Snow in June???

June 7th, 2009 at 2:57 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

dixsnow <–click twice to enlarge.  I continue to be impressed with the cold air across much of the northern U.S. from the Great Lakes to the Rockies. Up to two inches of snow fell in Dickinson, N.D. on Saturday. It was the first time Dickinson had seen a snowflake in June in more than 60 years. The high temperature there Saturday was 31 degrees colder than average. Three inches of snow fell in Hebron, N.D. Sunburst, MT had 5″ of new snow, with 3″ at Basin and in Teton Co. Snow also fell in Helena and Great Falls, Montana. Bismarck, ND had a high temp. of 43° on Saturday. They had never had a June 6 that failed to get into the 50s before. International Falls, MN set three record low temperatures in the first six days of June with the low of 27° Saturday morning being the coldest so late in the year. Mosinee, Wisconsin had a high of 48° on Saturday. Milwaukee had a high of 54°. Here in Michigan, Traverse City had a high of only 55° and Ludington was only 57°. Pellston had a low of 29°. Marquette tied a daily record with 32°. At mid-afternoon the mid-Lake Michigan bouy west of Holland was reading an air temperature of only 45°.  Up at Churchill, Manitoba they have now had below average temperatures on 44 of the last 46 days.  May was 10°  cooler than average and so far June has been 8° cooler than average.  They have yet to top 40° in 2009.  Highs should average in the upper 40s right now.  Sunday update:  High temps. on Sunday:  Grand Rapids 75°, Entrican (next county northeast of G.R. 64°, Big Rapids (about an hour north of G.R.) 57°.  Other highs on Sunday:  53° at Rochester, MN, 45° at Dickinson, ND, and 45° at Riverton, WY – which was 33° cooler than average.

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Bob, this would be great in Jaunary! LOL

    Bill, you are impressed???? I am depressed… :o )

  3. Daniel (Denver, CO) says:

We haven’t even broke the 80 degree mark for June yet, which is very odd. I wonder if our climate is changing quicker than we think or if this is just an anomaly?

  4. no snow in june! says:

yeah i see the snow on the map and i pray we are not going to get it here, are we?

  5. no snow in june! says:

seems funny to me that the weather forecast temps keep changing by the day.

  6. missing summer says:

My husband noted earlier this year that solar flare activity has been down to nothing and it would make for a cool summer. This would be a proof that he wasn’t spouting random trivia if true.

  7. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

The first week in June has been very cold all across the Great Lakes area! And one has to wonder if the GR station is showing a “heat” bias. Because so far in June GR is running at -4.8 below average but around the great lakes area Flint is running at -6.3, Detroit in at -6.2, Milwaukee is at -7.0. off to our north Traverse City is at -8.3, Marquette is at -8.0 and the Soo is at -6.2. So yes the first week of June 2009 has been Cold.

    1. Rob Dale says:

MKG is -4.6, LAN is -4.8, SBN -4.3, FWA -5.3… Doesn’t sound like a GRR bias to me, but par for the course in our area.

      1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Its still been well below average.
        SlimJim

        1. Rob Dale says:

I guess I’m not sure I understand what you mean by a “heat bias” at GRR?

  8. Matty says:

    Global warming my foot.

  9. Steve says:

First off, it’s not even Summer yet. I’m not sure why some people keep referring to this time of year as such. We’re only a week into June. I don’t have any data on hand, but I’m sure there have been plenty of times in the past where we didn’t hit the 80 degree mark by now.

Second, QUIT CALLING THIS WEATHER COLD! Cooler than average would be a better description. December is cold. Daily highs in the seventies is not cold.

I’m sure we’ll get plenty of hot weather in the coming months for those who enjoy having to peel themselves off of their car seats, not being able to sleep at night, and sweating their butts off after being outside for only a couple of seconds. For now, I’m cherishing this comfortable weather and I’m sure many others are, too. :)

    1. Rob Dale says:

Actually for the purpose of weather dicussions — it is officially considered “summer”… June 1 is the first day of the season.

    2. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

For June it has been COLD!!! Any time of the year when you are running more then -4 below the long term average it is well below average! If it was more the +4 for a ten day period we would be complaining how “hot” it was. And in December or January how unusually warm it was.
      SlimJim

    3. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

BTW the last time we went a week into June with out gettting to 80° was 2003.
      SlimJim

      1. fixxxer says:

yeah that one one cold summer, was in the 70’s low 80’s most times, even the 60’s. of course that summer we did get some awesum severe weather too! i remember that year well because myself and my whole family got food poisoning in june from burger king!

it isn’t summer until june 21st and ive seen the long range forecasts and their calling for the mid 80’s by late june. im sure we will have a half way decent summer, just no heat waves this year. as long as i don’t see any low 60’s or 50’s or snow this summer ill stick around. the first snow flake i see in july im moving my family south!

        1. michael g (SE GR) says:

It is not astronomical summer until June 21. Meteorological summer, typically the warmest three month period of the year, runs from June 1 to August 31.

So far you’ve threatened to move south about 50 times on this blog and haven’t followed through. If you’re really that miserable here you SHOULD round up the family and hit the road.

        2. Rob Dale says:

If you want to look at your calendar and say it’s not summer per astronomers, that’s fine. But in the weather world – June 1 is the start of summer.

  10. Steve says:

One more thing, does someone have to mention Global Warming in EVERY single blog post Bill makes on here? That’s so annoying to see that whenever there are warmer than normal temperatures in the Winter and cooler than normal temperatures this time of the year. I swear, some of you seem to be obsessed with that term and Al Gore.

  11. Marti B. (Grandville) says:

Not around here please! Somewhere our family has a picture my mom and dad kept for many years. May 15, cannot recall the year, they took a picture of a very snowy backyard with snow piled high on our backyard picnic table. She had written the date on the back of the picture, and I think my sister has it……..only problem being, sister lives in Detroit and pictures are buried among thousands of others in a big chest. One of these days……..

  12. Al Gore's Dad says:

Leave my boy outta this. He is a money making machine!!

  13. Craig H (Holly Rec Area) says:

Lovin these Spring temps. Making up for all the years, recently, that we went from Winter to Summer!

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Its been just like a good warm July in the UP!
      SlimJim

      1. Tyler says:

Slim Jim it’s always winter in the U.P. year round. This can be considered a heat wave right now for the U.P. Your right this is a good day in July around here. The U.P. is just like Alaska maybe even worse. It’s always way warmer down in Wisconsin and downstate and they get long hot summers down there and winters are basically like our so called summers in the U.P. Im dying to go south right now to even Green bay, Milwaukee or downstate for some summer weather.

        1. boman says:

Id say that’s a bit of a stretch Ty. You’re in Escanaba if I remember right?

  14. fixxxer says:

i think we are just having a belated, long spring. summer temps will get here soon enough, just not heat waves from what im gathering!

  15. fixxxer says:

i just checked the accuweather 16 day forecast and their calling for temps to rebound into the mid to upper 80’s with strong storms in the next weeks. i hope this stand true and i need that heat already!

    http://www.accuweather.com/us/mi/grand%20rapids/49509/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&zipChg=1&metric=0

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Accuweather’s long range (15 day) guess will change from day to day heck tomorrow 15 day guess may have highs in the 60’s where today’s it in the upper 80’s. so do not plan on their forcast (even short range)
      SlimJim

  16. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

I beleive that it will warm up this summer and we will see many days in the 80’s and maybe some in the 90’s (what we average 10/12). But I am rubbing it in because there will be a winter when we are running well above average and the snow lovers will be crying all the time!
Its not too bad of a day here with the temps in the upper 70’s but its still COLD off to the north of here with temps still in the 50’s in the UP.
    SlimJim

    1. Tyler says:

Yeah it’s been really warm in Milwaukee and Chicago as well lately. It was in the 80’s there. I talked to a friend from GR and he said it has been really warm down there about 80 yesterday and in the upper 70’s today. I think Im coming down there.

  17. Tyler says:

People in the U.P. are heading to Florida, Texas and all over down south to escape the cold weather right now. I think thats why there are so few people cause the weather is so bad. I always thought Arizona would be a nice place to move too cause they get the dry heat and not the heat and humidity combined like Florida but hey I like the heat either way. I remember In Miami how you would have to ring your shirt out from all the sweat every few hours even in 80 degree weather cause the humidity made it feel like 90. 115 in Arizona is hot but not bad because it is a dry heat.

  18. Howard says:

I have been wondering, with all the cold weather up in Northern Canada, how long they were able to run the ice road this year? Bill can you find out if possible?

    Thanks,
    Howard

  19. Mis says:

Let it snow here! I’d be more than happy. I’ll take snow over 90 any day!

    1. scott (west olive) says:

I 2nd that, but just to keep the masses happy I’ll settle with thunder snow.

      1. crazy people says:

im sorry, no offense but you guys are nuts! if you want cold & snow all year go move to alaska or the arctic. i can’t see the fun of being stuck in the house and being sick all the time when it’s cold out. west michigans winter was bad enough, it’s time for summer and some heat, deal with it!

        1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

When you look at it, we have either cold, cloudy, cold rain, cold wind or snow 9 or more months of the year and still some complain of the 20 to 25 warm days we might get a year (I call a warm day a day of 85° or better)
          SlimJim

  20. Sherry (Comstock Park) says:

    It must be global warming. :}}

  21. INDYDOG says:

TEMPS CAN STAY LIKE THIS ALL SUMMER LONG …… I SPEND A LOT OF TIME OUTSIDE U GET UNDER THAT JUNE SUN IT’S HOT! ‘SAVE ENGERY’ BEST START TO SUMMER IN YEARS!!! MY DOG IS IN LOVE WITH THIS WEATHER……

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Yes it been nice in the sun, I also spend a lot of time our side but its at night and its a shame when a coat is still needed in June!
      SlimJim

      1. INDYDOG says:

        START A NICE FIRER!

  22. Jimmy James says:

One of my kids from the Denver area sent me a picture of the tornado than went just to the north of them. Another one of my kids from Ft. Collins sent me pictures of all the hail they had. Lots of damage. I hope we don’t see any of that kind of weather around here this summer.

  23. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

one more jab as to how cold it has been:

Statement as of 7:30 PM CDT on June 7, 2009

… Record cold maximum temperatures across northeast Wisconsin…

city todays high coldest maximum temperature/year

The cold front has gone thru here and the temp is now down to 54°

  24. Michael E says:

    Meteorological Summer: June 1
    Meteorological Fall: Sep 1
    Meteorological Winter: Dec 1
    Meteorological Spring: Mar 1

  25. Tyler says:

If you want cold and snow all year round all you guys have to do is move to the U.P. or Alaska. North Dakota is another suggestion too since it snowed there today.

    1. fixxxer says:

amen brother! i hate this weather we have been having, it’s summer and i want some heat and storms, not rain and cold. no wonder most people i know have gone to florida for the summer.

  26. Chris says:

    So much for Global Warming!

    1. fixxxer says:

yup, why the heck do they keep updating the forecast? now it says 60’s for highs tomorrow and wednesday? will this ever end? how many times a day can you change the darn weather outlook.

  27. Rob Dale says:

Mine said 60’s for the past two days – if you’re talking about other sources, they should update when they get better information in. If you forecast 75, then see plenty of signs that it will be only 65, shouldn’t you WANT to update the product?

    1. fixxxer says:

im still waiting to get into the high 70’s ans 80’s for gods sake. will it ever happen? i have my doubts as it’s cold out once again now.

  28. fixxxer says:

this si what we get for living to close to canada and that darn lake!
