Anxiety and the Economoy

March 19th, 2009 at 11:26 am by under Uncategorized, Your Money

It’s no secret that our economy seems to wax and wane on any given day, often with significant ups and downs, with no predictability. There’s news on the value of the dollar, home construction, education, the national debt, people losing their jobs, and the list could go on and on. I’ve heard it said recently, that in order for someone to be emotionally healthy, you actually have to stop listening to the economic news. There seems to be some truth to this notion that if we continuously fill our minds with negative, anxiety provoking thoughts then our own anxiety and stress levels will increase as well.

I see this pattern on a daily basis with the clients I see. If we focus on the negative, focus on the anxiety, focus on what is going wrong, this only serves to constrain our perspective and we begin to only see what’s going wrong in our part of the world.

Take some time with me today, this week, and this weekend to step back from what is normal and focus on the warm weather, time with friends, laughter with family, and getting outside and enjoying the spring breeze.

some days its tough to ignore the bad news….

If your like me, I make my living out of placing a price on things that are not in my full control…things such as weather, unknown existing conditions that can cost the company a small fortune and therefore we have to guess at there impact on the project( some call this risk management). As such, I also review those guessed at costs and compare them to real cost data…the good breaks are wind falls and are only reviewed if we have a verry similar project…the bad breaks on a project get reviewed…It’s impossible to avoid them…to keep our company afloat the fewer mis-judgements the better..i.e. an optimist would only be in business during the mega boom years then lose the company during the first bad year…

I do try and stay away from the news at night…I’m also lucky…my wife is an extreme optimist and each night and week ends I don’t see anything too bad..opposites attract I guess….

The selling off my 401K stocks was the best thing I could have done…I really don’t care how the market does anymore!!!!

  2. Thanks for the post! Deep breathing exercises are excellent for anxiety and many people report positive results from meditation. Some other natural anxiety remedies to look into are St.John’s Wort, SAMe, L-Theanine, and Tryptophan.

The way I see it. The news people say one day oh better numbers. Then the next day well where not out of this yet. The facts are that one in five workers in mich are out of work. state aid has gone from 11000 in 2006. To almost 41000 here in kent county alone. With 100000 workers unemployment maxed out. While the senate ways and means debates our lives away.
