Wettest Octobers

The Joys of Fall <–Ahria (age 3) playing in the leaves (picture from Bethany Hanson on POSTED - if you know Bethany, let her know that I think her kid is cute off the top of the scale!).  Since we already have 4.67″ of rain for the month with more light rain Sunday Night/Monday and a possible significant rain event long about Friday, I decided to look back at our wettest 8 Octobers to see what followed.  I looked for anytime a following month from November to March was in the top 10 for cold, warm, most precipitation or least precipitation.  There were six months that fell into the coldest top 10 and only one month that fell into the warmest top 10.  We had four months that were in the wettest top 10 and two in the driest top ten.   The third wettest October (1911) was followed by the coldest January ever and the 2nd coldest March.  We have to get to 5.2″ for the month to get into the top ten and that is very doable.   Bottom line…this is another indication that this is not going to be a warm winter.

i dunno, yes i agree this month has been nothing but rain, clouds and cold weather. it does get old after awhile, id like to see one week of just sunshine. i still don’t believe this winter will be that bad. heres to hoping for an early spring come march. id really like to see this crap weather pattern change and we go back to normal weather by next summer.

Not sure as to how cold it will be, but there is an old weather fokelore tale that claims that:
    Much rain in October,
    Much wind in December

we will be able to keep an eye on that one. And two weather lores I am not so sure about for this year!

A warm November is the sign of a bad Winter.

    Flowers bloomin’ in late Autumn,
A sure sign of a bad Winter comin’

    39° and cloudy here

I saved the Farmer’s Almanac forecast for October, downloaded on September 30th, just to see how they’d do.

Full report later – but they said precip would be only 1/2″ of rain. How’s that coming?

      1. Slim Jim(nw GR) says:

Yeah they sure missed that one, they also missed July, August, and September as well. I did not bother to look further back. But its only entertainment so what do you expect? BTW Rob what is your long range guess for the upcoming winter?

        1. Rob Dale says:

I’m not at all a long-ranger, but I see no reason to go for anything other than below-normal temps.

      1. kevin says:

Stay home and make lots of money. Many of us make more money if it doesn’t snow!! Bring on a warm dry winter

  6. fixxxer says:

since bill has been non stop talking about winter all last spring and summer how about you give us one of your outlooks for summer 2010. look in your crystal ball and tell us bill.

    1. Rob Dale says:

That’s 8 months away. Recall that you can’t even make a 2 day forecast, so don’t ask anyone to make an 8 month one.

      1. fixxxer says:

id still like to hear it.

    Bill,

Will you be coming out with your winter forecast in a couple weeks? I think last year you came out with it a little before thanksgiving.

    Thanks,

    SteveW
