Christmas Eve

December 24th, 2011 at 3:05 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Snow falling Friday evening – picture from Janet on ReportIt (click to enlarge).   Well, at least parts of the area are getting a white Christmas Eve!   Snowfall Friday evening totaled a trace in many areas south of I-94 to as much as 2 1/2 inches in northern Kent Co.  The National Weather Service had a little over an inch.  I had a final total of 1.4″ downtown on the car hoods and 1.5″ here at home.  Thanks to the many snow totals taken and reported as comments here on the blog.   I’ve been up looking at the latest model data.  No big storms during the coming week.  The NAM model gives us a dusting of snow around 5 AM Tuesday.  The GFS gives us a few hundredths of a rain/snow mix.  The European model has a few flurries on Sunday (more north of G.R. than south) and then 0.13″ Tuesday, which if all snow could be an inch or two.  So, it’s a little stronger with the Tuesday AM system – but still not a big storm…though there could be a few slick spots early Tuesday.  The GFS would give G.R. about an inch of snow next Thursday, another inch on 1/5 and maybe 1-2″ on the 9th – it again has temperatures in a narrow range from low-mid 20s to low 40s.  The European (which I saw to 7 days) would have rain on 12/30-31 with temperatures Friday reaching the mid 40s.   In any case…go with warmer than average temperatures and no sign of any big storms.  Joe Bastardi made an interesting comment.  He said the 3 years that most closely fit our current pattern were all El Nino years (we have La Nina now!).  We do have split flow, like El Nino with the northern jet across Canada blocking the Arctic Air and keeping the flow west to east across the mainland U.S.  I’ve remarked before how this is charting new territory…we haven’t seen this with a La Nina before.  If anyone has some thoughts, I’m open to hear them.  The years I’ve looked at do have snow picking up in Feb./March – but still well below normal for the winter.   Happy Christmas Eve.  Hope Santa is good to you!

I measured about an inch on my car…parked at Burton at Breton from 9p-3a with some light flurries still coming down, but nearing the end.
As much as I dislike snow, it ‘does’ look nice outside. But I assume it will melt later today.
Actually, mid-40′s for New Years is a good thing for those that still like to go out and party. Would rather have that than ice covered roads.
    Merry Christmas to all!

  2. FDavison says:

I am confused! I’ve been hearing people all over praising this snow free winter. I don’t understand why folks prefer dreary, cold, rainy weather over normal winter. We live in Michigan! It’s winter! Bring on the snow!
    Just my opinion.

  3. Vince says:

Bill & readers…Merry Christmas….had about 1.5 inches in Ada. I’m holding out hope the Tues event(now around El Paso) cranks, and cuts to around Toledo giving us a good thump w/pretty nice temps relative too many such events. A long shot but as Jim Cary says in Dumb & Dumber after his wouldbe girlfriend tells him theres a 1 in a miilion chance they ever get together…”so you are telling me there’s a chance”. In this pattern you have to grasp every straw you can. Happy Holidays!

  4. Cliff (Scotts) says:

Merry Christmas to all, I think its been colder at night out here in Afghanistan, its actually pretty warm out here today.

  5. Rumrunner says:

Merry Xmas to all of you guys and gals.

  6. kevin. w says:

Merry christmas to Bill and all the bloggers. Hey Bill gotta thought for you on this weather pattern. I think alot of meteorologists are scratching there heads on this pattern, because this La Nina is producing things that have never happened, especially when your in a particular pattern you think will pan out by looking at what should be expected in future (looking at the winter back in October) events that just aren’t going as planned (la nina or el nino). So what I’m getting at is that we should all know that there is a science to forecasting the weather its just that somethings can go very wrong when forecasting a seasonal forecast and there is no one to blame except mother nature herself. I personally think whats going on is that the pacific jet is stronger than once thought keeping the cold air from coming down, the southeastern ridge is stronger than previous thought and the arctic oscillation is stronger than it normally is. Hope this make sense. Merry xmas!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Well, that was far more “educated” than my assumption of why the weather isn’t acting more “La Nina-ish”:

Every time we mere mortals think we understand something – Mother Nature throws us a curve ball. Hence my adage: “Mother Nature always gets the last laugh”

Just a dusting of snow here at Gun Lake – certainly not enough to make a Snow Angel, which is how *I* determine a “White Christmas” ;-)

      Merry Christmas, everyone!!

    2. big Daddy BC says:

Some of us have nailed the forecast so far, kevin. …Above average temps and precip. I predicted that in early October. But you’re right, Bill’s scratching his head. lol

      1. JoAnne says:

One major problem is that the climate data is changing so quickly (quickly in historical averages) and that people have only been keeping track of these averages for a miniscule amount of time. We plug our data into the models and trust that they will accurately tell us what is going to happen. We simply just don’t have enough data yet. The longer that we plug in data, the more accurate that we will be able to predict. That tied together with the rapid warming of the Earth just doesn’t allow the models to know what is going to happen. The meteorologist do the best that they can, but most rely too much on the models. How often to you see a weatherman/woman go against the majority of model runs? Forecasts get changed more rapidly against models during a system event such as last night. Areas of northern Kent received up to 2.5 inches. That was not predicted by any consensus locally. Bill did update as it was happening, but that’s not forecasting, but rather aftcasting. It’s not the forecasters fault. they are taught to trust models, it is simply not enough data to compute accurately, especially as the Earth’s climate changes. I’m sure many of the readers out there have green thumbs. Our hardiness zones are moving north as the globe heats. This is just one example how the models are effected

        1. JoAnne says:

          BTW, Happy Holidays All

        2. michael g (SE GR) says:

          Rapid warming??? Good one Kevin!

Northern hemisphere ice is at it’s highest level in the last 5 years, and is once again approaching the long term average.

All while WORLDWIDE ice remains at it’s long term average.

A question. If the world is experiencing such catastrophic rapid warming, and it’s supposed to be most noticable in the arctic regions, WHY IS THERE JUST ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF SEA ICE IN THE WORLD AS NORMAL?!?!?

        3. Bill Steffen says:

You’re darn right the climate data is “changing rapidly”, Joanne…and it’s bad news for you spendthrift alarmists. The earth is not “rapidly warming” right now. The NASA IR data shows that November globally was only 0.12 degree warmer than average, and global temperatures have fallen for the past four months:

Global accumulated tropical cyclone energy is near an all-time LOW and it’s been trending down for 15 years: Strong to violent tornadoes have decreased from the mid 1970s to 2010:

Arctic ice is growing and has a greater extent than at any time in the past 7 years (closing in on only one standard deviation from normal): Antarctic ice is well above normal:

Global temperatures have leveled off: Public support for alarmism is falling rapidly:

        4. JoAnne says:

OK Bill, I tried to stick up for you, so why don’t you tell us all why you can’t forecast worth a bucket of spit? It takes very little for you to go off on your political campaign of lies for your corporate thugs. Everything that you said is twisted and cherry picked. Now, tell us why you follow the models and why they don’t work!
BTW, lies, lies and more lies is all we get out of you.

How do you live with yourself? God will judge you for putting your corporate thug agenda against mainkind.

        5. JoAnne says:

Also, I’m having a nice Christmas laugh looking through all of your sources. LMAO. Why don’t you try a credible source for a change? LOL

        6. Skot says:

Some of you are WAAAAAAYY to serious about weather. I for one love the microwave….but could careless about doing a thesis on why it does what it does. Like technology its always changeing. Same as politics. I thought a blog set by its creator in the direction he/she posts.( and to dis fixxxer). Happy HOLYdays.

        7. JoAnne says:

Bill, Please explain again why NOAA is wrong and a weatherman working for corporate America should be believed. The following is a release of NOAA’s 2011 Arctic Report. This is not cherry picked data from 2006 or 2007 or from the 1930′s. It is based on historical averages. You can’t refute it. All you can do is post links to Right Wing denier sites.

          Happy Holidays corporate denier.

        8. JoAnne says:

Bill, look at your last links. They are all politically based. Try referencing credible science if you want to be taken seriously on your denier campaign.

        9. Dan says:

Really? You are attempting to stick up for Bill? WOW. I must’ve missed something in reading your posts, JoAnne!
All I ever see you do is come on here and attempt to point out inaccuracies, JoAnne!
If your life is really that sad, I would recommend that you go to another blog and spread your “Christmas cheer” there! Do you only find pleasure in trying to make others look bad?
You don’t have to answer that question. Your posts are evidence enough! They are more than sufficient to determine what kind of person you are JoAnne! Yes, you may be correct in saying that nobody here takes me serious. That is fine with me. Do they take you serious?
By the way, God will judge EVERYBODY. He is no respecter of persons. God said that, I did not. You may look it up.

        10. Bill Steffen says:

JoAnne – I’m sorry, but that is a weak (lazy) response…just dismiss all the sources and that way you don’t have to respond to any of the data and facts that I presented. I linked to the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the NORSEX site from Norway. Those aren’t “political” sites. And do you know of credible scientists that dispute the Accumulated Global Cyclone Energy data/index? It was developed by Dr. Hart and the team at Florida State University, arguably the best university in the world for Tropical Meteorology/Climatology. Check out the website of the National Hurricane Center: They say: “Though there is evidence both for and against the existence of a detectable anthropogenic signal in the tropical cyclone climate record to date, no firm conclusion can be made on this point.
No individual tropical cyclone can be directly attributed to climate change.
The recent increase in societal impact from tropical cyclones has largely been caused by rising concentrations of population and infrastructure in coastal regions.”

Here’s Paul Clark’s site. I like his tag line: “Computers are great tools for helping you think; just never rely on them to do the thinking for you.” Here’s the HADCRUT data since 2002: It’s obvious that temperatures have leveled off. Today (12/26) you’ll find this statement on the BEST website at Berkeley:

Below is a joint statement by Dr. Judith Curry and Dr. Richard Muller:

“In recent days, statements we’ve made to the media and on blogs have been characterized as contradictory. They are not.

We have both said that the global temperature record of the last 13 years shows evidence suggesting that the warming has slowed.”

The data shows that the warming has leveled off since 2002. You can’t dispute that.

Regarding the NOAA climate writer you linked to…

          1) The Antarctic icecap is BIGGER THAN AVERAGE: (link from the National Snow and Ice Data Center)

          2) The Arctic icecap is now bigger than at any time since 2004 in December: (arctic-roos is the Norway ice center, not a political site: The National Snow and Ice Data Center has this on their website today (12/26): “Average ice extent for November 2011 was 10.01 million square kilometers (3.86 million square miles). This was 170,000 square kilometers (66,000 square miles) ABOVE the average for November 2006.

        11. JoAnne says:

You don’t seem to understand how to interpret data. You CHERRY PICK small data sets to attempt to skew the truth. WHY? Well, I guess we all know the reason for that!
When NOAA summarizes their finding with statements like the following:

“Record-setting changes are occurring throughout the Arctic environmental system. Given the projections of continued warming due to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases, it is very likely that these changes will continue in years to come, with increasing climatic, physical, biological, and socioeconomic impacts.”

you take small bits if their information and compare it to recent ups or downs to attempt to prove your point. That’s not science Bill. It’s political.
Your link uses information from NOAA, but you are trying to say that a bump in perennial sea ice is proof that our greenhouse gases haven’t effected the warming of the globe. It’s bad data and can hardly be called science. You really need to learn how to interpret long term data.
This is a direct quote from your link at
“Arctic sea-ice coverage has decreased approx. 8% in the past quarter century, with record- and near record low summer ice in observed recent years. A set of coupled atmosphere–ice–ocean global model simulations quantifies the expected changes in Arctic temperature and sea ice through the twenty-first century. Projected are polar-amplified increases in SAT and reductions in sea ice, with a predominantly ice-free Arctic Ocean in summer projected before the end of this century.”
When you put that direct quote in relation to your ARCTIC SEA IC IS BIGGER THAN AVERAGE quote, you can see that you are full of it. You pulled your information from them, but choose not to link what they have researched, but rather took a bit of their information to build your case. BAD SCIENCE BILL!
          You also stated:
No individual tropical cyclone can be directly attributed to climate change.”
The key in your bad science is the word individual. Who ever said that any one individual event is linked to AGW? A strong case can be made that natural disasters can be related to the increasing Greenhouse gases along with the world’s increasing temperatures. however, you, or quotes you cut and paste, make bold statements like individual which are only used to take away from the big picture.
I will ask you again why we should believe you over NOAA?

Take a look at the link from Arbor Day to see our climate change happening before our eyes. This is a direct result of the shift in global temps. this is right in our backyard Bill. It’s happening and you can’t hide it for the corporations that you represent.

BTW, keep up the name calling Bill, it make you look like a desperate middle schooler slinging mud.

        12. Bill Steffen says:

I have told you and I, hundreds of qualified scientists and the facts disagree with the writer of the statement from NOAA that you quote. I gave you a number of links that show that the alarmist screeching by you and others is not consistent with actual facts and data. Antarctic ice (you don’t talk about that because it obviously doesn’t fit into “THE CAUSE”) is BIGGER than average. There’s NO disputing that fact. That’s a glaring “inconsistent truth” for you alarmists. In the Arctic…the icecap has grown significantly in the past five years. Today it’s bigger than at any 12/26 going back to 2004. I’ve given you links where you can check the icecap on a day-to-day basis. Even your graphs show that global temperature has leveled off since 2002. I have shown you above that the TOTAL number of hurricanes/tropical storms has DECREASED since the mid 1990s and that accumulated tropical cyclone energy is at a relative low. There are fewer, not more tropical storms. I’ve shown you that strong tornadoes DECREASED from the 1970s to 2010. That’s a fact. There are no more tornado disasters than in the past. It’s the same with floods and droughts. The drought of the 1930s were worse than last year by every measure (loss of life, areal extent of the drought). Heat waves were worse in the past (1930s), cold was worse in the past (1899).

I’m a member of the Arbor Day Foundation and have been for 20 years. They rely on donations and will emphasize whatever will bring in those donations. Like many charities, they use selected information and hyperbole to try and pry some money out of your wallet or purse. They do a lot of good work. We have had a small amount of warming, mainly due to natural causes from the early 1980s to 2002. The warming is relatively small compared to natural climate change in the past. Since then temperatures have been steady at the surface and temperatures have cooled in the mid-upper troposphere.

You’re the ones who cherry pick. The Climategate emails prove that (“use Mike’s TRICK to HIDE THE DECLINE”). The infamous “hockey stick” has been thoroughly discredited now. Ray Bradley, A CO-AUTHOR of the hockey stick paper said:
“It may be that Mann et al simply don’t have the long-term trend right. I hedge my bets on whether there were any periods in Medieval times that might have been “warm”, to the irritation of my co-authors!”

        13. JoAnne says:

Why am I under moderation Bill?

        14. Bill Steffen says:

Probably because you included multiple links. It happens to me and everyone else. We’re not just singling out people who claim to work for auto dealerships in Tilbury, Ontario

        15. big Daddy BC says:

So the 5000 emails stolen from scientists, taken out of context, and plastered all over right-wing sites like this one are proof that climate change isn’t real? LOL That’s not science, Bill. It’s political activism. There aren’t hundreds of climatologists or physical meteorologists that disagree with NOAA, NASA, HadRU, the Japanese Met Assn., Berkeley, AccuWeather, the EPA, and the IPCC. Occasionally a biologist or geographer comes out as unconvinced, but that’s not proof, man. That’s anecdotal, at best, and unsupported opinion more often than not. In order to believe in the conspiracy theory, you must believe that Exxon is right and that science is lying, which also requires the belief that fossil fuel corporations that invest in the effort to discredit scientists are doing so to blow the lid off of this conspiracy to raise your taxes. LOL Crazy.

        16. JoAnne says:

Please show me where I made the statement that I work for an auto dealership in Canada! If you can’t, your a liar again. Also show me where I told you to put my personal information on your blog! Again you can’t. Bully

        17. JoAnne says:

The only same old Right Wing talking points! the only one that you are leaving out of that statement are your Cowboy Poetry Festivals.
Don’t you claim to be a scientist of some sort?

        18. Bill Steffen says:

You registered as is the website of an auto dealership in Tilbury, Ontario. I’m sure they wouldn’t want their name connected to a leftist who’s policies would hurt their dealership. It’s NOT your personal information. The information you provided is FALSE.

You want to be stealth because reality would be disappointing to blog readers. Hiding is typical of the far left. Look how the Climategate emails show the conspiracy to break the law regarding the FOIA. In reality, if they were sure of their data, they’d WANT the world to see their methods, their work. But they knew that it would seriously hurt their cause (and funding), so they had to conspire to hide from objective review.

        19. Dan says:

Oh, by the way, JoAnne and Big Daddy think they are right. Big news flash, I know. However, they come on an make several feeble attempts to discredit Bill on his own blog.
They think it is their “cause” However, when asked for there credentials, they resort to name calling and put downs.
One may ask what is the motivation?
Really though, think about for a minute will you.
JoAnne and Big Daddy sense the need to come on to a person’s blog and make attempts to correct him. I would ask a very simple question. This may fly right over the JoAnne and Big Daddy’s heads. Why would they do this? Furthermore, why, when asked to provide their credentials will they not do this?
They have the complete disrespect and bull bullheadedness to do this because they (JoAnne and Big Daddy) don’t have squat!
Go read all of their posts and you decide for yourselves.
Its almost humorous! They attack Bill, then, when challenged they have nothing but a deflection strategy that consists of MORE name calling and insults.
Bill gets called a liar by JoAnne, yet he has provided overwhelming evidence to prove that he is speaking the truth.
She doesn’t like to be told she is wrong so she continues with her name calling.
Big Daddy’s mission is to come on the blog and force feed you HIS OPINION and BS. He claims, he is a critical thinker and that he only asks for data. However, when provided with data and overwhelming amounts of information to disprove his so called opinion, he runs and hides.
JoAnne and Big Daddy, I’m not the Bill’s Blog Police. Bill doesn’t need me to defend him. He makes you two look like the clowns who couldn’t even find their way out of a wet paper bag.
Please, leave the blog. I ask, because, before you two geniuses came to interrupt, we used have great weather dialogue. Now, many don’t post here.
Really, JoAnne and Big Daddy how many people are believing what you post? Maybe 1 other person? It does beg the question, what is your point? Did your mommy not hold you enough? Did you not get your bottle in time?
Why don’t you find some other place to go where you can post your complete BS and your down in the mouth attitudes?
Please consider, it is not Bill’s fault for your own sorry excuses for living.
Thanks very much and have a great day, if you are capable of doing so! I know, I have a suggestion before I finish this post. Maybe, there is a blog you could both post on called “save the rain forest.” You could post as a “couple” since you share so many of the same of opinions!
Run and hide behind your web of lies and deception, it is all you know.

        20. Dan says:

oops, interchanged the correct uses for the words, “there” and “their” in my previous post. They should be switched. Thanks for your attention!

        21. JoAnne says:

Ha ha Bill, so you admit your a liar. You also say that I registered at Also a lie. You go on to say that they wouldn’t want their name associated with a leftist. If that’s true, why do you continually post it? You are a little man with nothing but a big corporate agenda. Bully

        22. JoAnne says:

Dan, you might just want to keep your yapper shut. LOL You sound much smarter when you don’t post!!

        23. Dan says:

No denying what I said, just, “keep your yapper shut”
I’m SOOO impressed, JoAnne. NOT! This quote fits you like a glove. Sometimes it is better to be thought a fool than to post and remove all doubt.
Nothing of substance from you or your boyfriend, Big Daddy, EVER!
Just put downs and name calling. Thanks for proving my points to be valid! Can you do that JoAnne? Can you make a valid point proved with logic? Too much for you I see as is evidenced by your posts. Big Daddy: Your turn to reply. You both never replied about receiving your buttons. This could be fun for you.
Oh yeah, you don’t do fun, just doom and gloom. Duck and Dodge. Run and Hide. That is what you do best! Reality is that sad huh? Well, you can still get your buttons.

        24. Dan says:

Bill: Sounds like JoAnne may just be a little bit jealous of you. She wants what you have. Can you imagine that?
Its ok, JoAnne. You can work and earn some respect! There is help for you.
Really, you can get some help. Big Daddy can help you. He is an expert on HIMSELF only so the resources may be limited.
          Good luck to you.

        25. JoAnne says:

You are really an annoying individual. I am sure that is your goal on here. You only interject with nonsense. I am usually an understanding and compassionate person, but the way you type makes me concerned for people that you share your life with.
You type your entries and hope that someone will respond to you, which almost never happens. I don’t know why I am now, except that I feel sorry for you I guess. Maybe it’s that you come across like an abused spouse looking for attention in anyway possible.

For now on, stop asking so many stupid questions. I hate that word, but it’s the only one that fits you at this point. Let us know if you have anything important to say. If so, I will respond. If not, have a nice life.

Also, I don’t have any idea what buttons you are referring to. I don’t care either, so don’t feel the need to explain.

          Happy Holidays!

        26. Dan says:

Thanks, once again for proving my point, JoAnne!
I had asked why you come on here. You are never able to answer that question except with more put downs and insults. Are we surprised? Also, you have never answered the question as to why you feel it is necessary to launch your lunatic thoughts in attempt to discredit Bill. Some people pride themselves on making malicious attempts to make others look bad. Guess what happens when you do this? Look at your posts, JoAnne!
None the less, you keep continuing to demonstrate what kind of person you are. Really, JoAnne? Is your life really that sad?
By the sounds of your posts, you have Bill envy, you are sad, you are lonely and your reality is one that you don’t want to face! This is not Bill’s fault!
Re read this post and see for yourself. Then, after reading it, go back and look to see all of your posts. Do they measure up to your statements?

“I am usually an understanding and compassionate person, but the way you type makes me concerned for people that you share your life with.
You type your entries and hope that someone will respond to you, which almost never happens. I don’t know why”
Go back and look JoAnne, SERIOUSLY?!
Big Daddy, its your turn. It looks as if JoAnne has nobody else to turn to and by the sounds of it, she doesn’t know what to say anymore. Can you help her?

      2. Bill Steffen says:

The 5,000 Climategate emails were LEAKED, not “stolen”. The guy you quote from Berkeley, Dr. Muller, said that “everyone in the business knows they were leaked”. Someone on the inside saw the fraud, the deceit, the lack of science and blew the whistle. Here’s just one of the emails…from one of the AUTHOR’S of the now-discredited “hockey stick”:

        Hockey stick co-author Ray Bradley:

        “it may be that Mann et al simply don’t have the long-term trend right”;

“I hedge my bets on whether there were any periods in Medieval times that might have been “warm”, to the irritation of my co-authors!”

Gosh an AUTHOR is hedging his bets! How embarrassing to have the truth come out like this. Thank you leaker!!!

Coal is much cleaner, NASA confirms it:

        1. big Daddy BC says:

Leaking, stealing…what’s the difference. You label it leaked to make it sound legal. It’s 5000 emails, man. How could someone just casually leak 5000 emails, most of which had been deleted…which is something we all do to keep our mailboxes at capacity. That means someone got into the hard-drives at the server and lifted the messages. The shame is that despite your stealing these messages, nothing criminal or even questionable has arisen. LOL There’s been NO investigation, NO inquiry, and NO heads have rolled.

You have nothing but an active imagination.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

Regarding the attempt by Dan Rather, Mary Mapes and Bill Burkett to throw a Presidential Election: There’s been NO investigation, NO inquiry, and NO heads have rolled.

The emails were leaked by a member of the team, so disgusted with the manipulation of the data to produce a predetermined political conclusion in order to deceive the public and cause utility bills to skyrocket, that he wanted to show the world in order to keep the lower and middle class from suffering under the burden of skyrocketing utility bills. He/She is a hero! The “team” was breaking the law by not complying with FOIA laws. It sure makes it harder to use “TRICKS” to “HIDE THE DECLINE”.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

That’s because it didn’t happen. The Rove propaganda machine brainwashed its followers into believing so, but that doesn’t make it so. Look away from the light!!!!

Again, in order to access 5000 emails, you’d have to pirate the server’s hard drive. That’s illegal. But, even so, they’ve come up with boo, nothing, diddly-squat. You got zero, zilch, the null set. Out of 5000 stolen emails you’ve produced no smoking gun, no lies, and certainly nothing to support your hypothesis that all the scientists of the world are in a conspiracy to raise your taxes. LOL

        4. Bill Steffen says:

NO ONE thinks those National Guard memos that Dan Rather tried to foist on his audience were real. It’s been completely and thoroughly debunked. How stupid he looked trying to claim that one of the top ten best computers in the world was sitting in a National Guard Office in Cullman, Alabama. LOL!

The Climategate leaker didn’t have to “pirate” the server. It was probably someone who had access to everything and saw the deceit, the manipulation, the fraud. Objective scientists like Dave the Biologist saw the scheme:

He speaks for a lot of scientists now:
          Dave | February 26, 2011 at 11:37 am | Reply

“I also have to agree with Jim West. My firm ‘belief’ in AGW had already been undermined by some extremely bad papers about mosquitoes, arthropod borne disease, and the effect a warmer Earth on wildlife (I am a biologist). But, I assumed these were just opportunists jumping on the gravy train and that the problem was with the journal review process, not AGW.

But the Climategate emails made it all too clear that there was no science at all in ALL these famous papers in Nature and other ‘prestige’ journals. Rather, all the sound and fury appeared to be generated by an unscrupulous cabal eager for grant money, fame, and lots of CO2 generating trips to warm and pleasant spots where they could regurgitate their story to a corrupted press and conniving politicians.

As far as I can tell now, many of the assumptions of AGW appear to be false, nothing that one reads on climate change from Nature to Drudge is reliable.”

If you’re objective check the Climategate emails for yourself, so you can make up your own mind.

        5. big Daddy BC says:

OMG. Dave the no-name biologist again?

You’re a fricken broken record. I guess you just need the last word, even if it’s dumb.

    3. UNCLE SPARKEE says:

the winter coats on the varmits we hunt have not had regular thick coats as in the past. not easy makin coon skin hats for the kin the last 3 years. i think thats a good sign these winters r gettin easier on the critters, which means shes gettin warmer. thats the science that guides us back woods folk.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

…Interesting observation. From the mouths of babes…

      2. Bill Steffen says:

Check this out: Read the article! This guy’s an expert on West Michigan climatology. You haven’t shown that you have so much as a GED. Here’s what this guys says: “July has been trending cooler, not warmer in recent decades. Four of the seven coolest Julys in G.R. have occurred since 1992. All ten of the warmest Julys occurred prior to 1956.” It’s great that we have guys like this who keep track of the local climate record and can easily refute the political comments of a couple of repressive, regressive far-leftists.

        1. big Daddy BC says:

        2. Bill Steffen says:

You are clueless. The global temperature anomaly for July 2013 is -0.437 deg. C. The South Pole may set an ALL-TIME RECORD for ice extent!

  7. Brad (Lawrence) says:

I’m officially 1 mile North of I-94 and we got what I would call a trace. There is more dust on my TV than snow on the ground here. Happy for all of you that got some snow North of us that were hoping for it. Merry Christmas everyone.

  8. ~Sherry~(Comstock Park) says:

Merry Christmas everyone!! So pretty out there this morning!!

  9. Sharon (L'Anse, MI) says:

Merry Christmas Bill’s Bloggers, we only have a dusting here in L’Anse…more in the higher hills around us. I hope you sent Santa a note Bill, and reminded him to oil his landing gear! He’s gonna need the wheels tonight in Michigan.

Side Note: A family we know in Munising, woke up to find a mini-van with a large green bow in their driveway, this morning. This family was badly in need, and are now so blessed. THIS my friends, is what Christmas is all about!
    Merry Christmas!

    1. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

That is very nice about the mini van. I cant wait to get back up to Munising. Good people there in the UP.

  10. Phat says:

Glad to have seen the snow fall last night and wake up this morning to snow on the ground–best thing about it is I’m happy to have snow on my birthday since we probably wont have a white Christmas):

  11. RJ (Rockford) says:

Merry Christmas everyone and Bill we appreciate you making this weather blog available to us. It is nice to have a forum in W. MI that is focused on the weather. Nice call on the clipper INDY. This puts your prediction accuracy up to about 2 out of 100.

  12. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

Have an inch showing on my new snow marker stick in the front yard. An 1 1/2 on the deck rails. Looks nice. I see they did salt the road at some point last nite.

  13. Jesse says:

NWS is mentioning that we could have accumulating snow with the monday night/Tuesday system….is it still a possibility?

    1. RJ (Rockford) says:

Yes, this is still a possibility, however it is still unlikely. It depends on if and when the jet streams merge. Most models show this event to miss us to the Southeast again. If the jet streams merge sooner this will cause the system to strengthen and move in a more Northwesterly direction.

  14. northside of holland says:

    Merry christmas to all :-)

  15. RJ (Rockford) says:

Lets hope that the snow from last night is a small indication of a pattern change coming! While a pattern change is still not imminent, some of the models are starting to show some colder over the next couple weeks. We have been missing this cold air all season!

  16. Bernie (at da lakeshore) says:

The calm before the storm of the century! Keep an eye on the temperatures in Siberia. Sooner or later the cold air will start sinking south and East.

Enjoy this nice weather while we have it and Merry Christmas!

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

      1. UNCLE SPARKEE says:

ol aunty edna and i pulled 2 crazy kayakers out of the river 3 years ago. lucky for them we wernt all lit up on alkyhol and smokeys yet. mighty icy rapids this time of the year.

  18. A little over an inch of snow in Southern Kent County, snowed hard last night here. Will we see any snowfalls around at least 8inches or more this year? because this year has been the dullest year for snowfall ive ever seen. we need a snowstorm like last year, near 20inches!

    1. RJ (Rockford) says:

At this point we need any type of snowstorm. Worst start to winter that we have had in a long, long time!!

  19. Bluewind says:

Merry Christmas to you and your family,Bill! It was great to see the beautiful snow behind my Christmas tree last night. Thanks for keeping our hopes up the past week at a chance for seeing snow,Bill!

  20. Steelie says:

    Good Day,

Well… near Breton and 52nd, the snow is pretty much gone except for the shaded areas…

  21. DanielG says:

I for one appreciate the fact that snowfall has been almost non-existant this late side of 2011. That is sue to the fact that I work outside evening in the rail yard and I do remember the years we had snow up to our ying-yangs and that is NO FUN at all. (like last year for one)
I know the DUMP is coming sooner or later, so be it. But March is 9 weeks away! Gee, I sure do love spring!
    Merry Christmas
    Dano on Myers Lake

  22. Steelie says:

    Good Day,

Looks like the pattern will at least be sticking (no pun intended) for at least another week with high temps in the mid to upper 30s and maybe at or just above 40*.

  23. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

First off Merry Christmas to one and all.
The warm temps and sun has melted most of last nights snow except for the snow that is in the shade on the north side of the house.

Bill has mentioned this year is in uncharted waters but maybe not! Looking at what StormFax claims to have been possible La Nina years

I have found 5 years with much below average snow fall for that season at GR
    They are
    1906/07 with 30.1”
    1908/09 with 35.6”
    1920/21 with 32.5
    1924/25 with 40.4
    1931/32 with 40.9

Of those winter 1906/07 and 1908/09 where cold and I am not so sure about the low snow fall amount for those years

1924/25 was warm in December but cold in January
But the winters of 1920/21 and especially 1931/32 were warm so if Stormfax is correct and the winter of 1931/32 was a La Nina winter there would have been one and maybe two winters in the past with weather some similar to this winter. Note that is if Stormfax is correct in those years being La Nina years.

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Thanks for the info…it’s hard to know what was going on back before we had satellites. Region 3.4 is out over open water where very few boats/people would have been and I doubt any of them were taking water temperatures.

  24. UNCLE SPARKEE says:

eeeeeks, aunty ednas brother just rolled in with his boys lyle and klyd!! lucky edna made extra fixxens for tonight! we are going to eat drink and shoot guns tonight! lost all the snow today, should be great varmit huntin later!!!

  29. Uncle Teddy says:

Merry Christmas! Tuesday storm could be something to watch. We just need a slight shift to the NW! pattern looks like its going to be more active and interesting through the next two weeks with plenty of snow CHANCES shown on the forecast models and maybe some arctic air January 10ish.

  30. RJ (Rockford) says:

It does not get better than this. Christmas Eve, snow on the ground, snow in the forecast and the LIONS IN THE PLAYOFFS! Ya baby!

    1. fixxxer says:

Most of the snow is melted or will be by tomorrow.

      Happy Festivus all.

      1. JoAnne says:

        It’s a Festivus miracle!!

      2. Bill Steffen says:

Whenever I hear that I think of Matt Dillon’s friend on Gunsmoke.

        1. JoAnne says:

That’s Festus, I believe Skot is referring to Seinfeld. An episode showing the insight of George’s family of the Holidays.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

Sorry, I don’t have time to watch prime time while I’m working. I have to keep an eye on the time of football games, so I’m ready when the game ends, but I am the last person to win the prime-time TV category on Jeopardy.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

…might interfere with his FOX NEWS time.

        4. big Daddy BC says:

          Here’s an interesting rating:
