How are you Connecting with Community?

February 12th, 2010 at 2:41 pm by under News

Once again we are asking our viewers “How are You Connecting with Community?” The second annual Connecting with Community Awards are underway asking for your nominations. We are looking for collaborative efforts, partnerships, groups coming together to help solve problems in our community.

It’s easy to do, just fill out the nomination form and tell us what you’re doing. This idea came about from our partners GRCC, Huntington, Metro and Art Van. We are always sharing our efforts and collaborations, let’s hear what others are doing.

We get so bombarded with troubling news everyday, that I think we need to sometimes step back and see that there is also a lot of good things going on right in our neighborhoods. I guess it’s the optimist in me.

So please share your stories with us so we can share them with others. Nominate a group or groups working together and making a difference.

I would like to share what my Curves has done. There is an annual food drive through Curves every year. It’s for women to join together to give back to the community. This year our owner Susan challenged the members to get together 500lbs. Well it came in a bit here and there. She also runs a special connected to the drive and specify the food be healthy that’s donated. So new members brought theirs in and signed up to get healthy through excersise and a healthier diet. We made it to 500lbs in about 2 weeks. Then she said lets do it again….And we did again and again. Some fun competativeness between women made our poundage count soar today.I think it was something like 1600plus lbs. We have a couple places in Muskegon it is going to that can use the help and we had an open house today to celebrate from 9 to 12:30 then from 3:30 till 6:30. It was a great sucess from our members old and new, and a great help to the community.

I can’t believe that with thousands of people gathering in Grandville for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure breast cancer walk this past Saturday that your channel doesn’t find this to be a worthy enough cause to at least post something to your web site. This organization does alot for women-mothers,daughters, sisters,aunts- in this community seeing how 75% of the money raised stays local it would be nice to see all the area news channels cover this amazing organization not just WZZM. It helps charge our communities with stories of people getting together for a common cause. Remember 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their life time thats one in eight, with in your family, work, church, school, ect. So Please next year cover this story and be a sponsor.
    Thank you
