Severe Weather Sunday

April 26th, 2009 at 12:59 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

1630 UTC Day 1 Outlook <–Click on the maps for full screen and the discussions. There is a rare High Risk Area for Severe Storms this PM in the southern Plains. The Slight Risk for today come east to Lake Michigan.  Eleven tornadoes so far…including several in NE Iowa.  Check out the tornado in Roll, OK., Kansas hail and damage, tornado near Udall, KS, and near Lawrence, KS (one fatality).    We are in the “See Text” area for Monday PM. Sunday PM it looks like showers/chc. t-shower with the severe stuff staying west of Lake Michigan. Monday PM it’ll depend a little on how warm we can get.  Here’s current watches (Wi to TX inc. a PDS watch for OK), any meso-discussions, severe reports today (nickel-sized hail just west of Chicago at Elgin), radar from Oklahoma City, Wichita,    Here you can find a slide show (on the right side) of hail/tornadoes in Oklahoma.  More later, I’m still looking at data.

You couldn’t pay me to live anywhere near that area (high risk area)! And I’m pretty sure that most of the homes there do not have basements? We are lucky to be here in West Michigan and have the lake to help reduce the blunt of the storms (most of the time).

    1. Jayce says:

Don’t you mean “brunt” — not “blunt” — of the storms?

I would love to be chasing today, out in Kansas and Oklahome

Anytime I worked state fairs down toward Texas, Oklahoma, or Kansas. It wasn’t hard to find a vendor pushing prefab storm shelters. Some of the big tornadoes they get down there, even a basement isn’t effective. So a lot of people get these storm bunkers that a contractor will come out and bury in your yard. Some of them were upwards of $15,000 installed, maybe higher.

  6. Todd A (in Holland) says:

Interesting to see a High Risk outlook again, usually trouble is on the horizon. Seeing 2 tornado watches that include PDS’s is never a good thing.

LW–if I lived down in Texas, Oklahoma, or Kansas I’d spend the 15k on the shelter. I’m worth it! lol

Turned on DTV channel 8.3 (8’s live radar) this afternoon and saw a storm on a radar from Amarillo TX heading right for that high risk area. This was after the rain moved north of here, so I guess the Storm Team 8 crew wanted to check out the real action!

We have good EHI values and midlevel lapse rates, decent cape and helicity….its so close all we need is a trigger…

    1. Sarah (in Martin) says:

I have no idea what that means, but a trigger would be fun! LOL. I love spring storms. And summer storms……
