Flood Advisory has expired

October 22nd, 2009 at 11:47 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local <–Live radar of W. Michigan.  10:25 PM Thursday:  FLOOD!!  First we had a flood in my basement!  It’s not the weather, the washing machine just threw up a “large” load (towels, mostly).  At least it’s clean water…but what a mess.  Anyway…the Flood Advisory that was in effect for Kent, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren Counties has expired.  A total of 3.02″ of rain in two days at Byron Center.  Just some scattered lighter showers and sprinkles for Saturday.  Over 2″ in GRR, Wyoming and Jenison since the rain started yesterday.  Minor ponding of water on Chicago Dr. nr. Hudsonville, a minor washout on Ottogan Rd. west of 80th Ave. and around the Keeler Lake Area on County Road 352 in Van Buren Co Friday afternoon.  The wind (gusts to 47 mph on the beach at Holland) and rain have sure brought down a lot of leaves.   We  have a Winter Weather Advisory for the U.P from Marquette westward for 1-5″ of wet snow.    Here’s the usual links: GRR NWS radar, Great Lakes radar, Storm Total Rainfall, latest surface observations, a surface weather map, GRR NWS discussion, Visible Satellite loop (daytime), Infrared Satellite Loop (night), Here’s Milwaukee NWS radar and Chicago radar, the Spyglass Weather Station (Holland Channel) and the Muskegon GLERL weather station (if they get it back). Small Craft Advisories will be up for Lake Michigan. Rain totals here.  It still looks cold for the first week of November with accumulating snow a possibility.

  5. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

As of 4:24PM I have had a high of 68° here so as I do know know about the airport I did not reach 70° so this looks like the first time in history that GR will not reach 70° in October. (The hight at the airport also has been 68° so far)
67° now and starting to cloud up.

love the weather today, i wore no coat and shorts and wasn’t even cold. too bad the bottom drops out after today…. this crazy weather is why all of this flu outbreak is happening over here. that and the darn dirty schools.

    1. Rob Dale says:

Weather changes don’t spread the flu, and dirt in a school doesn’t either.

It’s the lack of personal hygiene.

    2. Germs – sneezing into the air. Sneezing in your hand and touching a shopping cart.

  9. Mike M. says:

OK, now that it looks like we are going to make it, is this indeed the first October where we have not reached 70? That would be…unique.

    1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Mike this was from the NWS office in GR several dasy ago:

Well I have a answer to my 70 degree question, thanks to the NWS

      Indian Summer Coming?
Indian Summer is defined as a warm spell that is preceded by at least one killing freeze. Since most of Southwest Lower Michigan has already had a killing freeze, our next warm spell would then be Indian Summer. Since October 1st, the warmest high temperature at Grand Rapids and Lansing has been 61 degrees, at Muskegon it was 60 degrees. On Grand Rapids records, going back to 1892, there has never been an October when the high temperature for the month failed to reach 70 degrees at least once. The most recent October that Grand Rapids did not reach 70 degrees before the 21th was in 1977. In that year it took until the 21st to reach 70 degrees. While all three sites did start a period of above normal temperatures on the 21st in 1977, at both Lansing and Muskegon it took until the 24th for the temperature to reach 72 degrees at both sites. The point is, that while we can not say it will reach 70 degrees this October at Grand Rapids, Lansing or Muskegon, our records do confirm a period of warmer weather in every October back to the 19th century for all three sites. Muskegon and Lansing did not always reach 70 degrees. However since 1892, Lansing has had only two years it failed to reach 70 degrees, 1981(67 degrees on the 31st) and 1917 (69 degrees on the 18th). Muskegon, being closer to Lake Michigan, has had a few chilly Octobers. In 1917, it never warmed above 58 degrees. More recently in 1936, it never got above 64 degrees. Other than that, Muskegon has reached 70 degrees in every October since 1988. Our forecast projection into the middle of next week suggests Wednesday or Thursday could see temperatures rising into the 60s, so it is likely our area will see at least a period for warmer weather before the month is done.

So if (just if) we do not reach 70 here in GR it would be a new record.
BTW it did reach the low 70’s in SE Michigan today
