Wednesday Weather

April 27th, 2009 at 2:35 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

Live Doppler Network Radar 0600 UTC Day 2 Outlook We’ve had at least a trace of rain on each of the last 10 days, and we’ve had 2.71″ in the last five days in GRR – some areas have had over 4″ of rain in the last five days!  Here’s live local radar and regional radar.  The map on the right is the Severe Weather Outlook area for Thursday.  It comes up almost to Chicago.  Check out the satellite radar loop, current Michigan weather observations, and the latest GRR discussion and the national lightning loop.  Only a couple of sprinkles south of G.R. now.  Skies are partly cloudy from G.R. North.  We still have some river flooding…the Grand in Comstock Park will come to about 1 to 1.5 ft. over flood stage.  (click for river data and Flood Warnings and Advisories).  Here’s national severe storm reports. Check out Tuesday’s highs (impressive low 90s on the East Coast).   Portland, Maine had their hottest April Day ever with a high of 92 yesterday!

Lake Michigan is still cold.  The water temp. at the mid-lake buoy west of Holland is only 37.6 and the high temp. yesterday at the buoy was just 41.9.   The next rain comes Thursday PM and we may see a couple of rounds of showers/t-showers between Thurs. PM and Saturday AM.  The Japanese model is looking rather cool for early next week.  Continue to resist planting frost sensitive plants unless you can cover them up.  We’re still looking toward mid-May for that.  Finally check out the Ski Brule rotating web cam video from last Wednesday (4/22).  It looks like mid-winter!  This is starting the 4th week of May!  Almost all of the snow has melted in the last 6 days…but really…the U.P. is a different world!

We sure had the rain. Standing water every where. Of course here under the topsoil is clay, doesn’t make for good conditions for the rain to soak in.
Just feels good to have heat off and windows open!
    Have a good Monday everyone!

  2. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Ready for a T-Storm, just not ready for addtiional rain!
No real photo op’s sat, with all the lower cloud deck!

  3. Steven (Hudsonville) says:

The camp I was at this weekend was terrible, as soon as it rained the entire place turned into mud and puddles. Now that I’m home, I’d love some rain. :D

I like this from the AFD- “SEVERE WEATHER IS STILL VERY MUCH A POSSIBILITY THIS AFTERNOON.”

  4. Maggie SW Wyoming/Grand Rapids says:

What a beautiful morning! Took the dog out for a morning walk took in some scenery, and beautiful sounds of nature.

  5. Sarah (in Martin) says:

Funny thing happened this morning….I went outside for a minute to pick up some toys that would become possible projectiles in this wind. A renegade lawn chair decided to fly across the yard and attack me from behind. It didn’t even have enough courage to “talk” to my face.

    1. Maggie SW Wyoming/Grand Rapids says:

      You are comical…..I just can’t stop laughing…..=)

      1. Sarah (in Martin) says:

I try. LOL. I have a bruise on my ankle from where it hit me.

  6. Beautiful sunny and windy morning here. I see the latest day 1 conv outlook has put NE indiana and SE michigan in the slight risk area.

  7. Watchman Tyler from Jenison says:

    really hope we get something!

  8. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

I see I’m firmly in the risk area. Bring it on. Going for 3 severe storms in 3 days!

  9. Kevin says:

    Eric,
I doubt that you’ll get that lucky. 3 in 3 days is pretty cool.

    1. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

Got two seperate severe storms on Saturday, tornado sirens and all.

  10. Windy and warm here. Sun poking through, the only clouds popping are a bunch of low clouds that will never amount to anything. Pretty sure the severe misses us today and develops closer to Lansing. Kind of too bad because I haven’t had any severe weather yet at my place, but we have had lots of rain so far, so the break will be nice.

  11. Watchman Tyler from Jenison says:

looks like a line is startingto form in Wisc

  12. Randy M (Comstock Park) says:

I’m hoping that the activity in central Illinois heads NW fast enough to provide a little action on this side of the state.

  13. Kevin says:

Direfloyd, I finally looked up your man-bear-pig! Nasty brother. I still feel sick.

    1. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

Now watch the episode at http://www.southparkstudios.com for a good laugh =)
      It is in season 10!

  14. Can’t wait for all the excitement!! Keeping an eye on the dewpoint. Kinda low right now.

  15. On another note – I see Mexico City had a 6.0 earthquake – wow – they are really getting hammered with plagues! Praying this swine flu goes away soon!

  16. Randy M (Comstock Park) says:

Looks like a new line of storms forming from SE Montcalm to around South Bend

  17. Patti (Zeeland) says:

Wow, the wind is really bad!
I’m hoping for a good storm tonight but it looks like it will miss us!
Still have a lot of standing water in fields, etc.

  18. Kevin says:

    Direfloyd,
did ya figure out who I am yet? It’s killing me.

    1. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

I’m not a stalker, don’t care =) Sorry it is killing you though…

      1. Kevin says:

You and I went to school together you dunce. Engineering ring a bell? Not stalking ya, just realized who you were Eric Bom^%#!

  19. Aww look no more slight risk…

Cloudy and breezy here.. cooling off a little too. Into the 60s now.

  20. michael g (SE GR) says:

Matt Kirkwood is still talking about the possibility of over two inches of rain tonight. That would cause some problems.

    1. Maggie SW Wyoming/Grand Rapids says:

Glad I live on top of a hill…=)

  21. Bill (Holland - Park Township) says:

All the standing water is going to set us up for some nightmare mosquito problems. I went outside last night at sundown to lock up the car as it started to sprinkle and I felt like I was back in Alaska!

Bill – do you have any mosquito predictions or related concerns that are popping up in conversations you are hearing?

We’ll be breaking out the DEET in Park Township all summer for sure.

    Bill

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Don’t worry about the skeeters. The Mexican Pig Flu will kill us all long before they are a problem. Suzie said so.

      1. Maggie SW Wyoming/Grand Rapids says:

That’s great….I think it was such a slow news week they needed something to report…Way over blown in my opinion.

    2. Sarah (in Martin) says:

Swatted a few skeeters late last week. Ugh.

  22. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

    .90 since 3pm here…..break out the boats

  23. Dave (BC) says:

The rain line is moving north. From the looks of things downtown GR will get at least another 1.5 inches overnight. Another soggy commute tomorrow morning…

Watch for flooded roads if you’re driving in the dark!

    Dave

  24. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

We have a very high water table once again this yaer…My basement is flooding for the 2nd time this year, and only the 2nd time since we’ve moved here in our 3 years that we’ve been here!

Starting to wonder if we need a new foundation!? Does anybody know?

  25. Tyler says:

Were supposed to get very cold air coming early next week. KSTP out of Minneapolis was saying this tonight at least for over there so I expect the entire midwest to be under a cold spell and thats early May!

    1. Rob Dale says:

I’m not sure I see a big cold snap headed our way… Looks like a little below normal for a few days, but nothing extreme. How bad are you thinking it’ll get?

  26. boman says:

    dream on yooper!

  27. Judi says:

Was a long, cold winter, hope this is not a long, wet summer. Tired of being in the house so much!

  28. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

2″ on the level at my house since 3pm yesterday!
    Now over 4.5″ since saturday!
House is surrounded by water! Row,.. Row… Row your boat!

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

I am now at 4.09 sense Saturday.
      SlimJim

  29. Steven (Hudsonville) says:

We’re just barely outside of the slight risk areas for both days 3 and 4. I’m sick of being just outside of the areas! I’d rather they were nowhere near us or that we were in them. So close, and yet so far…. :)

    http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/

  30. Julie says:

The sun is a beautiful site. Keep it coming, no more rain, and a nice dry weekend would be very nice:)

  31. Judy says:

    Water, water, everywhere!!!

A moat is forming around my house….again. There is no lake, river, or stream near my property, but there is a pond that has formed across the road due to the snow melt and rain saturating the soil, and three times this spring it has poured across the road into my neighbor’s and my yards. Lost our flooring to it in March. Haven’t replaced the flooring as we are waiting for our puppy to finally get house trained. Insurance didn’t cover it because it was due to flooding and you can’t get flood insurance unless you live in a flood plain.

I’m really hoping that we don’t get too much more rain this week. I’m already going to have to park at the road to be sure I can get out to go to work until the water goes down again.

I called Allegan County dispatch at 6am this morning to have them put out warning signs so that nobody would come driving down the road and hit the water and possibly get hurt. They got back with me and said that the road commission already knew that the water was coming across the road. However, no signs have been place to warn anyone as of 1:30pm. So if anyone is driving down 118th Ave in Allegan Co, be aware that there is water flowing across the road between 51st and 48th st (not deep, but enough to hydroplane on).

    Judy

  32. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Partly Cloudy and 52° here. I have recorded 4.09″ of rain here sense Saturday. There is some ponding of water in the area also have water coming up in the basement (it dose that when we have a LOT of rain) I hope the rain later in the week is on the lighter side. As it is we will be cutting the grass two or more times a week now until June I am afraid.
    SlimJim

  33. Travis (Martin/Hopkins, Allegan County) says:

well we have been right in the path of the rain this weekend..we got 2.35″ on saturday and sunday. and last night we got 2.50″ more inches…so we got about 4.85″ inches since saturday night!

  34. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

Anyone know where Bill has been?

  35. Hmm looks as if all the severe stays to our south again just not enough warmth and destabilization to be had this time I don’t think.

57F here at my place. I would like to update you all though, I will be moving to Kent City, MI within the next week, I will fall off the internet for a few days, but when I return, I shall be blogging from Kent City. There are no weather stations near enough for an accurate reading of rainfall etc though, and the nearest is too far away and not a rapid fire station.

When I get the money I will have to buy one.. any suggestions on some sort of rapid fire weather station? Thanks!
