Hottest Day of the Summer
<–Grand Haven sunset from “Andy” – click to enlarge. Sunday was the hottest day of the summer for much of West Michigan. We made 93 in Grand Rapids, Holland (Tulip City), Alma, Sturgis and Kalamazoo. Lansing, Ypsilanti and Flint (where it’s been very dry) reached 94. This was the 7th 90-degree day for Grand Rapids, so I got my prediction for more 90-degree days than the last two summers combined. Lakeshore high temperatures: 85 – S. Haven Beach, 87 Holland (Spyglass) and Grand Haven (Steelheaders Weather Station), 81.7 at Muskegon. Manistique, in the U.P. where the south wind comes down the full length of Lake Michigan stopped at a pleasant 77. Isle Royale reported afternoon temperatures in the low 80s. The mercury climbed to 91 in Cadillac, 90 at Traverse City, Alpena and Manistee (airport). The Lake Michigan water level has dropped 2 inches in the last month. Lake Erie is down 5″ in the last month and Lake Ontario has dropped 6″ since the end of July. It looks like this summer will be the 6th warmest ever in G.R. and the warmest summer since 1955. Despite that we have not set a record high temperature for any day this summer.
Even 2″ loss by any means is a TON of water loss. Maybe the humidity we had was the water vapor from the warm water temps.
The surface of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are the same so it is just one giant lake of about 44,600 square miles. So if the water was 1 mile deep it would be 44,600 cubic miles, so divide by 5280 to get the value of one foot of water and it is over 8 cubic miles! So two inches is above one CUBIC miles of water.
i guess im immune to the heat because it didn’t bother me today. now tomorrow at work it may?
What may I ask do you do for a living fixxxer?
facility maintenance.
come down here it would be just your cup of tea
See Billy forecast…He’s right on targast and it’s HOT HOT HOT !!!
Ugh. I hope this ends soon. Give me snow any day! Thanks for the accurate forcast Bill. At least I was able to be mentally ready for this hot weather.
SNOW…hold your tongue.!! That’s a terrible word to type
fixxer’s post back on August 20th said that we’d only top out in the 60′s today… Maybe he meant that was his forecast for the lake temp at 20 feet down?
Accuweather was the reason for that one.
I don’t think so, unless AW came here and posted under fixxer’s name?
the colder air is moving in by weeks end.
Spot on Bill ! See why Storm Team 8 is one or is the best for being (Accurate) in forcasting ! Nice job
It was not only very warm today but the dew point was (is) up into the upper 60′s making it humid. Tomorrow should be a repeat and the next several days look warm and humid.
GR is going to end up nearly 5° above average for August after coming in at 4.1° above in July and 2.1 above in June for a very nice and warm summer.
And to the best of my knowledge we did this with out setting a record high temp for the summer.

Bill…You have done an…” Excellent “…Job Forecasting the weather and your Predication months ago of a Hotter than Normal Summer with more 90 degrees temps came true and developed as you stated it would. You’re The Man, Mr. Steffen.!!! It has been a Great Summer and I will surely Miss it when it’s Gone
…NOT looking forward to Winter and the Cold Air…Brrr…..
I love fall/winter and cold air. Nothing better then being under a warm blanket at night with a good book!
just crank you a/c up and you can still do that!
I agree with you fixxer and if I might add….grab a book and blanket and relax….then go outside and thaw out in the Great-Hot-Temps.!!
I say BAH to you heat lovers,BAH.
Yeah but outside cold air is F R E E !!!!
So is the Hot Air and Better than the cold.!! We don’t get stuck in the snow in Summer and the roads are Not icy and slippery….aahhh… Summer
Are you feeling sick..??…must be heat exhaustion.!! How can you say such terrible words..??..Fall and Winter and Cold Air…lol
Fall also means Hockey and Football and cider and doughnuts. Mmmm. Maybe if Summer had a sport that wasn’t boring :p
Hockey….boring….Football is better. Baseball & Soccer and Tennis are good sports in the Summer.!! You must Enjoy the warm cider & doughnuts…perhaps comforting to you as some others. I will take my comfort from the Southern Winds and a soft drink “on the rocks”
….Aaahhh……Heat…..
Bill ~ I am curious if the water level drop in the three lakes listed is “normal” for our lakes?
Yes, this is the time of the year where water levels start going down slowly until spring.
I didn’t think that Sunday was the hottest day of summer, WOW! Yes, I was out late in the afternoon and it was very hot! I hope it stays warm right through September and October. Did you catch the cooler weather forecast on tap for the Labor Day Weekend? I think I saw highs in the mid 70s. Does it look to heat back up after that? Do our chances for 90 degres days go down siginificantly in September? I am hopeful that will get at least 3 days that hit 90 in September.
AWESOME JOB on nailing the forecast, Bill! Fall is quickly approaching!
We (at GR) can (have) hit 90 or better until near the end of September. While it may be possible to hit 90 this year I think 3 times is a stretch here in GR.
SlimJim
i would think so be cause here is s.c it is only i the low 90s. if yours highs are only in the 70s then no i dont think so
The warmest since 1955? You mean this summer was hotter than ’88 overall? We flirted with 100 a number of times that year. I thought THAT summer was the hottest I’d ever experienced.
Yes, and the main reasons for that was that in 1988 there were more “hot” days with highs in the 90′s the dew points were lower so the night time temps could get down lower as well. So this year we had days where it was ‘only’ in the upper 80′s but the DP was very high so we had more nights in the 70′s. Remember 1988 was very dry and that’s why it could get hotter during the day. Yesterday (Sunday) even though the DP was in the upper 60′s and the temp was in the lower 90′s it did not “feel” as hot as some of the days earlier in the summer.

It was simply the most hellish summer I ever remember – I worked in a food processing plant kept at 50 degrees, so was wearing jeans/sweatshirts/workboots on a daily basis – but driving a car with NO AIR CONDITIONING
To Fixxxer: I’m glad you enjoy hot weather, because your job doesn’t sound too fun for the next few days to me! I’m hiding indoors with grandkids – thank God for the Disney Channel.
I was at the Whitecaps game yesterday afternoon and due to the breeze being out of the south, the entire stadium was blocked from any wind. It was a hot one yesterday in the sun without any breeze.
Yes it was. But there were other games out there that were just as hot with the humidity. Also there is not much shade there as well so that dose not help either.
SlimJim
It didn’t seem like the Hottest Day of this Summer. It was quite warmola’ but I recall cooking just standing outside on other days…anyway….Stay Longer Summer.!!
I am going out in My YARDofBRICKS to start a hot Fire ..Enjoy the heat like the Fixx said 60′s and of the week Ron Dale will have his heat cranked and DF will have his boat sank …..From out in the hot smoke with a cold joke for U……..IamINDY…….
LOL, fix has made many predictions… as far as I know the boat is still floating =)
lol…..
It’s been a hot summer. Whats this winter have in store for us. The acorns falling are huge. The biggest I have ever seen. Mt neighbor is close to 80 and she said she also never seen them as big as they are this year. Does that mean anything?
YES it does!! The squirrels will be very happy this winter!
Just ideal conditions for producing them!
The GFS has a front stalling over us later in the week. Earl jumping in also.

Yeah, it was VERY hot yesterday. Not too chilly today either. Im liking this last burst of heat. Cause according to Farmers Almanack…. We are supposed to get more Snow than usual. I was thinking the same thing.. with the warm lake temps and all…… but im not going into that when it is 90 outside!

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 90 DEGREES WAS SET AT MUSKEGON MI
TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 89 SET IN 1952.
in july alone it would be 10:00 pm and be 90. so it ant that bad. come to s.c and get sum real heat
Hottest summer since 1955! What does the up coming winter look like. I’m pretty worried. The most snow since “55″ Most blizzards since “55″ YIKES
Don’t say Winter-or-Blizzards….those are Not words to say during Summer…LOL
Let’s hope those..”things” do not happen….think Mild Winter-little snow and temps. in the 40′s
looks like fall will be setting in all of the sudden in the next week, im seeing a decent cool down and i don’t like it. im even seeing some possible mid 60′s…blah!
also if that hurricane comes up the east coast that could spell trouble for us here in the form of wind, heavy rain and cold weather.
something tells me this is gonna be a bad winter and i hate it. lots of acorns dropping and my allergies haven’t been this bad since 2007 and we had a horrid winter that year.
IF the hurricane comes up the east coast, it will directly affect our weather not at all.
it depends how big it is when it hits. the squalls could cause some issues here.
Winter of 2006-07: November +2.8 degrees, 0.3″ of snow. December 6th warmest ever +7.5 degrees, 11.6″ of snow in the first week of December, no snow after that, 7 days made 50 degrees or better. January 2007 +4.9 degrees 15.3″ snow (less than 30″ of snowfall going into February. Feb. 1-18 was cold, Feb. 3 near blizzard conditions with temperatures around 10 above. March was five degrees warmer than average with four days in the 70s. No measurable snow in March after the 7th.
i know for a fact we had alot of snow in winter 2007-2008 because i worked in holland at the time. and when i first moved here to gr in november 2006 i believe we had a whopper of a blizzard that winter as well. i remember being snowed in at ramblewood.
YEEEEE FLOOD WARNINGS FOR SURE!!!
I hate to wish away summer but these 90 degree temperatures are a bit much for my family. It makes me and my toddlers cranky! I can’t wait until Thursday night. A cool night into a nice 70 degree day is just what our we need!
