anvile-of-t-storm-over-africa <–Picture taken from the International Space Station of a thunderstorm (anvil) over Africa in Feb. 2008. The article said the top of the storm reached to 75,000 feet above the ground! You can see the shadow cast by the storm and the overshooting top. Click on the picture twice to enlarge, or view the picture and article here.  Check out the schedule to view the ISS when it flies close enough to see here in Michigan.

That photo is “Far Out” man!
What a shot! 75K into the atmosphere seems unreachable?

    1. Rob Dale says:

75K is do-able in the tropical regions… This picture is from Feb 2008 if you want more info.

Probably took one heck of an updraft to do that, wonder what the hail was like, or if it dropped any tornadoes.

  3. Christine says:

Wow, that is super cool! Africa gets some crazy storms I’ve heard.

  4. I’ve seen this image before, it was my desktop background for a good 2-3 weeks =)

    It’s awesome

I remember seeing a photo of anvil heads over Africa in a book a few years ago. It was shot from the shuttle, and there were many “little” anvils all over an area. It was so cool, knowing each was probably 50k or more. Stunning perspective. Thanks for sharing, Bill.

Off subject but of great interest.
I wonder how many record cold July records that have been broken this year! I know here in GR we will set a new record cold July and a new record for the lowest highest temp for July and we will not be the only one as others have fowled.

… Record coolest July in Madison WI…

The average temperature for the month of July in Madison was 65.7
degrees. This breaks the old record for the coolest July. The
previous record was 66.7 degrees in July 1891.

In addition… the highest temperature recorded in July this year was
just 82 degrees. This is also a record for the coolest monthly high
temperature for July. The previous record was 84 degrees in July
    1869

A July for the record books.

The east coast also has had (I believe) record low temps this summer. My dad lives near Buffalo and my friend lives near Manhattan- they both have complained about the cool summer.

    2. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

Slim Jim, Chicago broke the record also!

        and Flint I believe

        1. Bob P. :o) St.Johns says:

Records were established in Rockford; Madison, Wis.; South Bend and Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and Benton Harbor, Saginaw and Flint, Mich. The month’s temperature in those cities finished 4.5 to more than 7 degrees below normal.

It would be interesting to know what kind of weather was happening on the ground under that kind of storm.

Rain looking less likely this weekend, but the NWS has us with below normal temps and ABOVE normal precip in the 8-14 day forecast….

Hey! Good news! My pop up blocker is actually blocking the Netflix pop up that shows up every time I click on something on Wood’s site. A temporary victory!

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Mine too, sure they will soon find a way around that.
