Don’t forget our local Vets

December 7th, 2009 at 5:04 pm by under News, Uncategorized

Sixty eight years ago today, we remember the events that took place at Pearl Harbor and the brave men and women who fought for our country.  Well, we also need to remember the many Veterans right here in Grand Rapids.

I was at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans today and talked with my friend Harold, who is a WWII Veteran.  He was telling me about the stars on their Christmas Tree and how the Vets who live there make specific wishes and people can take a star and bring that Vet their gift anonymously.

There are still lots of stars on the tree.  Granted, some of them may be hard to fill. I saw one asking for an 8 track player, another for cigarettes but most wanted either a gift certificate or clothes.  It would be great if all the stars were taken from the tree and all the Vets get their Christmas Wish…

Your story really moved me. Usually we make sure we purchase for the kids from the Angel Tree, not thinking too much about the elderly. This year we’ll make sure we do both. The veterans from our country get forgotten in the hussle and bussle of the holidays but they are the reason we are still here!
    Thank you for your story.

  2. I live in Holland and saw the report about GR Home for Veterans and the stars that haven’t been taken from their wish tree for Christmas…I would love to help, but can’t get to Grand Rapids – Could someone pick two stars and let me know the wishes so I can fulfill them? Thank you.

JoEllen, I can pick up a star when I visit the location. Do you have a dollar amount you want me to stay in? I won’t pick up stars with TV if you want to stay in a budget amount of under $50 bucks. Just let me know…..Linda in Rockford, MI (

My husband deployed in 2008 to Ramadi, Iraq and is scheduled for antother deployment soon in 2011. I feel that its our duty to give back to these men who were willing to give their life for the freedoms that we hold so dear. Even if you can only purchase one gift. Get your stars now and look for amazing After Thanksgiving day sales. Some want cigarettes, other a DVD player and some are just looking for socks and shirts. I highyl encourage everyone to pick up a start and give back to your local veterans!
