Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseid Meteor Shower will be peaking Aug. 11-13, when you can see up to 60 meteors or “shooting stars” an hour. You want to look high in the northeastern sky, above the constellation Perseus. There is only a small crescent moon that sets early, so the sky should be fairly dark this year. Try to get away from the lights of the cities where the sky will be especially dark. Here’s when you can see the International Space Station. Finally, check out the Astronomy Picture (video) of the day. You can follow Meteorwatch England on Twitter and see how many they are seeing there. Finally, you think NASCAR has some spectacular crashes…get a load of this. (image from NASA).
Where I live it is pitch black!! Perfect viewing as long as there are no clouds.
Same here! Saw a nice one streak across the sky last night
wonder if the ISS gets pelted with pebbles this time of year???
one of the highlights my year. one year i saw over 150 in three hours. hope it’s not cloudy!
The Geophysical Institute out of Alaska says the aurora activity level is 4, which is about where it was last week. Their forecast says “Auroral activity will be active. Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be … visible low on the horizon from Vancouver, Great Falls, Pierre, Madison, Lansing, Ottawa, Portland and St. Johns.” If you’re out where it’s dark counting meteors, look to the northern horizon for any hint of Northern Lights.
Will we be able to see the beginnings of it tonight? However I’m seeing a lot of clouds entering the picture.
Seeing a tornado watch out to the west ……INDY!!
Lots of thunder storms to our south in ILL. moving north HMMMMMMM could be a meteor THUNDER storm tonight!!!!INDY!!!!
not to sound dense but what is a meteor thunder storm?
lol ……..Maybe a Meteor with a loud sound and a cold sprite on the side! INDY!
ok, thanks … I will be on the lookout for them!
oh my
Are any of the storms west of us going to reach us yet tonight? Overnight? They look as though they are on a track in our direction. Hoping NOT to have to water tomatoes tomorrow. Bad enough that my electric bill is out of sight, hate it that the water bill might not be far behind! OH NO, I’m sounding like FIXXER!
Looks like the storms in Ill. are weakening. South of GR will get it as usual. Tonight and tomorrow and Thursday will be a fail. Don’t worry, we all are beginning to sound like fixxxer, he’s rubbing off on us!
I like to have Intellicast.com radar up on my screen – I like the interactive ability – and I have different people’s locations saved (in southern Illinois for example) so I can check what is happening ‘in their neck of the woods’ – and it looks like the line east of Des Moines is strengthening – heading east. But, what do I know? I’m just a grammy! Please God, send rain to my tomatoes!
That should have been north of DesMoines…
The last sentence of your comment is funny…LOL
My son and I just came inside at 11pm and saw a few, can’t wait to see the next few nights. We were talking to our beloved asking for “signs” that they are happy in the heavens, weird thing is they showed after we’d ask.
Well, looks like tonights viewing is a fail for this too! Bummer!
I went out to Lowell to check out the meteor shower and didn’t see one
. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. It was a little hazy out too…
Seen 14 last nite between midnite and 3am. None of them were as good as the 9 i saw last week. Lots of clouds/haze/fog last nite to fight with. That and cars coming and going in my driveway. Point your chair NE and look that way, and straight up. You will see them.
The local astronomy club is having a Perseid Meteor Watch at Cascade Township park beginning this evening at 9pm for those interested. More information is on their website – http://www.graaa.org
Meteors 21
Blood sucking Mosquitoes 221!!! 2 many to count
gosh but what a show…..
Lost count after 40 meteors last nite from about 12:30-3:30. 3 of them were across the whole sky with huge tails.
Very cool!
