High Winds!

Big Waves Here’s a link to the GRR summary of straight-line wind damage Sunday Night in Montcalm Co. winds up to 70 mph).   The coldest temperatures will be Thursday AM with a chance of at least scattered frost.  Then more showers for Friday and Saturday.    The wind at the South Haven Lighthouse Weather Station at 9 AM Monday was 42.6 mph with a peak gust of 57 mph.  They hit 60 mph at 4:55 PM Monday afternoon.  At the Muskegon Beach Weather Station, the peaks occurred between 10 AM and Noon with a steady 43.6 mph with a peak gust of 54.5 mph.  At the Holland Channel, the Spyglass Condos Weather Station reported a steady wind of 45 mph (a gust to 63 mph nearby).  The Grand Haven Channel had a peak gust of 56 mph Monday afternoon.   At the Michigan City, Indiana Beach Weather Station the wind was 48.8 mph with a peak gust of 59.1 mph.  Here’s a list of peak winds from GRR.  The mid-Lake Michigan buoy reported steady winds of 36 mph with waves as high as 12.1 feet Monday evening.  A buoy west of Muskegon recorded 14-foot waves.  Webcams:  Muskegon Channel, Holland Channel (has been intermittent today), Grand Haven State Park Beach (zoom into Grand Haven on the map), Grand Haven (Steelheaders), Ludington Beach, Leland.  If you can find any more webcams that show Lake Michigan waves, leave a comment and let me know.  Check out the hail this morning in Byron Center and Cutlerville, also a nice rainbow in Rockford this AM.  Click for Grand Rapids NEXRAD radar loop.     It looks like we could see scattered frost and lows in the 30s Thursday evening…and it looks like showers developing on Friday and lasting into Saturday.

I told my mom I was gonna take her $1,000 camera out on the Holland pier and get a good picture for her of the big waves. HA (no I”m not stupid enough to actually do that)

  6. timeno says:

i just missed getting hit by a patio umbrella that seemed to come right out of the sky! i was standing in the lee of the garage and it came at me from the east. crashed right into the garage next to me! i think it flew over the garage and took a nosedive. dont know whose it is.

Almost no wind here at all, have had some good on and off rain showers but not much wind only in the 5 to 10 MPH range. Its cool but not cold at 51°

  9. matthew (muskegon) says:

Just got back from Pere Marquette, and it was VERY WINDY! Would guess the waves were 6-8 footers. All the roads out there have lots of sand and drifting sand. Even had a few spots where you may have gooten stuck in a little car. Stop signs were shaking also. Would expect the waves to drastically increase as the day goes on. My 3 year old wanted to get out of the truck and go swimming because he saw 2 surfers…Silly Kid!

  10. Christine says:

The way the acorns are falling onto our roof, I think the squirrels are plotting the next terrorist attack. Just kidding, I know it’s the wind. It sure sounds like warfare though :)

  11. 99Chevy says:

Here in wayland the tree’s are as calm as a blue sky day

  12. Just north of Breckeridge many reports about 7 miles north of us, roof taken off buildings, 5 trees down and many doors taken off barns, many trees in different direction makes we wonder that perhaps it wasn’t just straight line winds. Be nice to see a few pictures of some of the damage.

    1. Rob Dale says:

There haven’t been any storms of any sort today, so it wouldn’t even be “straight-line” winds. It’s just winds from the low pressure center to our north.

In any case, the NWS doesn’t have any of that info, so it would be nice to hit their website and report it.

  13. LightningWatcher says:

Been getting some power outtages on the outside of Allegan city. I’ve seen some gusts get up to 40-45mph this far inland. My friends in Hamilton and Holland say it gets much worse at times there.

waves are just rolling in on

  15. Apparently Marquette and us will be getting the brunt of the wind up here today and tonight. Impressive forecast. The wind is picking up, but the worst is yet to come. Will keep you posted as I am able.

  16. HEY GANG! I’m heading to Grand Haven with a friend this afternoon to photograph the waves and get some video too!

You may be able to see us on THIS WEBCAM: http://surfgrandhaven.com/ live feed of the Grand Haven pier/beach area. Likely between 3-4..maybe 5pm If you’re out and see us, stop by and say hey! You may see us on the cam too, we’ll wave.

    Enjoy the day everyone!

    1. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

Hope you made it before the rain! I want to see pictures =)

  17. Tyler F says:

I think the Spyglass website is getting overloaded, too many trying to look at the waves and the server is getting overwhelmed….

Waves aren’t as big as I thought they would be…

  18. meg says:

I’m in Lansing and I love looking at the waves. Wish I could be near the big lake today. Some good waves on surfgrandhaven.com
I love the fall, but not the cold :) :)

  19. ok the next 8 days… Chilly!! FALL IS HERE!!! BILL WE NEED A WINTER FORECAST NOW!!! LOL

    1. fixxxer says:

  20. grsandi says:

Blech, and double blech!!! Wish the wind would die down. The ducks and geese love it though:)

  21. mrsbrown says:

I have not seen the south haven south beach so crowded since summer…cars everywhere and I wish I had a dollar for every picture that is being taken of the waves washing over the lighthouse here..
    stay OFF the piers people!

  22. fixxxer says:

not very windy today in wyoming and gr. i hate the cold and rain but i guess fall is officially here so ill have to deal with it. just please hold of the snow till november. this weather sure doesn’t help the cold that has been kicking my butt for the past 7 days.

  23. Christine says:

Just come from checking out the waves of Lake Michigan! What a beautiful sight! We could barely get out of the car and walk down the steps, the wind was sooo strong, almost knocking us over. Just sitting in our car the wind was rocking the vehicle. It’s been windy here outside of Allegan, no big branches blown down though, just the usual smaller branches. We lucked out from big storms last night, yippy!

  24. Sarah (in Martin) says:

There are some awesome beach pics in Posted. I spent too long looking at them.

  25. timeno says:

missed you fixxer where you been?

    1. fixxxer says:

ive been sick….. man i hope this cold weather (low 50’s) don’t hang the whole month of october?

  26. marycbwyoming says:

I don’t know where you live Fixxer, but in my part of Wyoming (44th & Byron) it has been windy ALL DAY! I work at home and my computer is right by the window and it has been driving me crazy! Anyone here from Detroit? I’m wondering if the Tigers game will be rained out tonight.

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

They are in a rain delay now and it really dose not look that good for tonights game.
      SlimJim

  27. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

It is more wind now then there was earlier in the day, in fact this AM it was almost calm for a good bit. Even though in my area we did not have much wind we did get a lot of rain. I am now up to 1.88″ for last night and today! 50° here now with that light rain.
    SlimJim

    1. fixxxer says:

agreed the wind picked up in wyoming too, hope the hell i don’t loose power tonight.

  28. HOLLAND was a blast from the wind today !!!!! mother nature is sure tough! who needs the oceans!!! we have it all right in our backyards love MICHIGAN! BILL what a fun couple of days it has been!

    1. fixxxer says:

      you call this fun?

      1. fixxxer says:

^ never mind i forgot where i am, you guys think winter & snow is more fun than summer….( face palm )

  29. Not as bad as they originally predicted. Our high wind warning was downgraded to an advisory. The top gust at our house as been 45 mph. It is blustery, but nothing like what we were expecting. The big deal is the dropping temps and windchill.

  30. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

At 6pm the waves hit 12.1 feet at the lake michigan bouy! Nice!

  31. michael g (SE GR) says:

A day like this lets you know that fall is here for sure, and winter is just around the corner. :-)

A nice soaking of much needed rain too.

  32. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

Winter Storm Watch in Utah mountains also!! Winter is coming to the lower 48 =)

  33. Hey gang! Made it back alive.. pix and vids to come.. stay tuned!!!

  34. 99chevy says:

Holland State Park was fun, there were some seadoo’s out riding the waves, waves crashing over the pier, getting pelted in the face with sand……I love michigan,

  35. I have a couple of videos and a photo album up on my Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/charlesimages

If you do not have me added feel free to add me.

If you do not have Facebook.. I will have a wunderblog entry up soon that I will link everyone to when complete!

    1. StormWatcher says:

Thanks for sharing the pictures and video. I didn’t really expect the winds to be as high as predicted (because they so often aren’t) and with the wind coming right out of the West, there didn’t seem to be enough fetch to bring the waves up to the 18 foot height everyone was talking about. Still a nice impressive wind event, though!

    2. direfloyd (SE Mich) says:

      Nice!!!!

      1. Bob P. :o) (St.Johns) says:

        sweet picks Charles

  36. Still blustery here this morning. Steady wind about 20mph and gusts of 30-35mph. It is only 45 degrees at our house, so the windchill makes all of this feel more like November.

  37. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Rain fall total here is now up to 2.12″ (storm total so far) with light rain still falling. Have a temp of 50° here with that light rain.
    SlimJim

  38. Motorcycle Michael says:

I was on the Holland St.Pk Pier on Monday from 4pm-5pm. The car stream was steady, but fewer came out to actually experience first hand.
Had to leave when rains started up about 5pm.
    It was a great time!

    1. 99chevy says:

I was in line at 6, and got to the parking lot at 6:30, I went out on the pier, (well, it wasn’t the long pier, but it was the NOAA building, On my way there, I had to hide behind that green sign, then hid behind some people, then eventually got to that building, and it was just fine hiding behind the building.

  39. Tim Walters (Sault Ste. Marie) says:

It’s a chilly 46 degrees with a windchill of 40 here in The Soo. Accuweather has snow in the forecast on Oct. 10 for here, may not happen, but still nice to see.

    1. Rob Dale says:

If it’s a 2 week forecast, from AccuWeather or anyone, it will likely not occur.

  40. Ben S says:

Every stalk in my patch of Sunflowers was snapped in half by the wind. I had a few over 8 feet tall! I picked out the best, put them in a vase, and took them indoors. It was great watching them and the warm sunny September helped them grow like mad.

    1. timeno says:

wind also flateened my sunflowers, tall zinnias and marigolds(one plant over six feet tall). i cut them all down and lined them up along the fence where they make a great display. might pull up some cornstalks and add some pumpkins to the display and take a picture to remember 2009 by. gosh i love fall!

  41. Vicki says:

I had a tree snap, which fell on some electric lines, which put pressure on the telephone pole, which caused the pole to snap in half! Consumers Entergy had another pole up in less than six hours and power, cable, & phone was restored within 12 hours! The crews that came out here did an awesome job!

  42. Gary says:

Drove From Wayland to Grand Haven to see the waves and have dinner. Awsome show. When I got to the state park the restrooms were closed for the season. I guess it’s to much to ask to keep them open because we have to spend out tax money on ILLEGALS.Pissed off
