Few Tornadoes in March
<–tornado damage near Springfield, IL on 3/8/09. It’s now officially spring! The vernal equinox occurs Friday morning at 7:44 AM. Usually at this time of year the severe weather season is well underway in the U.S. However, we’ve had very few severe storms this month. In the last week there has been only one small tornado, two reports of minor wind damage and only one report of severe criteria hail in the entire country! There were no tornadoes in the U.S. on 15 of the first 18 days of March. We have had 33 recorded twisters this month, but most have been small (only one rated EF3) and there have been no tornado fatalities. The three-year average for tornadoes in March is 149. Annually, the number of violent tornadoes (EF4-EF5) in both Michigan and the U.S. has decreased since the mid 1970s.
Big storm system coming next week!
Rachel, snow or rain?
I hope rain but accuweather says big severe weather outbreak in the plains and maybe just maybe we could get a taste here by Wednesday.
The latest CPC long range guess is out and never fear they really stick their nicks out as according to the CPC long range guess most of the next year has a equal chance of being being either average above or below. The exception of course is next winter which they are guessing for above average once again.

I did check out Accuweather about next week. Looks like things will be heating up in the plains. It will be interesting to see if the system gets near Michigan. Next month is when I think our fun might begin with severe weather.(not too much fun)
With the last 3-5 yrs I would say the amount of large tornadoes have been on the increase! There have been 4 or 5 EF5s and even more EF4s…Maybe this is just a lull in the action!!!?
Bill…When is the sky warn meeting in Muskegon?
I like to hope winter is done even here in the U.P. There is for the most part bare ground in Marquette but in the shaded areas they still have 6 to 8 inches in those spots. They still have huge snowbanks left too. In Escanaba there is virtually no snow left anywhere on the ground. A few traces here and there but much less snow than Marquette but still snowbanks left too just not as high as Marquette’s. It was 62 degrees just 6 miles inland away from Lake Michigan in Bark river just west of Escanaba last Monday so things are looking up. It cooled off today significantly in the upper 20’s but back in the low 40’s tommorow then upper 40’s by saturday.
Skywarn meeting for Muskegon County was already held, last month.
