This is a picture taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station on June 12 (2009). Click here to supersize. This is the Sarychev Volcano in northeast Russia, north of Japan. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in the area. This is the 6th time the volcano has exploded since WWII. This is a very cloudy area and it’s unusual to be able to see down to the volcano. The clearing was likely caused by the volcano itself either from sinking motion around the plume or a “shockwave” from the eruption. The plume of ash/steam from the volcano has reached an altitude where the top is condensing into a white cloud. Read more here.
