Tornado hits Rome, Italy

Go to fullsize image A tornado moved through part of Rome, Italy last week.  One 21-year old man was killed and five others were injured.  The storm hit around 5 PM, during the evening rush hour.  Thunderstorm winds were clocked at 57 mph.  Dozens of trees were toppled and 30 roads were closed by falling trees.  Back on June 7, a tornado in Treviso, Italy left  twenty people injured and on October 2nd, heavy rains of up to ten inches hit Sicily, triggering massive landslides that left at least 2o dead.  Strong tornadoes are rare in Europe, but do occasionally hit Italy.  On Sept. 11, 1970, several tornadoes hit near Venice, leaving 47 fatalities and tornadoes near Parma, Italy on July 4, 1965 left 25 dead and 160 injured.

    I have been to Rome. It is very densely populated. I am surprised that only a few people were injured.
