Hottest Day of the Year!

June 24th, 2009 at 8:58 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather
Wednesday could have been the hottest day of the summer!! High Temperatures Weds. PM:  96 Grand Rapids (tied a record high for the date)  and Kalamazoo…95 at Battle Creek, Fremont, Mendon, Coldwater and Cadillac.  Belding and Albion checked in with 94.  It made 93 in Lansing, Jackson, Mt. Pleasant and Tulip City Airport in Holland and 92 in Sparta, Clarksville and the Muskegon Co. Airport.  Unofficial thermometers registered 99 at Greenville and Jenison and 98 in Ionia (baking those flooded cars from the B-93 Bash).  Up north:  97 Mio, 96 Grayling, 95 Traverse City and Gaylord…and a more comfortable 82 on Mackinac Is. and 73 at Grand Marais.  This is our warmest since we mad 97-96 on 7/31 and 8/1/07.  Interesting:  This is only the 4th time since 1953 that we have set or tied a record high temperature in June.  That’s 56 years…AND this is only the 4th time the thermometer has hit 95 since 1999. We made 100+ six days in a row in 1936!  We are getting fewer, not more +95 days in the Midwest than we got in the early 20th century. Check out the webcam from the Spyglass Condos in Holland and you can see how brown the water is coming out of Lake Macatawa (well, you could really see it well this AM – sun angle in PM makes it more difficult to see).  The high temperature at the Muskegon pier today was 79.4.  The high temperature at the lighthouse at S. Haven was 77.5 at 8 AM!!  The high temperature at Spyglass in Holland was 78 at 12:24 AM!!  At the mid-Lake Michigan buoy, the high was 73 and the water temperature warmed from 64 to 71!  That warm layer is VERY shallow and the next time we get a wind, it’ll stir up the water and it’ll drop (maybe back into the 50s).  The sun, warm air and light winds (so the water is hanging still at the beaches) has boosted the beach water temperatures up into the low 70s.     Some BIG T-Storms (heavy rain producers and small hail on the South and West Sides of Chicago – radar estimated up to 4.7″ – local flooding) formed on the edge of the lake breeze in Chicago this afternoon.  They had 2 injuries when straight-line winds tore part of the roof off St. Laurence High School and also flipped a dugout at the ball field.  You can check out the visible satellite loop (daytime), current Michigan weather observations, the latest Grand Rapids NWS discussion, Grand Rapids NWS radar, Great Lakes radar, national radar.  The chance of rain increases tonight  (mainly after 3 AM) and for Thursday AM – hopefully (cross your fingers) stopping just in time for  Maranda’s second Park Party at Fifth Third Park in Comstock Park, but that’s VERY iffy.    We stopped at 89 Tuesday officially in G.R.   We usually hit 90 twice in June and 9-10 times during the summer.  We only hit 90 three times last summer.   We’re going to get back in NW flow early next week and that will drop temps. back into the low-mid 70s.

My plants were bone dry. Amazing how quickly heat can dry them up.

I did not make it without putting the a/c in. My son woke up drenched in sweat last night and none of the kids have been sleeping well. And when the kids sleep well, mommy and daddy sleep well. :)

  2. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

I must be living on a “heat island” as I made it up to 91° here today. Its nice that it made it only to 89° at the airport but most of us do not live at the airport!
Still a nice and warm 76° here at 11:15

Make sure your thermometer is 6ft off the ground and in a box with slats for the wind to get through but not the sunshine.

  3. Tyler says:

71 here at 12:02 A.M. just west of Escanaba in the U.P. It made 91 today at my house. 93 in Iron Mountain and 93 in Green Bay Wisconsin.

  4. Tyler says:

Also it was very nice radio conditions of the FM Dial. I was picking up Big Rapids, TC and GR stations clear as a bell. One of them from GR was thunder country 94.5 and radio x 96.1. It was pretty awesome to hear downstate stations as if they were local. Inversion conditions tonight.

  5. Herb (Southeast Muskegon Township) says:

A week or so ago driving back from Manistee, at 3 AM, we could pick up clear as day a country station in Traverse City.

If you turn your radio dial to AM 650, say after 10 PM you can pick WSM 650 from good ole Nashville Tennessee.

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Years ago on the AM dial when there were still 50,000 watt “clear channel” stations. Note the channels were really clear channels not just in name. Anyway you could pick radio stations all across the eastern part of the country at night!

      1. After Hurricane Katrina, I was driving from GR to Lansing late at night and scanning the AM, and I heard these odd public service announcements about getting food clothing and shelter and insurance information – after listening some more the news came on, and I discovered I was listening to a station out of Louisiana! That was crazy!

        1. Becca says:

I heard that same Louisiana station driving near Lansing one night back in October!

Bill when do you think we wil see snow this year??

    1. Rob Dale says:

I think we’ll see some in December. Probably November, maybe even October? What do you think?

      1. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

        mmmmmm snow.., now would good

  7. Mike Geukes says:

Snow sometimes occur in October, I would say you best bet would be in November.

reach 80 degrees or higher. Gotta love evapotranspiration from corn.

A nice and warm 75° with sun this AM. I will be getting ready to take my walk in the AM for a change. Also I am adding what I wrote above on what some where talking about on getting radio reception at night. All of us “old” should folks should remember back when we could pick up many of the 50,000 watt AM stations form Chicago, Boston, New York, Nashville, New Orleans,Charleston WV anyone remember any others?

Years ago on the AM dial when there were still 50,000 watt “clear channel” stations. Note the channels were really clear channels not just in name. Anyway you could pick radio stations all across the eastern part of the country at night!

about as good as it gets….LOL
60 in copper harbor 93 in bellaire, pretty good temp differntial in the state!

Lovin’ this weather Bill!!! Been waiting a loooonnnng time for summer…would rather water the flowers than shovel snow any day.

  12. Lynne-Little Whitefish Lake says:

    Slim Jim -
Way back in the late 70’s we used to be able to pick up an AM station out of Chicago on Sunday nights about 11 p.m. and they had all the old radio programs like the Green Hornet and radio theater. We used to nap on Sunday afternoons and stay up till 2 or 3 a.m. listening to them.

We hit 91 up here in Pierson and we are on the lake. Nice on shore breeze for our side of the lake and the occasional clouds made it fair tolerable. Today it is very humid and already up to 78. Going to be a warm one.

  13. storms getting togeather out west moveing east!

    1. Rob Dale says:

Not sure what radar you are looking at – but if you see anything within several hundred miles of Michigan in the form of a “storm” it’s just ground clutter or AP. No storms are moving in today. One could “pop up” but certainly nothing organized.

      1. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Hey Rob, hows the new job?
I see some t-storms from a lake breeze in chicago, but as you said, none organized…but I would like a good shower about now!

  14. Bill Olson says:

We made 90 here in TC yesterday… YES!!!!! Pushin that ice cream out the door!!!!

  15. Sarah (in Martin) says:

Looks like we just hit 90*. It isnt even the hottest hour of the day. Im thinking we are going to blow right by our foretasted temp. Heat Index of 97*.

  16. J says:

PLEASE remind people to check on family, friends and neighbors with this heat. The elderly and small children are most vulnerable in the heat..make sure to drink plenty of water and if you dont have air conditioning try to stay in a shady place where there is a breeze or go to the library, shopping or somewhere there is cool air. PLEASE help keep everyone safe!

    1. Sarah (in Martin) says:

Agreed. I just called my neighbors (who are in their 70’s and do not have a/c) to make sure they were OK and to make sure they knew they can come over at anytime.

  17. Dan says:

WOW! Its hot! Heat indicies approaching 100, right?
Make sure you take it easy if you are going out for long period of time.

  18. Larry of Hastings/Barry Co. says:

Bill, off the subject alittle. My wife and I are starting to look at houses, I am looking at solar system also. What I want to know, is there any websites that will tell me if Michigan would be a good place to have solar system(amount of sun light average ,etc). The bottom line, would it be worth the extra cost to save some on my power bill, etc. I am not 100% sure about wind and solar systems, will it really save us money in the long run?

    1. Jacob says:

      LARRY OF HASTINGS:
Check out this website. It is definately cost effective in the long haul. You sell excess energy produced back to the power company or you can ‘live off the grid’ so to speak if you are in rural Barry County.

  19. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

On a weather subject there is a big thunder storm in the Chicago area, and in my little “heat Island” on the NW side of GR I am now up to 96° so by far the warmest day of 2009 so far.
    SlimJim

  20. General-Gouda (Grand Haven) says:

The radar signal from those Chicago storms are showing some sort of wave of energy flowing outward from Chicago going West and South! Perhaps some strong winds picking up debris?

  21. Rob Dale says:

No, it’s the low level outflow winds.

There isn’t much wind at any levels, so the storm forms, drops out, winds gust and spread out, and they form a new storm. It’s not a wave or energy or debris, just wind.

  22. I have not been on here in a while. I think I’ll be here more often now. City of Chicago under Flash Flood Warning

  23. Trained spotter reported this in Chicago: 2 TO 3 INCHES OF WATER ON SHOUDLER OF SOUTH BOUND LANE ON INTERSTATE 294 NEAR TOUHY

    1. Rob Dale says:

That activity is of no concern to Michigan…

  24. fixxxer says:

im not liking that 72 degree temp i see for monday, although everybody else is saying about 77-79 for a high. lets not get back to that cold crap we had for 2 months.

    1. In my opinion, it’s better than mid-90s

      1. Steve (Kalamazoo Township) says:

I agree. Fixxer, go outside and enjoy this miserable weather and quit yapping about cooler temperatures.

        1. 8-day has an even 70! maybe i’ve changed my mind

      2. fixxxer says:

72 is pretty cold to do anything on the 4th of july, i wanted to go to the beach with the kids, another holiday ruined. i don’t think it will get that cold out, i say the mid-high 70’s. the way the weather changes on woodtv it could say the 90’s again by the end of this week. gotta think, july/august are the hottest months so i doubt were done with the heat. so much for that “cooler” summer bill forecasted!

        1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

One or two hot days dose not make a hot summer. (See 1992)
          SlimJim

  25. what does everyone think about tomorrow’s storms?

    1. BILL GET A STORM BLOG GOING?????????????

    2. fixxxer says:

if a stronger cold front comes through i say we might actually have a good chance at some mighty severe weather. im still very skeptical though.

      1. Rob Dale says:

There is no “strong” cold front coming through.

        1. fixxxer says:

i didn’t say there was one coming, if it cools in the 70’s id call that a pretty BIG cold front, wouldn’t you? i still think the forecast will change and we will be in the high 70’s low 80’s and im fine with that.

  26. Dan says:

Yes, really, what strong cold front? NWS out of GR says short waves. I’m not hearing anything about a cold front until Saturday night. it appears that this warmth will last a few more days maybe not 90 but in the mid 80s.

    1. spc only has a 15%..which usually means nothing anyway

  27. Steve (Kalamazoo Township) says:

The storms can take another week off as far as I’m concerned. I’m not particularly looking forward to going another half-day without power again and I know a lot of the people in some of the areas dealing with flooding would like a break.

  28. Terri L Smith says:

Bill, we downloaded WOODTV8 WeatherBug and today it said today’s High was 102 degrees but you said on the 10 o’clock news it was a high of 96 degrees. was it really 102 here today?

    1. Rob Dale says:

It was not 102 degrees at any official reporting station in the state today.

      1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

The word there is “official” while my readings are not “official” (I have two) I did record a “unofficial” high of 100.7° and 99.5° respectfully yesterday. Remember the colder and hotter the temps are the more variable they become so just because it was only 96° at the airport dose NOT mean it was not 100 or 92 a mile or less away for the “official” site.
        SlimJim

  29. Lynn Snelling says:

Bill said, “This is only the 4th time since 1953 that we have set or tied a record high temperature in June. That’s 56 years…AND this is only the 4th time the thermometer has hit 95 since 1999. We made 100+ six days in a row in 1936! We are getting fewer, not more +95 days in the Midwest than we got in the early 20th century.”

How does this trend indicate global warming? Bill, what do you think about global warming?

    1. fixxxer says:

part of global warming is getting cold, not heating up. that’s why they are in the process of changing the name. michigan will become an all year round cold state.
