couldnt see 2 feet in front of you.
Wow! I have friends who live way out in the woods outside Toivola (Twin Lakes), where there’s 4 feet of snow on the ground. I used to deer hunt up there. I can’t imagine living with that year after year. Of course, they’re Finnish, so they love it!
