Record Cold, Sunshine Ahead

August 30th, 2009 at 2:07 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

We set a record for the lowest high temperature ever for August 29.  Saturday we struggled to only 62 deg.   It reached only 61 at Muskegon, Fremont and Ludington, just 55 in Cadillac and Marquette could reach only 54 Saturday afternoon.  Today (Sunday) will likely be the fourth day in a row with highs no warmer than the mid 60s.  The average high is 77.    There’s a frost advisory for northeast Minnesota for early Sunday AM.  Some patchy frost is likely across Upper Michigan and northern Lower Michigan early Monday AM.  The good news is that this is going to turn out to be a very sunny week here in Michigan, as the clouds start to erode today (Sunday) it should be partly to mostly sunny from Monday to Saturday (good start to the Labor Day Holiday weekend).  We’ll start out chilly (esp. in the early morning with a chance of patchy fog Monday and Tuesday AM) then we’ll get temperatures back up to at least the upper 70s later this week.  Enjoy!  Side Note: Here’s an interesting story about a man who makes really cool artwork from trees damaged in tornadoes.

  1. I only went outside twice yesterday… I’m glad LOL

So thankful about the fact sunshine will return. That will make the cool weather at least tolerable.

I am noticing the shorter days too…

  4. I agree this sucks, but it’s not gonna help if we just keep bi.. err.. complaining about it gang. Just bundle up, there’s light & warmth at the end of this long dark tunnel!

I read in an earlier Blog that this August will end up being around average overall for temps. Is there any data out there just monitoring weekends?? LOL For those of us that own watercraft, it sure has seemed that most of this summer has been miserable during the weekends. I know we have really haven’t had much of an opportunity to go out on the water this month, as this weekend, and last weekend both were quite cool, and the the weekend of Coast Guard Festival (August 1st) was rainy most of the day on Saturday. We have really only had 5 or 6 nice weekends all summer long.

Beautiful story about the native American who does the tree carvings. Would love to have one of those in my yard.

Would like to know if the cooler summer means a warmer winter to balance out the temperatures to average? What do you think?

    1. Rob Dale says:

No, that’s not how the weather works.

Back in state now. Bright sun all the way home from KC until we got about one hour into MI. Then it was like pulling on a big blanket of clouds and rain. It was 63° and a great sunrise when we left and only 57° at home. This morning is just perfect. Gonna put the radio outside and get a bonfire going. Got a better look at the tornado damage where it crossed 94 in Chesterton,IN. Its pretty bad. Its only 1 1/2 hr drive from GR. Go take a look and see how sure you are to want severe weather to come thru. Its been 10 days and they were still out there cleaning up.Lots of houses were in the path.

    Is this global warming?

    1. Rob Dale says:

Just as much as it’s global cooling too…

We should warm up next week and have some nice weather for a change too bad for most of us summer is now over.

Might be a good weekend next weekend to put the dock away and the seadoo’s and the pontoon. Hmm.

    1. gina (yankee springs) says:

I would, if you get the chance… I think early winter is going to surprise allot of people ,even though Bill told us, So I am getting all put away and only getting out what I am using in the moment. best of luck

      1. 99chevy says:

Well, it’s family event, usually on labor day all the aunts clean the cottage and the uncles and cousins help with the dock and the shore stations, then we drive the seadoo’s over to the boat launch, then take the pontoon to Matteson Marine winterize the cottage and call it a season till Memorial Day

That is really great that one man can take the damage done by mother nature and make such beautiful artwork. I would really like to see them personally. I bet they are better in person and more than words could ever say. Some people have such nice hidden talents.

  14. Terry says:

Still no sunspots this morning. Current Stretch: 51 days. Another cold winter is very near.
