Earthquake – felt areawide
BREAKING…earthquake felt throughout much of Lower Michigan. Preliminary magnitude 5.5 centered in Quebec north of Ottawa and Cumberland. The quake was felt from the East Coast to the Midwest and up to Hudson Bay and was centered at a depth of 9.8 miles. This area sees a little minor damage from an earthquake about every 10 years. The two biggest quakes in this area occurred in 1732 (magnitude est. 6.2) and in 1935 (magnitude 6.1). Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mts. are felt farther away than earthquakes in the mountains. Typically in the Midwest/Northeast, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake can be felt at least 300 miles from the center. In Ottawa, Canada workers emptied downtown buildings and cellphone service was down within minutes of the quake as callers overloaded the system. The Globe reports there are unconfirmed reports of minor injuries and damage. Here’s more on quakes in that area. The most significant e-quake centered in southern Michigan in the last 200 years was a 4.6 temblor on Aug. 10, 1947 centered near Coldwater. On Sept. 2, 1994 a small 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred just north of Lansing
I was in my parked car at Walgreens at 68th/131 with the windows down and the car slightly rocked, almost as if someone was physically rocking it, felt like a very windy day but no wind.
crazy.
I was in a confrence room at Blodgett hospital on the 6th floor and we felt the floor shaking.
alot of my family on the east side of michigan felt it. i guess my cousins ceiling in his basement collapsed in clinton twp. which is in macomb county.
I felt the tremmor at my moms apartment on the 8th floor. The floor and stuff in the apartment shock.
and my dad in sterling heights mi. felt nothing…thats just weird.
I felt nothing here in Allegan…seems most in grinding Grand Rapids. I did Not Miss the earthquake!! You folks in G.R. can have it
So crazy I felt it in Niagara Falls
I sure didn’t feel anything, even though in the Lansing area I was closer to the quake.
Felt it in Oakville, ON. Seemed almost like a vertigo spell until the windows strated crackling and things started moving. Very freaky.
I was sitting at my desk and felt a gentle side-to-side motion….my first thought was “huh! wonder if that’s an earthquake?” It was 1:45 PM
Well, sure enough!! But I’ve been through a mag.5 earthquake and it’s pretty darn scary. Glad I was here and not there
Same here, at first I thought someone was playing games with me and rocking my chair gently.
My dogs come to work with me – and I assumed one was leaning on my chair. When it didn’t stop after a few seconds, I looked down – and they were elsewhere! THAT’S when I suspected an earthquake. Once you’ve been in an earthquake – you recognize the motion; although we are too far to have felt the Primary waves, I’m pretty sure?
I felt my chair moving, too, although at first I thought it was a semi going by. But it kept shaking about 10-15 seconds. No one else in the office noticed it.
I’m currently in Toronto on business, and we felt it here, slightly. Crazy that it reached all the way back home in West Michigan!
Im on East Beltline by Leonard and we felt it! Couple of the girls thought they were getting sick!
We felt it here at the MI Blood building. Numerous people reported shaking chairs and a feeling of “Is the room moving?”. This was just what I remeber when I was a kid in San Francsico, CA. I moved there right after the 1989 earthquake, and felt many tremmers like what we felt today.
My life is so boring! I was in downtown Grand Rapids at the GVSU campus, and I didn’t feel a thing!
I was at work on an elevated steel platform, and I felt it shaking back and forth, and the fluorescent light above me was swinging. I thought “earthquake” but those never happen here, so I figured someone bonked it with a forklift!
What time was it? I was in my backyard all day and felt nothing.
I was sleeping at 1:40 I woke up because I thought my cat jumped on my bed, I looked for the cat but she wasn’t there, I looked at the clock it was 1:44 the bed moved enough to make me think the cat was under the bed, she wasn’t. Later at 2:30 I turned on the news to learn the earthquake had happened. I know now that the motion was the earthquake.
Thanks for reporting this on TV! I was sitting in a chair inside my house, felt the tremor for about 30 seconds and thought my cat was batting at the back of my chair. When I looked around and saw her asleep in the other room, I thought either the house was shifting or I must be going crazy!
The U.S. Geological Survey site showed no aftershocks M1+. That’s kind of strange. Maybe Canada is more stable ground than “The Ring of Fire.”
How come no mention of the earthquake…that was felt from the U.P. and downstate somewhat?????
I was outdoors cutting down some 2″ branches that were rubbing on the TV cable wires. I was on a tall ladder propped against a larger branch and my wife yelled at me from inside and said to quit cutting down the branches because her rocker was shifting sideways instead of going back and forth. We live just North of Kalamazoo Ave. and M-6.
Is that why we thought we heard thunder at that time? I was at a restaurant on 28th and Lake Eastbrook with a friend. It sounded like roadwork … like breaking up a road…..but there was no roadwork around there. We heard it a few times, all within a few minutes.
I thought it was just the rear end I was removing from an s-10 pickup that hit the floor about the same time lol.
I was at my office today looking out the window when the windows began to shake. I grabbed ahold of the table I was sitting at and felt it shimmy. It lasted seconds but the feeling was unmistakeable. For those who did not feel it, it was an uneasy feeling (as if you have an equilibrium issue or as if you were on a carnival ride).
the family claims to have felt it in sturgis
My parents felt it in Sault Ste. Marie. My 80 year old mother thought my dad was rocking her recliner to trick her. Too funny!
precious memories.
Watching TV in bed and got motion sick from the room rocking, thought I was going crazy then I saw a post on Facebook saying it was an earthquake. If that gives me motion sickness I’m glad we don’t have them more often!
i was at my ffriends house and i felt it cause i was on their tramp it was very scary
I think I vaguely remember that happening back in 1994.
