Saturday Night

May 30th, 2009 at 1:27 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local Saturday 10:15 PM Not a lot of rain in our area today.  At 6 PM in G.R. it was 72 degrees with a dewpoint of 40 and a humidity of only 31%.  It’s hard to get a shower going much less a thunderstorm when the air is this dry.  The wind has really died down after getting gusts of 30-35 mph today.    It’s was only 54 on the beach at Muskegon at mid-afternoon and the mid-lake buoy showed an air temp. of 45.5 and a water temp. of 40.6.  It’s snowing right now north of Lake Superior at Geraldton and Armstrong Station. Pickle Lake, Ontario is 30 degrees, snowing and the wind is NW 20.  Kinross near S. Ste. Marie is already down in the upper 30s at 9 PM with a stiff, cold wind.  There was one marginal severe weather report in Michigan, a gust to 60 mph near Oscoda.  Severe weather did hit central Indiana and southern Ohio with several tornadoes, wind damage and hail.   Sunday should be dry, cool and pleasant.  Here’s the visible satellite loop (daytime only).     Up to 3.8″ of rain fell in Eaton and Ingham Counties Weds. Night.  Some people had to be rescued from their vehicles this evening near Lansing!  High temps. Wednesday:  59 Mt. Pleasant, 61 in Big Rapids, 78 Grand Rapids, 51 Port Hope along the Lake Huron shore.  80  in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.      Here’s some 24-hour rainfall totals (Fennville – 1.77″, Montague – 1.68″, Grandville – 1.46″, Holland – 1.43″, Grand Rapids – 1.33″) current Michigan weather observations, the latest Grand Rapids NWS discussion, Grand Rapids NWS radar, Great Lakes radar, national radar.

  1. Looks like we’ll have some interesting weather in a few minutes at our house. I wasn’t paying any attention to the weather until I just heard thunder and checked the radar.

i hear thunder here in wyoming now

  3. Barb says:

I thought I heard thunder got all excited and then found my son playing video games with his sub woofer on.

  4. Jennifer K (Plainfield TWP) says:

    Just rain here.

  5. We’ve had a few rounds of heavy downpours, and some good shows of lightning over the lake. Standard issue “thundershowers”. Nice.

This rain is perfectly timed for all those gardens and farms planted just planted…………..now let’s pray it does so in June and July with no drought this year……….can’t believe it’s been 5 years since the “big flood” on the Grand River in May 2004.

  8. Marti B. (Grandville) says:

Ahhhhhhhhhh the wonderful sound of thunder! I’ve been working all night long typing medical reports (quieter at night) and now I hear this wonderful sound amidst the birds singing in the fir tree in my courtyard. Wonderful sounds! :)

  9. Marti B. (Grandville) says:

WOW! Just pouring down rain right now. I notice on Doppler there is a tad red area coming into my area right now.

We need that rain. I love to hear it on my roof.

  10. I’m getting a really light shower now..

  11. Ryan says:

Wow, I’m shocked that here in the Lansing area we received 3 inches (or more, some reports say 4 inches) of rain! I went to sleep around 11:30 PM last night, and it was raining, and after checking the conditions today, I noticed it rained most of the night. Then, despite a brief HEAVY downpour on the way to work this morning, it was mostly dry for much of the day, at least in Mason, 12 miles south of here. I noticed the radar showed some t-storms while it was dry in Mason during the afternoon. Then after I got home around 5, it started raining HARD again, and was at least moderate rain for 2 or 3 hours. Still, that didn’t seem like it could be that high a total, but I guess with some heavy downpours, the totals can add up quickly!

  12. Larry of Hastings/Barry Co. says:

We missed on any good storms here in Hastings. The storm stayed just south of Hastings, before moving into Eaton Co. You could here the thunder and we did get some rain. I can remember years ago it was chilly for the first few days of June(early 80’s).

  13. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

1.15″ here in St.Johns, from yesterdays rains

  14. Sandi says:

This is the strangest spring…warm one day, cold the next…lawn looks fantastic but plants are slow to bloom. Bill will we ever get summer?

    1. unbelieveable weather says:

horrible weather today, it felt like late october out. jesus i pray this cold weather takes a hike pretty soon. only 3 weeks left until summer starts and it feels like fall out. i wonder myself if we won’t have a cold summer like back in 2003 or 2004.

  15. unbelieveable weather says:

Bill do you see us in the 80’s at all come lets say late june, july or august? or will we be stuck in this rut of 60’s & low 70’s? i can’t believe these are normal highs by any means. id like to go to the lake, go fishing with my kids and go to the beach this summer to without wearing a jacket!

    1. Rob Dale says:

Nobody said today’s temperatures were normal.

And you don’t need to have too much weather background to know that we’ll see 80 at least once this summer ;)

      1. unbelieveable weather says:

better be more than once man.

  16. unbelieveable weather says:

i just looked at the temps in detroit and it’s 67 degrees out right now. that’s more than 10 degrees warmer than us over here. i feel the cold lake has something to do with these temp drops that seem to happen “every weekend”. we need a good stretch of warm weather to warm the lake up and i think we will be golden. if i see too cold of a summer coming, it may be time for me and the family to pack up and move back east to detroit so i can enjoy the summer. winter is bad enough over here!

    1. Rob Dale says:

No, it’s the cold front that has us colder than they are.

      1. unbelieveable weather says:

we need some warm fronts to swing by and stay put, i need me some southern flow here!

  17. Al Gore's Dad says:

    unbelieveable….hush yo mowf!!!

  18. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Looks like another “cool” several days ahead! We may have it wait until mid June before we get any real summer weather. 50° here now.

  22. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

    Hey Bill,
It looks like we will be getting into a more active weather pattern starting next week and into mid-month!

  23. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

Bill…If the CPC is predicting a slightly cooler than average summer than doesnt that mean that we should see slightly above average precip. due to the fact that we will need more weather systems to come through to keep us a little cooler?

    1. feels like fall says:

i don’t care if it’s slightly cooler, i just hope we can at least be in the low 80’s for gods sake. these low 50’s & 60’s are getting ridiculous to say the least! i think bill needs to elaborate and tell us just how cold of a summer he thinks we may get here and why?

  24. feels like fall says:

from the looks of things i don’t see any warm weather nor any potential for severe storms at all for the next 15 days according to accuweather.

  25. Larry of Hastings/Barry Co. says:

I might move back south again, if it doesn’t warm up.

    1. fixxxer says:

heres a reply bill gave me though an email explaining the cold weather pattern we are stuck in:

No, we won’t be stuck in the 60s. The average high in July will probably be 80 or 81 inland. There’s a lot of cold air in Canada, the Arctic Oscillation has been more negative than positive, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has gone negative. We are going from a weak La Nina to a weak El Nino (which usually puts the trough over the eastern U.S.), the sun is .002% dimmer, we have the Redoubt Volcano in Alaska putting ash up to 65,000 feet…just some of the reasons for what’s going on. Some people are so blinded by the global warming issue that they just can’t figure that it can get cool. You ought to see the CFS (Coupled Forecast System). It’s got us cooler than average through next winter! Of course it was quite wrong for this spring, but it’s scary to look at.

it’s a pretty scary thought of the highest we might get this summer is 80 degrees in july. i agree that if things get too bad and we turn into an all year round cold state i too will be moving south, id rather deal with the hurricanes and humidity.
