Monday Evening – Cool Rules

June 29th, 2009 at 6:44 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

Grand Haven 7:10 PM Monday-   Here’s GRR radar.   Chilly air coming down…it’s only 50 at Copper Harbor, 57 at Gaylord.  The mid-Lake Superior bouy shows an air temperature of 43.7 and a water temperature of 38.5.  Our air is coming off Hudson Bay which is mostly still ice covered.  Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay has only had one day this month that got warmer than 60.  They are 4.4 deg. cooler than average this month, after being 10 deg. cooler than average in May.  It was warmer last night at the lakeshore with a west wind coming off the now warmer water.  However, the lake is cooling with the wind stirring up cooler water from below the surface.  There are whitecaps on Lake Michigan and red flag warnings on the beachesHudson Bay is still mostly ice-covered (click on “Latest” under “United States”), as are many lakes in northern Canada.  Check out the view looking north at Barrow, Alaska over the Arctic Ocean (view 24-hours with the midnight sun up there now).  Here’s Kimmirut, Canada (see the ice on the bay – and nothing growing yet!).  There’s still a little snow on the mountaintops at Banff. Cool Canadian air is moving in for at least the first half of this week.  Time to give the A.C. a rest.  Peak Gusts Sunday afternoon:  40 mph – Battle Creek, 37 mph – Grand Rapids, 35 mph – Fremont & Saginaw, 33 mph – Kalamazoo and Flint, 32 mph – Holland, Lansing and S. Bend.  The visible (daytime) satellite loop or the infrared (nighttime) loop shows the clouds with the cold pool aloft.  Here’s current Michigan weather observations.  The surface map shows some chilly air from northern Minnesota northward.   The cooler air will be with us for the Monday-Thursday AM time period.  Here’s Lake Michigan Water TempsRainfall amounts in our area Saturday Night were quite variable…from a few hundredths to 1.33″ at a gauge in Kentwood.   Nice quarter moon in the western sky in the evening now.

    2. Rob Dale says:

I’m not sure your second sentence makes any sense at all…

      1. eeeeeee says:

fixxer is right ,we need more warm stormy days

  5. Dan says:

The cool spell should be short lived! I’m sure the temps warm right back up after Wednesday right? Summer is really just getting started! I look forward to coming warmer temps!

  6. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

    .12 overnight here…
awwww, nice, mother natures air conditioning….one big upper low sliding out of canada as we speak!

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Bob, I just can not wait untill January and we are having highs in the low 50’s (I hope) I hope you can take the sun and lack of snow at that time…LOL
      SlimJim

      1. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

        :o )
        Hey SlimJim,
Of course I can take 50* in Janurary, remember I plow and shovel in the winter, after two Great Winters I will take it either way, IM not getting younger!
Remember three winters ago St.Johns got like 28″, just hoping it’s not like that!

      2. michael g (SE GR) says:

Don’t take this the wrong way SlimJim, but I hope to see you crying about the bitter cold air and snow about six months from right now!

        1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Michael, as long as its in Alaska or Montana I wont care one bit. But if its here if we can set some records I will be all for it but if its just cold and snowy then…I will be crying frozen tears.
          SlimJim

  7. Sarah (in Martin) says:

Today GORGEOUS. Not too hot, not too cold, sunny, just a fantastic day. :) Oh and I turned the air off. That makes it even better.

  8. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Summer is so short around here in another 8 weeks it will be “fall” again and the only good thing about fall is that the great lakes keep us warmer.
Still hoping for a warmer then average fall and winter.
A not too bad 68° here now but waiting for several days of mid to late September weather coming up.
    SlimJim

  9. Steve (Kalamazoo Township) says:

Fixxer crying over cool temperatures again? What’s new…

Besides Bob P. and I, where are the real men who enjoy the cold weather. Please show yourselves. I need something else to look at when I visit this blog besides people whining we aren’t getting any storms or temperatures in the nineties.

    1. FookUFookMe says:

If you enjoy the cold weather so much, move to the U.P. then. As for the rest of us that are glad when we get warm weather in this crummy state, rise up against these fools that have nothing better to do than to be smartasses! As for me I like it hot for the 3 months that aren’t winter around this dump!

  10. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

.24″ here last night…This cool snap will be short lived, but so will the next warm spell, as the NWS is talking about another cool snap sometime after the 4th!

Yeah, I do like cool weather, but I also like warm temps this time of year so I can swim and enjoy summmer!

I think Bill’s Forecast of a slightly cooler than normal summer is correct, I do think whatever warm spells we do get will be short lived like the last one we got!

  11. SteveW says:

Tried to do some fishing on Sunday, but it was too windy. I’m surprised to see wind like that during the summer; I guess the flow from Canada must be pretty strong and made for some good mixing in the mid to low levels of the atmosphere. Any new word of sunspot activity???

    ~SteveW

  12. Michelle (comstock Park) says:

I love the cooler weather after last weeks 90 degree temps. And, I HATE winter, but this is great! Nice balance:)

  13. Mike says:

    I like it cool….and I like snow.

  14. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Still looks like a good week of “early fall” weather coming up. As for the so called “cool weather lovers vs the warm weather lovers” If we could bottle yesterday’s weather “less” the wind and keep it that way all year long I could live with that! As for those who like cold and snow all year long! move to Antarctica where I think you would like it very much. For those who like it “cool” all year long move to the coast of Washington or Orgaon or even norther coastal California when you would be happy. As for me I like it to be summer in the summer and if we have to have winter I want it then and not spread out for over nine months.
    SlimJim

  15. I like the variety – way better than when I lived in Missouri for a few years, where it seemed to be 90 and humid for 4 months straight! I will thoroughly enjoy the cooler temps – 70 and perfect in DeWitt right now!!

  16. General-Gouda (Grand Haven) says:

Maybe we’ll get another Hurricane Huron with this Low. ;)

    1. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

Wouldnt that be something, but if I remember correctly, the Lake huron water were a lot warmer for that event? Maybe not..
Wouldnt hurt to see a weather event like that again!

    2. Rob Dale says:

Water temps were about 10*F warmer for that event than we have in place today, plus synoptically there isn’t a whole lot similar.

GREAT article by a team of PSU / UofM researchers (Greg Mann is the science office at NWS DTX now) at http://ams.allenpress.com/archive/1520-0477/81/2/pdf/i1520-0477-81-2-223.pdf

      1. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

Great article Rob, think I have read it before…..just a increadible event!

  17. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

With general cloudy skies and a temp of 70° we are having a nice late September day…Whoops is late June well it feels like late September when 70° would be average.
Also it looks like June 2009 will come in at near or just over average even thought we only had 10 days of above average temps and 20 days of below average temps.
There are some indications that we could have some hot weather in mid July and that may salvage this summer some what. Until then we can save money on the AC and be glad we do not live in the UP where they may have to turn on the heat.
    SlimJim

    1. Rob Dale says:

“Also it looks like June 2009 will come in at near or just over average even thought we only had 10 days of above average temps and 20 days of below average temps.”

Not sure where you got your stats from, but for June 2009 GRR had 14 days of above normal, 2 normal, and 13 (couting today) below normal. The only double-digit days were above normal, so when you consider that half of the month was warmer and the only extreme side was on the warm side, that might explain why it’s warmer than normal.

      1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Rob you are taking the airport readings only problem most people including me do not live at the airport! But any way the point is this month will end up being almost average, not hot but not cold either (on average) although it started cold and we had a warm spell late in the month.
        SlimJim

        1. Rob Dale says:

True, I didn’t know you were using a different location in GRR. Are they using official reporting standards? Most non-airport locations do not, so it’s apples/oranges.

And it’s pretty easy to get a count – takes about 10 seconds on a slow day ;)

The CF6GRR product is issued daily with the monthly output, you can google that if needed (also CF6LAN and CF6MKG)

      2. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

I should also apologize for exaggerating the number of days below average. And I congratuate you in taking an interest and then taking the time to check it out.
        Slimjim

  18. Dan says:

Winter is so long that is nice to have the warmth and heat during this time of the year! Of course, just as snow storms are neat to track in the winter so are thunderstorms in the summer. Although, it is not going to feel much like summer around here for a few days. I was just outside and actually it feels quite refreshing. Hopefully, we can have a our share of warmth in July and August. I really enjoy the weather, ALL OF IT. There really isn’t much I can do about it right? Have a great day!

  19. This weather isn’t as nice as I was hoping it’s be.. cloudy and rainy.. blegh.. tomorrow is going to be COLD!

I’m looking at the light at the end of this tunnel though.. hard as it is.. but that 75F is looking good.

  20. michael g (SE GR) says:

Hard to believe highs will only be in the low 60’s the next two days. Usually we only stay that cold during mid summer if we get an all day rain.

    1. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

It’s happened before, but I do love the heat break, I will take every “cool” day I can in the summer!

    2. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Its happened before where we have had highs in the 60’s in mid summer also if we get some sun it may get warmer then the low 60’s tomorrow and Wednesday. Now if we had a full sun and a hi in the low 60’s now that would be rare!
And as for me I will enjoy ever sunny (and even cloudy) warm 50+ day we can get next winter heck come January I will take a nice and sunny 40+ day.
Not sure what the record cold hi is for tommarow but for today it was 61 way back in 1943.
      SlimJim

  21. Mary says:

If anybody hasn’t figured out we are in a “cooling” period and Not a global warming Al Gore insane delusion; wake up and smell the coffee!!
Blog folk: Please stop talking about winter! It will be here soon enough without the chatter.

    1. Rob Dale says:

If anyone can look at this map from last month http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/2009/may/Last1mTDeptUS.png and say that the country is in a “cooling” period — I say “Change your coffee vendor” :)

  22. Jevon Murphy (Dalton Township) says:

Hey Bill…Last week Weds. during the warm weather I picked up a max. temp. of 92.5* with a heat index of 101*!!! That was amazing heat for the especially for the lakeshore!

  23. Tyler says:

It’s July tommorow already. Summer is almost over. Well in the U.P. it never comes. Winter just sticks around. I am hoping late august gets here fast for fantasy football season and Packers football.

  24. fixxxer says:

dear bill, please stop with the “cool rules’ crap already…thanks!

    1. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

      whinner

  25. Bill Steffen says:

In response to Rob Dale…take a look at the map that he linked to here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/2009/may/Last1mTDeptUS.png Look at Michigan on the map. Now based on the map…what was the deviation from normal for Kalamazoo in May. Make a guess. The actual data showed Kalamazoo was 1.9 deg. BELOW average. Does the map show that? No! How about Ludington…make a guess based on the map of how their temperature deviated from normal in May. The actual data shows they were 2.3 degrees BELOW average. Cadillac is off, too. They were -2.4 for May and that area should be a darker shade of green. I took one of these maps last year and looked at Nevada (I don’t remember which month). The graph showed the state about 3 degrees warmer than average…yet when I looked up the actual data…not a single first-order station was that warm. How many times has Jim Hansen’s data had to be corrected by people like Anthony Watts? …and every time the error favored warmer temperatures. I wish I had more time to delve into this, but there is too much money at stake in this issue not to verify if what they are telling you is true.

  26. Tyler says:

Northern Michigan’s climate like Gaylord, West Branch and Houghton Lake is very similar to Escanaba and Iron Mountain but warmer than Marquette and Houghton. Milwaukee and Madison are very similar to Grand Rapids and Lansing. Green Bay is very similar to Mount Pleasant and Chicago is very similar to Detroit. It’s kinda cool to see the average temperatures of both cities on opposite sides of Lake Michigan.

  27. FookUFookMe says:

    YEAH BABY!

  28. Mike M. says:

Why, if it isn’t the little baby who cries about high gas prices! Of course, you’ll be happy to pay twice as much for your energy if Dear Leader gets the money.

This IS climate we are experiencing, wee man. The PDO, AMO, and solar cycles are all syncing at the same time…

    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/01/25/warming-trend-pdo-and-solar-correlate-better-than-co2/

BTW, this one trillion dollar middle class tax increase, how much is it supposed to bring down the planet’s temperature?

  29. eeeeeee says:

i try to burn a tire every ozone action day we have, while im cutting the lawn.

  30. Mike M. says:

Oh, I’m sorry. I keep linking to sites with facts and science and words you socialists don’t understand. Why not get a conservative to interpret for you?

We the people? More like we the leeches. That’s the problem with a democracy. Sooner or later the non-productive outnumber the productive.

Now get off of your mom’s computer and go clean your room, troll.
