Sunday/Monday Freeze
Wow! The high temperatures Sunday at Grand Marais in the U.P. was only 40! It was 51 at Gaylord and 46 at Munising. Muskegon’s high was 61 – that was 11 degrees colder than average with full sun! We have Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories up for 7 states from Pennsylvania to Maine for June 1. Check out these Sunday AM temps: 32 – White Cloud, 30 – Big Rapids, Cadillac and Manistee, 25 – Pellston, 23 – Leota (north of Mt. Pleasant) and also Kenton and Doe Lake in the U.P., 22 Atlanta (northern Lower) and Stonington (U.P.) and 21 at Spincich Lake in the U.P. It’s snowing over Quebec and should snow over the higher elevations of New England tonight. The graphic is May 2009 temperature in Canada relative to average. Look how COLD it’s been!! Churchill, on the west shore of Hudson Bay, has been 9.9 degrees colder than average this month. The last four days have had HIGH temperatures in the mid 20s! There’s a lot of cold air to tap and that’s just one factor that leads me toward a slightly cooler than average summer with very few days that have the combination of +90 heat and +70 dewpoints. I’ve mentioned before that some years in the past with this pattern have brought us an early frost, early snows and extended cold weather in mid-winter. I’m doing the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon on WOTV4 this afternoon. I’ll write again this evening or tonight. Have a nice Sunday!
Good morning everyone!
Just got up a while ago and it says it’s 44 here!
If the summer is in high 70’s low 80’s I can live with that! But hearing that the winter will be longer and colder isn’t good news, for any one!
Maybe not good news for MOST people, but to a few of us, it sounds just fine!
i take it you would like cold & snow all year round? go move to Alaska, lol!
If it was in the high 70’s or low 80’s all year it would be better!
SlimJim
agreed!
Well people, all we can do is pollute the air like a banshee. Global warming is not taking effect nearly enough, we need to burn as many fossil fuels as we can. I burn a large rubber tire every night after dark. I do my part to contribute to the “Greenhouse Effect.”
At the rate we are going Michigan is a lost cause anyways, from the economy to the roads to the weather. I think I am going to head to the Sunshine state, see ya at the beach, I am sick of paying heat bills from September through June.
this cold weather is ridiculous anymore, it’s almost juse for gods sake. i can’t believe im still running my furnace this time of year. i feel bad for the lakes and beaches that are currently and will continue to suffer from this crappy, cold weather. this is what we get for living this close to Canada. the thing i don’t understand is, why isn’t it this cold on the east side of the state? bill you keep saying a “cooler summer” what do you mean by that? are we going to at least make it into the mid 80’s during july-august? i don’t mean to be rude but your the only weather forecaster who says this. i talked to wdiv in detroit and they claim it will be an above average temp summer with more severe weather? maybe it’s time to pick up and move back over there because im sick of cold weather over here!
Does this mean my family coming from California and Texas this summer should bring their coats. Oh, they don’t have any! Off to Goodwill!
Yes they should bring there “winter gear” thats true any year!

I wouldn’t be suprised to see alot subzero days and nights in Jan/Feb this winter, but if its going to be a real cold winter than were not going to have alot of snow…..for us mid state people. Sorry lake effect ones looks like you’ll be spending your winters outside keeping up with the shoveling. Lets enjoy the next 3 or 4 months and not worry about this winter, heck who knows maybe it will be 70 christmas day (1982) and we can go golfing.
As cool as it has been, my flowers are just beautiful compared to previous years. Probably due to a slow warm-up so they don’t bloom all at once. Nice during the day and cool enough to sleep great at night.
well i just checked the accuweather 15 day outlook and i don’t even see one 80 degree day on the map until around mid june. i know this will probably be wrong but man this is really odd for this time of year. i know my apartment complex usually shuts the boilers off for the heat in early may, it is still on as of today. all im hoping for is some nice 80+ degree days and not drop into the 50’s & 60’s anymore for highs. this change in weather has my daughters allergies & asthma going crazy right now!
Yes the next few days (weeks?) still look cool. Just as Bill stated I would guess that for the most part this summer will be on the cool side and I would not be too suprised to see frost in parts of Michigan all summer long. As for next winter its way too early to tell what that beast will bring but as we have been in a cold pattern that may continue.
If I could I would not mind moving to the south but looks like many others I am stuck here for the time being (or longer) So I will complaing about the cold as some others complaing about the “heat” or lack of snow. And I am sure if I lived down south the heat would get to me after a while.

im just wondering how “cool” we will be all summer? i mean if it doesn’t get into the 80’s at all that would be very unusual indeed! i also feel bad for the weather / storm chasers too, doesn’t look like we will get much if any at all this season. what happened to global warming?
looks like detroit is forecasting 80 more than once next week, i wonder why we can’t climb into that too? whats holding us back over here, the lake temps?
bill if you get a chance on your broadcast, please try to explain why we are stuck in this cooler weather pattern. also give us a hint as to how cold you think it may be all summer so people can plan accordingly. my kids want to go to the beach & lake and i keep having to say no because of the temps!
yeah this weather really stinks, i hope it improves soon. if anything the economy needs the $$ from the beaches and such, people just won’t go if it is this cold out.
come to think of it, if the weather keeps going warm, then cold shouldn’t we have more severe weather or am i totally wrong here? my wife and i do like the occasional severe storm or tornado warning to roll through.
MD! http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0898.html
it won’t storm very much at all, the air has been too cold with almost no humidity.
I know. I just wanted to post that .
Raining now at my place with a short gust of wind.
great more fall like shower and wind, yay! …..yes im disgusted!
I don’t know Patti, the idae that a longer, colder winter sounds good to me!
your nuts man!
Bill…What did the weekly update on Lake Michigan say? Do you think if we have enough precip. that good ol’ Lake Michigan will go above its 100+year average?
Bill, one of our family friends knows some friends with beach front property, and he said that last summer they had up to 15′ of beach front, now down to about 5′! So they lost about 10′ from our above average precip. that we’ve had! That just completely amazed me!! What do you think on this?
No real complaints here…only a little fearful of frost in my area..I do have a good portion of my garden planted and flowers out..
I don’t mind not having the high air conditioning bills…or the high heat bills..
65-75 is just fine with me..
Lets make that 75-83 for highs and 60-65 for lows and we would be in the no need area that is no need for heat and no need for air (for most of us) some would have their air on if its near 70° (my next door neighbor has their air on today) and its only 70° with a cool wind.
SlimJim
I know its suggested to run AC if someone in your household has severe allergies..which I can understand the use of AC…otherwise I wouldn’t even consider using it…fans provide enough cool air if my home gets too warm…which it hasn’t yet..
michigan= 9 months of winter and 3 months of bad ice fishing
frost on every thing sunday morning in eastern muskegon county
I was up at Taq. Falls Sunday. Very cold–50 degrees with sun.
