We missed the severe weather Saturday Night

June 26th, 2009 at 10:22 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

1730 UTC Day 1 Outlook    Lots of Wind Damage in NW Illinois.  Here’s regional radar, local radar, local lightning, Now, check out this video from a severe t-storm in St. Clair Shores Thursday afternoon and if you haven’t seen it yet, this video from 6/19 at Holland St. Park.  This is the current severe weather outlook for Day 1 (map will always update).  Here’s the GRR  discussion.   The pattern looks cool this week, near normal next week and maybe warmer than normal the week after that.   I had a good time in Muskegon at the Summerfest Parade on 6/27…then I went down to see daughter #3 at Port Sheldon…then home…got the front grass cut…a got a little sunburn…you’ll see that on Monday.  Final note:  I bought gas at $2.52 in Grand Haven…saw it for $2.47 in Allendale…still $2.71 on Alpine.  It’s as high as $2.39 in Lapeer to $2.89 in Cheboygan.  They’ll probably jack it up right before everyone starts travelling this weekend.  Then it’l likely go down after that, perhaps below $2.50 again before we start up again.

  2. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Tornado warning just like 7 miles north of me. Huge winds right now

    1. fixxxer says:

lucky u, looks like detroit will get the worst. its sunny and hot here in wyoming, i don’t see anymore storms on the map by gr so i think this will be another dud. saturday might get interesting when the cold front comes through.

      1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

It was an awesome storm. Huge hail too and pretty severe winds. Got pretty scary there for a minute or two! We might get hit again too it looks like…

  3. sunny and hot on the north end travis your lucky enjoy!

    1. fixxxer says:

it’s too dry to storm right now, the front wont come through until late saturday night. at least the lake is warm now so any storms that cross it actually have a chance this time. id like to see those suckers training in again!

  5. Rain Barrel says:

I bought 3 rain barrels from Go Green Step on the North Side of Holland and did not get water in the house like my neighbors. Not sure if the 160 + gallons of water collected did it, but was sure happy. I may get more. The gardens love the water. He’s up on Ottawa Beach Rd next to Mobil.

  6. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Pinball sized hail coming down now

    1. Pinball size? LOL. Is that a large marble? Or are you getting pingpong ball size?

      1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

haha a notch or two above pea-sized hail on my official hail scale is pinball-sized… haha

Hopefully, my car is okay. Sounded very hard against the windows and our roof.

        1. Ah, gotcha. That sounds pretty significant! Hope your car is okay.

  7. last loop i saw little blips across the lk !

    1. i’m kidna seeing that east of milwaukee along the lakeshore

  8. maybe the mid lk 2! the next few hours maybe good !!!!!!!

    1. i’m not seeing mid-lake

  9. bill maybe storms are trying to pop just west of us!

  10. fixxxer says:

    another FAIL today!

    1. there’s still time

    2. Do you even read the blog? Go back and read about the Lake Shadow that would cause the weather to develop to the east, and east it went, and they did have significant weather. There is still weather popping up in southeast Wisconsin, but I am thinking that is heading for southern tier and Indiana.

  11. There’s one wave of clouds over the lake that might do something when it hits land.. but it looks pretty ragged.. The lake is taking a toll on it

    http://weather.cod.edu/analysis/loops/satmaster.pl?Michigan

    1. fixxxer says:

i hate that damn lake, causes nothing but headaches, cold weather, too much lake effect snow and kills the severe storms. drain that sucker already!

      1. not with what happened friday night!

        1. fixxxer says:

#1 they werent that severe, mostly a rain event.

#2 most of us here in wyoming & gr got nothing but a little rain and lightning, i hardly call that severe.

        2. Not that severe? 3 Tornados!!

        3. You always act like if there is a Tornado Watch, every city and county in the Watch should experience a tornado. Okay, no more comments about this – you are just fishing for your all-wanted attention again.

        4. fixxxer says:

do you listen or read before you type? im not talking about holland or west, im talking about gr & wyoming.

        5. river side park had a tree down plus many branches down!!!!!! whats that a slap on the hand only ……plus my power was out!!!!!

      2. In the defense of the other party.. The lake keeps us warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, protects us from the worst storms, and gives us lots of snow that we love =)

Ok off my nice wagon now and back to agreeing with fixxxer… That lake ruins it for storm lovers here on the west side more often than not… there has to be a way we can heat it up somehow?? Something.. draining it would be catastrophic..

        1. i say the lake’s fine to me the way it is now

        2. fixxxer says:

maybe you love the snow but alot of us hate it.

  12. southeastern calhoun county cell looks somewhat interesting

    1. somewhat is the key word

      1. fixxxer says:

there is nothing really west of us, i doubt it’s gonna storm tonight.

  13. we need storms 2 firer up from madson to greenbay nothing really going on over there!

  14. special weather statement on storms cancelled

    1. fixxxer says:

i could of saw that coming, the air is too hot and dry, doesn’t feel humid today, just plain hott.

  16. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DETROIT/PONTIAC HAS ISSUED A

    * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR…
    OAKLAND COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN…

    * UNTIL 415 PM EDT

    1. fixxxer says:

not to be funny but you don’t have to post warnings on here for the other side of the state. i think were safe today ;)

      1. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

this blog is not all about Mr negative whinner Fixxer, people from all over the state have been on here to discuss weather, untill you showed up, I noticed a lot of regulars have disappeared, because you always have a something negative to say about everything.

  17. Don’t necessarily look for lines of storms – the one that hit Lansing developed right over the city.

    1. fixxxer says:

we shall see but i feel a FAIL coming again!

    2. lasning reporting light rain now

      1. Quite sunny and hot 2 miles north of Lansing!

  18. Dew point just rose to 72. Temp rose to 88. Humidity rose to 57%. Heat index is 94. I am not giving up hope unless dew points drop. That is VERY juicy still for pop-ups.

    1. fixxxer says:

57 humidity isn’t very juicy to be honest, i just heard the air isn’t prime over here and were capped right now from anything developing. the national weather service didn’t need to issue this watch again, when will they learn?

      1. Think of the dew point as a shoe size. The bigger the number, the more moisture is floating in the air. The dew point is useful in figuring out how comfortable we are and for forecasting thunderstorms, nighttime low temperatures, and the formation of dew, frost, and fog.

  19. that dieing out thunderstorm north of us is puting a cap on gr till the south!

  20. fixxxer says:

according to kyle there is a cap that’s preventing severe weather over here today, told you guys.

    1. How about when/if the cap breaks? =)

      1. to the best of my knowledge, there was cap over us on last thursday evening

  21. all eyes on kzoo area!!!!!!!

    1. east of kzoo

    2. LOCATIONS IN THE PATH OF THESE STORMS INCLUDE…

      SCHOOLCRAFT… MARSHALL… ALBION…
      JACKSON… CONCORD… TEKONSHA…
      BROOKLYN…

      not kalamazoo

  22. western jackson county cell sind of seems to be getting stronger

  23. the front line whatever u want to call is thru gr …..the temp has gone down a little so has the dewpoint!

    1. fixxxer says:

yeah i just noticed a temp drop where i am too. windy out too.

  24. lots of warning lining up….just east of us

  25. well that was fun well it lasted back 2 work now ….maybe sat night?????

    1. if nothing happened today, i don’t think anything will happen on saturday

      1. fixxxer says:

        exactly!

  26. Watch activity to continue south and east of Kalamazoo to Alma line.

  27. Peak heating is 4-5PM by the way.

We’ll see what happens in the next 2-3 hours.

    1. i hate to say i disagree with you, chuck

      1. With peak the peak heating? Or the next 2-3 hours?

I doubt anything happens, but I was just stating a fact.

        1. Hmm didn’t mean to type peak twice..

  28. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Second line of severe storms! More hail right now but only pea-sized at the moment.

  29. look at x-treme northeastern osceola county

    1. hey ben come on over and watch the line of storms that will come thru from my backyard sat night!!!!!!!

  30. Moisture leaving the area – it’s 90 here now, but dewpoint dropped 4 degrees down to 68 and humidity down to 47. Would expect the dewpoint to hold or climb for more action. Think things are winding down for me.

  31. back from my work hey look just west of gr otw, musk countys pop ups trying 2 form?????

    1. fixxxer says:

sorry indy, not gonna happen today, the watch will expire soon as usual. what a dud of a summer so far, i can’t believe it.

  32. fixxxer says:

off topic but is anybody else disgusted by the cooler temps by the 4th of july? kinda ruins going to the lake for the day.

    1. new line forming in south west wisc……

    2. just start a firer work and keep warm fix!!!!

      1. fixxxer says:

why should we have to start a fire to keep warm in july? i want to take my kids to the beach and go swimming & fishing, not bundle up in coats. seems the heat is only here during the work week and who can enjoy that when your at work all darn day.

        1. never trust a 8 day forcast my man!!!!!!!!!

  33. It looks like something is trying without much luck just moving into Newaygo Co. now. because there was a brief sprinkle out of that batch in Oceana Co.

    1. fixxxer says:

night all, wake me up when it actually storms out, oh wait i forgot where i live :(

  34. THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 510
    CONTINUES.

NUMEROUS OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES HAVE ALLOWED CONVECTION TO REDEVELOP
OVER MUCH OF MI AS STRONG HEATING CONTINUES TO DESTABILIZE THE
ATMOSPHERE…EVEN FOLLOWING PREVIOUS CONVECTION. LAKE BREEZE IN WRN
MI HAS MOVED VERY FAR INLAND…JUST WEST OF KLAN AND EXTENDING SWWD
INTO SBN AND MAY PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FOCUS FOR REDEVELOPMENT. STORMS
MAY EVENTUALLY PROGRESS EWD/SEWD INTO MODERATE INSTABILITY. IN
OH…SURFACE CONVERGENCE HAS BEEN REINFORCED ALONG AN AREA OF
SURFACE CONFLUENCE AND A LAKE BREEZE MOVING SWD FROM LAKE ERIE.
OUTFLOW SURGING NWD FROM THESE STORMS MAY INITIATE NEW CONVECTION AS
    MODERATE INSTABILITY EXISTS.

  35. watch out ceader point!!!!!!!!good time 2 be on a coster!!!!

  36. I can see the overshooting tops from the hailstorms back building to the SE of me .. way up here in Kent City

  37. Marshall says:

What a bummer about the weather today. I made sure I got all the mowing done hoping it was going to rain, oh well. There’s always “Saturday” (yawn).

  38. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

Bill…I am just now saying this because I just got my internet back, I do agree with you that I would of also issued some type of watch for the system that gave us all that rain, but the SPC said the area was too small to issue anything, and then that next day I saw a tornado watch in Kansas that was as small if not smaller than our area! Did you notice that as well?

So I am saying that was that was not a vert good call by the SPC!

    1. Rob Dale says:

SPC doesn’t issue watches for getting lots of rain, so I’m not sure exactly what sort of concern you are referring to? More details?

  39. Dan says:

What are the chances that the storms hit the GR area tonight into tomorrow? I’d give them about 50% chance. We have had quite the rainfall over the past couple of weeks. I’m hoping the cool spell is VERY short lived! Bring back the heat!

  40. Dan says:

The Lakes are what make Michigan such a unique State! I hope they NEVER drain the Lake, especially Lake Michigan. I’m in agreement with Charles. It does have a HUGE influence on our weather.

    1. i am in agreement as well

      1. fixxxer says:

that lake is nothing but a pain in the behind, cools the air down, kills storms and gives us too much snow, drain the sucker i say!

  41. A COLD FRONT MOVING MOVING THROUGH THE AREA LATE TONIGHT WILL
BRING SOME THUNDERSTORMS. THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE THAT ONE OF THE
STORMS NEAR OR WEST OF KALAMAZOO COULD PRODUCE A TORNADO.
OTHERWISE…BRIEF HEAVY RAIN AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING WILL BE THE
MAIN THREATS…PRIMARILY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 96. STORMS ARE EXPECTED
TO MOVE EAST AROUND 30 MPH.

    that’s today’s hazardous weather outlook!!!!!!!!!!

    1. fixxxer says:

there won’t be any severe weather or a tornado ben!

  42. Ben Holcomb says:

I’m having a hard time getting excited about storms today. I just can’t see anything until really late.

  43. Me too Ben, and I have my doubts about any storms late too. Thunder, lightning, and rain is all I can see for us tonight.

    1. fixxxer says:

there will be nothing but showers and a few rumbles of thunder tonight, not as hot today and it’s cloudy out already, humidity is down too today.

good news is that i see another warm up will be coming by the 4th! summer isn’t over quite yet guys!

      1. eeeeeee says:

        RAIN ON ME

  44. Steve (Kalamazoo Township) says:

That’s fine by me. I like to have power…

  45. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

There is a small line of rain showers developing in Wisconsin, nothing close to severe but we could see a shower or thunder shower later tonight.
Actually we could get some good storms on Monday/Tuesday. And I would not be too surprised to see that happen. I would look for heavy rain/hail and maybe some good thunder.
    SlimJim

    1. With the cooler air pool aloft and if we get enough sunshine some of the stronger updrafts could very well produce some small hail and generate some wind. If indeed the storms that develop are in “pop up” form, we would be treated to some nice cloudscapes as well. Great for photos which I intend to get.

Wouldn’t be all too surprised if we get enough sun, to see us put under a minor ’see text’. We’ll see though. Let’s hope for the best

    2. Rob Dale says:

With temps struggling to break 70, there won’t be anything major coming out way.

  46. I’ve seen sun all day

  47. KVH says:

line forming in wisconsin, will the lake kill it?

    1. Rob Dale says:

The northern end of the line is right on the southern end of the lake, so I can’t see that having an impact.

  48. Dan says:

How about the line that is forming to the west of the Chicago? It looks like this line could be decent if it holds together and makes it across the lake. We are talking at least 5 hours from now if it happens! It doesn’t look like the dynamics will be right for the storms on Monday and Tuesday. It’ll be too cool and dewpoints will not be right.

    1. Rob Dale says:

It’s moving south of east, so no chance of impacting GRR area.

  49. ryan says:

Bill do you think the storms will have alot of ligning??

    1. Rob Dale says:

There hasn’t been much lightning across Wisconsin, so I wouldn’t expect much by the time they get here either.

  50. A whole lot of boring coming into MI, maybe some sprinkles and light showers but that’s it. Didn’t expect much tonight.. wait for Monday/Tuesday we might have a few t-storms mixed in with the showers, but nothing real significant.

Does anyone know where we can get an up to the minute accurate lightning tracker online for free? I am still looking..

    1. Rob Dale says:

It’d be illegal to have realtime lightning for free… Cheapest option I know of is http://nexrad.allisonhouse.com which adds it to GRLevelX software for $10/month. And even that isn’t strike-by-strike, just a 60 second update.

      1. Why is it illegal? You’d think that would be good for public safety and also for storm chasers..

Thanks for the link man, I’ll save this. 60sec updates are a whole lot better than 10min or more ones..
