Cool Rules – update

June 29th, 2010 at 1:00 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

<–black raspberries, picture from skb on POSTED.  I picked and ate some wild black raspberries Sunday.  Cool Air is here!  Take a look at the latest surface map and check out the temperatures.  Thurs. update:    It was 32 this Thurs. AM in Leota and a frosty 31 in the U.P. at Spincich Lake.  It dipped to 39 in Big Rapids for the 2nd morning in a row and Cadillac and Grayling were down to 37.    This is very clean, crisp Canadian air coming down from the frigid and about 45% ice covered waters of Hudson Bay.   It probably won’t rain in most areas of Lower Michigan until Monday (there will be storms west of a line from S. Ste. Marie to Chicago on Sunday.  Temperatures will be warmer for the coming weekend.  By the middle of next week, we’ll probably be back to a warm, humid pattern with occasional thunderstorms.

so is this the start of a cooling pattern or are we going to heat back up again? not liking what im seeing this week at all. we have yet to even see a 90 degree day so far.

    1. Rob Dale says:

Yep. Summer is over. Come back in November!

    2. Laker says:

Did you even read what Bill just wrote fixxxer? Read the last few sentences.

      1. Jeff (SE Ionia County) says:

Think fixxer wants to see the word HOT ;)

        1. fixxxer says:

pretty much, ive yet to see a warm up like we had in may. 70 is too cold!

        2. Allegan Joe says:

HOT as in Summer…is a Good Word.!! :-)

    3. slim jim (NW GR) says:

While this week will be on the cool side, this June will end up being yet another month of above average temps. And while GR has only had one 90° day so far this year I am sure we have a good chance of seeing several more. While I like to warm (80 to 85 days. 65 to 70 nights) After being in the mid south last week having temps in the mid and upper 90′s is a little too hot (unless you stay inside)
      SlimJim

      1. Bill Steffen says:

I still think we have 90-degree weather ahead of us. If we’re still sunny on Sunday, it’ll probably reach 90. It’s tougher to do when there is this much water standing around and the ground is wet. The sun has to spend a little more energy evaporating water than heating air.

    4. Bill Steffen says:

      We made 90 on 5/26…we’ve had three days when it’s made 89 (5/24, 5/30, 6/18). We’ve made 80 degrees 29 times already…we only had 48 days of 80-degree weather in all of 2009.

  2. Jim M says:

Looking at the computer models for Hurricane Alex….some trend to bringing the rain into Michigan….any probability and timing forecasts?!

    1. Jesse (Hudsonville) says:

I don’t see that happening at all on GFS. It shows Alex dissipating out over central mexico and then the moisture headed due west

    2. Rob Dale says:

No. Hurricane track forecasts are impossible at that timeframe.

    3. fixxxer says:

thats all we need is more rain!

  3. 63 degrees, mostly cloudy and very blustery up here today. Sweatshirt weather and a great refreshing breezing blowing through the house.

  4. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Bill, that picture was taken by my mother-in-law. :) She’s psyched that her pic ended up on your blog. :)

  5. Eliz says:

I, personally am looking forward to the cooler weather. I just can’t tolerate the hot & muggy stuff we’ve had lately.

  6. Breuker19 says:

Great weather for summer celebration in Muskegon! Seems like every year around this time we get a nasty storm, they must have come just a week early.

  7. Good West michigan needs a Thunder storm rest let my yradofbricks dry out …….My summer party is coming way to fast and it’s to wet out back..From the cool dry air to the nice day outside with some wind INDY!!!

  8. slim jim (NW GR) says:

The next few nights will be cool so it will be a good old Michigan “don’t” week that means dont have to have the air on nor dont have to have the heat on!
    SlimJim

  9. Jeff (SE Ionia County) says:

Just a note .. low 70s forcasted for Tuesday and Wednesday still Rob :) Or should say was forcasted a week out by Bill .. See why i stick with storm team 8 , one word ACCURATE ;)

    1. Rob Dale says:

Actually WOODTV is forecasting mid-70′s for Wednesday.

      1. Jeff (SE Ionia County) says:

My point made as you said last week that you didnt believe the low 70s theory at all :)

  10. Sandi says:

Ahhhh nice break from the humidity – and excellent sleeping weather.

  11. Those raspberries are really good. We have a bunch of them up in my area, I make sure to mow around them :)

I obtained some photos of cumulus clouds today, nothing much but they looked neat so I grabbed the camera haha. I’ll put them up on my FB in a bit

  12. OH BTW (reposting from my FB here) You know that old saying about the corn crop.. “Knee high by the 4th of July”? Well it’s June 28th, and over 6ft tall.. We’ve had a lot of rain, and warm temperatures this year, great growing conditions for the corn!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

It’s interesting that off to our south the strong winds in t-storms have flattened a lot of corn that wouldn’t have been flattened if it wasn’t so far along.

      1. With so many MCS’s I’m not surprised, especially through Illinois. I remember driving back up through there in early may, and all it is is fields, no resistance anywhere, so the wind can wreck havoc on the crops so very easily down there. Thankfully we here in MI have tree lines between many fields to help break some of those powerful winds.

        1. Jesse says:

Most of the Corn around here is knee high …..we actually got too much rain

  13. Jerry (Lansing-northside) says:

A breath of fresh air before the warm and humid weather returns!

  14. michael g (SE GR) says:

    AND BILL WINS AGAIN!!

Lows in the low-70’s? That’ll lead to a hot afternoon

Not sure I would agree with any forecast of high temps in the low-70’s next week.

Hmmm, I would as Storm Team 8 has a pretty good record in forcasting

Yeah, but Big Rob is WAY smarter than Bill.

Hmmm…wonder why he’s not on his own blog.

Ensemble MOS has 79 on Tuesday for a high, with a range of 78 to 83. ECMWF also shows near if not above normal next week. I’ll stick with my “no low 70’s for high temps”

    1. Bob Dale is a coffee drinker!!!! Mr. Steffen is our weather man!!!

    2. Rob Dale says:

The fact that you took the time to go back into every blog post the past week to find mine referring to an extended forecast temperature (one of which won’t verify) yet skipped every one where I talked about severe weather on Friday in southern Michigan (nailed it) and a moderate threat of severe weather in eastern Michigan on Sunday (hmmm…) tells MUCH more about you than it does me ;)

      1. Jeff (SE Ionia County) says:

Just admit it Rob , you were off ;)

        1. Jeff (SE Ionia County) says:

We dont do this for a living like you.. Pressure is on you not us :)

        2. Rob Dale says:

I did. Apparently in your rush to prove something, you missed the first sentence.

“to find mine referring to an extended forecast temperature (one of which won’t verify)”

…and no, I don’t get paid for long range forecasts. I concentrate on the 24-48 hour timeframe only. I think it’s MUCH more important to get today’s severe weather threat than worry about a 5 degree error at seven days out.

You went to all that trouble to “prove” I had a five degree error at seven days. And missed the “proof” that I was much more accurate than you on severe weather forecasts, which were deadly in Michigan. Hmmm… All about priorities.

Guess we know where yours are!

  15. slim jim (NW GR) says:

Gee michael, you are walking on thin ice LOL. A rather pleasant 75 here now. Do not be too surprised if we see some 30′s in northern lower Michigan with the mention of frost some where in the interior of northern Michigan.
    SlimJim

  16. Todd In Nunica says:

well for those like me that work outside all day every day I am loving this weather, today was absolutly wonderful, looking foward to a break in the heat so I can get caught up, a little easier to keep up the pace when its not so humid.

    1. Bill Steffen says:

I just ran into a roofer on the bike trail yesterday evening and he’s going to get as much done as he can this week while it’s relatively cool.

      1. Todd In Nunica says:

I would have to agree, I am trying to do the same!

  17. Bill (Eastmanville) says:

I am finally cutting the trees that are down in my yard. This weather makes it so much easier. And I will sleep like a brick with the cool nights.

And with a week of dry weather, I hope it knocks down the skeeter population.

  18. Tyler says:

It’s been alot warmer downstate lately then the U.P. People from up here were saying how hot it was down there then when they came back to the U.P. it was cool. It hasnt been a very nice summer so far up here but wisconsin and downstate have had a warm summer. You guys get all 4 seasons down there while the U.P. just gets 9 months of winter and 3 months of fall.

  19. Tyler says:

Lower Michigan or at least south of Mount Pleasant gets summer from March to October. You guys dont get much of a winter down there at all. It may snow but its always gone shortly thereafter. Grand Rapids could get a foot of snow but a week later it is usually gone. Your winters are more typical of fall or spring. Summer is very hot and long at least south of Mount Pleasant.

    1. Laker says:

      Huh? I disagree.

    2. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Um, have you lived down here ever?

      1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

        http://www.climate-zone.com/climate/united-states/michigan/grand-rapids/

        http://www.climate-zone.com/climate/united-states/michigan/marquette/

I’d say that southern lower Michigan (ex. Grand Rapids) is about a month ahead in heating and a month behind in cooling when compared to the UP (ex. Marquette). However, I really don’t see any data that suggests that it’s summer in southern lower Michigan in March when the average high temps are only in the low 40s.

No one would argue that the UP gets less snow, though; it’s obvious that the UP gets more, and that it sticks around longer. However, just because there isn’t snow on the ground down here doesn’t mean people are out at Lake Michigan in shorts and flip flops. :)

    3. slim jim (NW GR) says:

Well Tyler I will agree with you that the UP, norther lower and norther Wisconsin do not get much of a summer. However I disagree on your thinking that south of M 20 we have long hot summers, with almost no winter. While we have warm summers (some hot days but for the most part just warm) we have long cold winters (compared to most of the Eastern US) And when you go to most places in the country and tell them, you average around 70 inches of snow a year they give you that ‘that cant be true look’
      SlimJim

  20. Linda (west of K-zoo) says:

If today is a repeat of yesterday, I’ll be thrilled. Just beautiful! Is there any way we can bottle this up and trade it for those snowy days of January? Enjoy it while its here!

  21. milander says:

wonder if that cool air coming down will collide with some warm/moist air from Tropical Storm Alex?

  22. fixxxer says:

much too cold for this time if year. if the long range holds up we could be in the 90′s in a week or so. we shall see, i just hope this is the last Big cool down we see until september. i feel bad for my kids that are camping today, too bad they cannot swim at all. last year they couldn’t even leave the camper because of rain and low 60′s for highs.

    1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Today is a great day for hiking and exploring the woods and sitting around a campfire. :) When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. :)

      1. Todd In Nunica says:

I second that, beautiful nights to be outside sitting by the fire, I only wish it would hold for the weekend, I am heading up camping, as far as swimming, heck my kids will swim no matter what the weather, their kids, bet the water feels really warm. camping and dripping with sweat is not my favorite thing to do.

        Bring on the cool!!!!!!!

  23. thadeous says:

Just picked a pail full of those berries! Didn’t even put a dent in the patch…
It’s a good year for em!

  24. slim jim (NW GR) says:

partly cloudy with a cool breeze and 69° here. And its only 70° on the inside of the house and I have now closed the windows.
    SlimJim

  25. This is the best week out of summer yet cool come on guys u have not saw cool yet ….Wait till a week from now mid 90′s and storms again so enjoy the BEST SUMMER WEEK so far …..From a big man to a nice warm week INDYWARM!!!!!!!

  26. T (Cascade) says:

Anyone a tomato expert on here?

    1. Brad says:

      LOL…you can’t be serious.

  27. Tyler says:

I even notice a huge difference between here and Green Bay. You leave here in a jacket and get down there and your in shorts. Its hot down there in the summer. The nights dont dropoff in temps either. It stays in the 60s.

  28. It sure is chilly tonight, glad I kept my coats in the closet…

    1. Todd In Nunica says:

yea I just installed the AC unit in my camper, good thing it includes a heat option….funny I cooled the camper down then heated it back up………..

the sky is great tonight, just wish I was farther away from the big city………lol

  29. Ryan says:

In Mount Pleasant, we SHATTERED the previous record low of 48 degrees by dipping to 44 degrees this morning!! As long as weather.com is accurate, that’s quite a record! They are forecasting 47 for a low tonight, so there’s a chance we could break another record tomorrow morning. My apartment was actually chilly this morning even with all of the windows closed. I like warm summer weather, but sometimes it’s nice to feel like fall a bit early.

    1. Ryan says:

Quick addition…according to accuweather.com, we actually hit 43 degrees.

  30. Dan says:

Fixxer: Where are you coming from we have hit 90 already this year. I know we had a few days in June where it hit 88 and 89. That is not 90 but it is definitely warm!
You and Rob Dale should get together and form an alliance. The I never listen to anybody else alliance. Rob thinks he has the only correct opinion and Fixxer thinks negative all the time!

  31. Judy (Fennville) says:

Bless the cooler dryer air!!! It’s giving my house a chance to dry out from the flooding and will reduce the mold growth for a bit until we can get the damaged drywall cut out.
Sleeping was much more pleasant last night too without the warm muggy air.

  32. Dan says:

Yes, the weather has been sensational lately! It feels very refreshing! I hear we are on track for a warm up for the Holiday weekend? I’ll take it!

  33. slim jim (NW GR) says:

A very cool late June night last night. I had a low of 47° I am not sure what the low for the state was last night but Cadillac and Grayling both had a over night low of 37°. So it was definably winter coat weather there this AM
    SlimJim

    1. Laker says:

Looked like 32 up in the Clare area! Frost!

  34. Dan says:

True Slim but I bet with the Summer Sun, they warmed up quickly!
How does the long range look? Are we going back to Hot and Humid weather for July and August? I don’t mind the Warmth but all the rain was a bit much.

    1. mid 90′s around Tue, Wed with pop up Severe Storms!!!!! 90′s start on the 4th get to a lake or a pool!!!! INDYHOT!!

  35. Looking forward to the heat & humidity + storms. That is the way I like it

    1. Laker says:

You and me both Charles. That’s summer.
