2011 Hurricane Season

December 29th, 2011 at 3:22 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Click on the pictures to enlarge (from Wikipedia, Hurricane paths and Hurricane Irene). The 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season featured an above normal number of tropical storms, a near normal number of significant hurricanes and a below number of tropical storms that significantly impacted land.  While the tornadoes in 2011 tended to strike highly populated areas (Joplin, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Springfield MA), most tropical storms in the Atlantic seemed inclined to mostly avoid land.   None of the hurricanes reached Category 5 (on the Saffir-Simpson Scale).  The lone hurricane to hit the U.S. was Irene (the only hurricane to directly hit the U.S. since 2007 (the longest period without a hurricane hit since the Civil War).   Irene was the first hurricane of the season.  It was preceded by 8 mostly lackluster tropical storms.  Irene briefly reached Category 3 with 120 mph winds, but was only a Category 1 with 85 mph winds when it hit the Outer Banks of N. Carolina.  It continued north to New England as a tropical storm.  Despite the relatively low winds (for a hurricane), Irene caused 10.1 billion dollars in damage (the majority from flooding) and took 55 lives in the Caribbean and the U.S.  I got a couple of tweets last night from the famous hurricane climatologist and West Michigan native, Dr. Ryan Maue.  He says “Tropical cyclone numbers globally for 2010 (#of tropical storms/number of hurricanes/number of major hurricanes): 69 / 39 / 20 vs. 2011 77 / 39 / 21.  Total of 146 global tropical cyclones during past 24-months is fewest in the historical record for a 24-month period since 1970.  Cyclone Thane will impact India — and make a total of 10 hurricane-force global TC landfalls in 2011. That ties 2002 for lowest since 1978.  Out of 77 global tropical cyclones in 2011, 3 made landfall at major strength (96 knots+). Yasi (Oz), Typhoons Nanmadol & Nalgae. 4%.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) to give a measure of the combined number and strength of individual tropical cyclones and entire tropical cyclone seasons.  Click here for full screen ACE graph from Dr. Maue.   It uses an approximation of the energy used by a tropical system over its lifetime and is calculated every six-hour period. The ACE of a season is the sum of the ACEs for each storm and takes into account the number, strength, and duration of all the tropical storms in the season.  As you can clearly see in the graph, tropical cyclone ACE values increased from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s, and have been declining for the past 15 years.  Global accumulated cyclone energy has been near a historic minimum over the last several years.  ALSO, tweet from Joe Bastardi of Weatherbell:  “By the way, La Nina to fall apart by summer, El Nino (weak to mod) likely next winter. El nino after double nina means wild winter 12/13.”   La Ninas generally do weaken in the spring/summer.  I can’t say I know where we will be next winter.  Winters with a neutral to slightly positive El Nino tend to be cold and/or snowy in the Great Lakes.   The coldest back-to-back winters of the 20th century (1976-1979) were preceded by the long La Nina of 1973-1975.  The La Nina year of 1974 (2nd year) brought the famous Super Outbreak of Tornadoes on April 3rd.  Michigan has not had an EF4 rated tornado since 1977 and unfortunately, we are overdue.

Interesting read here Bill! La Nina and El Nino have HUGE effects on the weather globally. Does the La Nina look to be weakening or strengthening?
That Friday system MAY be a bit more potent, huh? Instead of one inch of snow we may get 2 to 3 inches of snow?

  2. Matt says:

    :)

CONFIDENCE IS NOW HIGH IN THE COLD AIR/LAKE EFFECT SNOW POTENTIAL
GIVEN MULTIPLE RUNS BY BOTH THE GFS AND THE ECMWF INDICATING SUCH.
SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY APPEAR TO BE THE PERIODS WITH THE BEST
CHANCES FOR LAKE EFFECT SNOW. THE UPPER TROUGH WILL BE OVERHEAD WITH
SHORTWAVE/S ROTATING THROUGH THE FLOW. INSTABILITY WILL BE HIGH WITH
DELTA T/S IN EXCESS OF 20 DEGREES C. ACCUMULATING LAKE EFFECT SNOW
IS LIKELY FOR LOCATIONS ALONG AND WEST OF U.S. HIGHWAY 131.

LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL CONTINUE IN NORTHWEST FLOW MONDAY NIGHT AND
TUESDAY WITH INSTABILITY REMAINING HIGH…BUT WE WILL BE
TRANSITIONING TO THE ANTICYCLONIC SIDE OF THE UPPER JET AND THE RH
BEGINS TO DIMINISH. SUFFICE IT TO SAY…WESTERN LOWER MICHIGAN WILL
LOOK AND FEEL A BIT MORE LIKE WINTER.

      Woo hoo! :)

      1. Matt says:

About time!! (that was the NWS forecast discussion btw, not my forecast ;)

  3. INDY says:

Sunday should be a cold sight with a big blast of a cool mass I CAN’T WAIT! INDY……

  4. kevin. w says:

Joe Bastardi from acculess really couldn’t get much right in the long range department when he was there. Now he’s with another company called Weatherbell that probably couldn’t do much better either. Hello does anyone here a bell ringing about Joe’s long range forecasts. So who do we trust for the long range when we have a hard time trying to figure out what its going to do the next 7 days out. I think Bill does a pretty decent job on the weather and at least admits it when something doesn’t go right. Thanks Bill just don’t retire completely.

    1. big Daddy BC says:

Bill botched the spring forecast, the summer forecast, the autumn forecast, and is now on his way to botching the winter forecast. He makes jokes about being better at unplugging the toilet than forecasting, so yes he’s honest about that, but a ‘pretty decent job?’ Really?
He’s spends more time generating political rhetoric like this thread, than actually forecasting anything.

      1. INDY says:

Big daddy are u trying to get Bill out of bed today LOL… INDYYY

      2. Bill Steffen says:

I figured you’d chime in with insults. You can’t refute the facts I presented here. You global warming alarmists have been proven wrong over and over again. The poster for Al Gore’s movie showed a hurricane rotating BACKWARDS (LOL): http://www.2012matters.co.uk/images/an_inconvenient_truth_by_al_gore.jpg with the smoke coming out of a (probable) coal-fired power plant. The truth is that hurricanes have not doubled in number and coal is much cleaner than it was even 10 years ago: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/coal-pollution.html Here’s what Reuters had to say about the hype: http://blogs.reuters.com/gregg-easterbrook/2010/08/26/behind-the-hurricane-hype/

Now go to this website: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/cag3/na.html For “period”, select “Winter (Dec. – Feb.) and for “First year to Display” select 2000. You can select other years and values, too. Bottom line…it sure doesn’t look like we have a global warming crisis, and it surely suggests that it would be foolish to force “SKYROCKETING” utility bills on the lower and middle class, especially when that action wouldn’t budge global temperature by 1/10th of a degree. You’re left to spew your lies (like when you said that Romney was a polygamist – that was a lie).

      3. Rumrunner says:

Dude, I myself am a tree hugger, but your dogmatic way of thinking is making you look foolish. The fact that you see his wrap of the cyclone season as a right wing effort to destroy the earth by way of smoke and pollutants is sad.

        1. scott (west olive) says:

          wanna borrow a chainsaw? :)

        2. DR. LAWLESS says:

I destroy the earth by hunting…. fishing…… cutting trees down for heat…….. running over prius owners with my chevy 2500 4×4. my 16 year old drives a 07 hummer!!! this is our land!

        3. JoAnne says:

          Rum,
You need to pay more attention to Bill. As he buries his blogs, his true nature comes out. He is on here to influence people. As people like you buzz through his bags of misinformation you start to believe them. Some people are on here to set those lies straight, so when you see a post from Big Daddy or others pointing these things out, try to remember that Bill has a plan and it is to spread the lies of Big Business for profit ONLY. You should be applauding the people standing up against the corporate media machine rather than knocking them. If you are truly a tree hugger, you would be screaming at Bill rather than backing him.

          Anyway,
Has anyone seen Good old Tom Van Howe at WWMT? I wonder if he departed Wood TV because he was tired of the Right Wing garbage. It’s nice to see some openness and truth behind reporting: Here is Tom’s quote about Newt Gingrich
“How this man who’s somehow made hypocrisy a virtue has gotten this far is a mystery to me, but there he is.
From this corner, I’m Tom Van Howe.”

        4. Rumrunner says:

joAnne! Thanks, Ill take that under advisement. I am a tree hugging, gun toting meat eating fricken American. All I know that you stand for is negativity. There are certain things we need in America, business and the greed that makes the lights come on, the cars run and the damn newspaper show up on your doorstep are kinda like my first wife, fun but ugly.

I’m more of a realist than you are. See, crying foul over what seems to be decent evidence contrary to your beliefs without the opposing evidence does nothing for your cause. Blah blah blah… I don’t even care to type anymore. I could build a time machine, shoot forward a few hundred years and even if it was colder, you would find a way to spin it around. “We missed the heat.” Or some crazy comment.

Oh, and to keep it weather related… Most of my snow melted. I hope that was figured in to the water levels in Florida….

        5. Bill Steffen says:

Gee, Joanne – you’ve even alienated the tree-huggers.

And…another peer-reviewed study out that says much (most) of the warming in S. Korea is UHI (urban heat island): http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=24538066

        6. JoAnne says:

Wrong again Bill. Not alienating anyone. Rumrunner is no tree hugger. Just another one of your minions that are pretending to be on the fence.

        7. Bill Steffen says:

Another comment that shows your arrogance. You either know you’re disruptive and don’t care about others or your high opinion of your own opinion assumes that others will be sooooo impressed by your obvious wisdom that they’ll just be begging for more. “Mirror, mirror, on the wall…who’s the smartest one of all…”

        8. JoAnne says:

The same Tea Party Congress that fought tooth and nail in 2010 for a $700 Billion Dollar unfunded, deficit increasing tax cut for the wealthiest 1% of Americans has decided to raise payroll taxes on middle class workers starting January 1st , 2012. This move will cost the average middle class worker between $700 & $2200 Dollars a year. How does that sit with your skyrocketing utility bill comments Bill. Your right wing party is a bunch of stinking liars. Why isn’t Wood all over this one?

REPUBLICANS SNEAK IN MORE TAXES ON THE MIDDLE CLASS! BIG SHOCKER

I thought you claim that Democrats want to raise taxes. LIARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

        9. Bill Steffen says:

That’s all nonsense. Democrats didn’t want tax rates to go up and kill the economy even more that it has been beaten down in the last 3 years: http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/01/report_card_on_obamas_first_tw.html Those are sorry numbers. Look at the number of young people who are unemployed and underemployed…young people graduating college with tens of thousands of student loans and struggling to find a job. You don’t help the economy by raising taxes on anybody. Here’s someone who can give you a ECON 101 lesson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEdXrfIMdiU

        10. big Daddy BC says:

Then why support a governor that raised our taxes by 86% as one his first actions in office? You make no sense.

        11. Bill Steffen says:

OK, how many of you blog readers had your taxes go up 86% last year? Anyone? It’s nonsense. The unemployment rate skyrocketed in Michigan under Granholm…from LESS than the national average to WORST of ALL the 50 states: http://www.bls.gov/eag/eag.mi.htm (click the dinosaur for back data).

Democrats and Independents like the new tax structure. Check this out: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Michigan-comes-in-No-2-in-apf-3031831743.html The experts are predicting improvement: http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/michigan-to-add-77000-jobs-over-next-2-years-university-of-michigan-economists-project/

This is what DEMOCRAT (and former Speaker of the Michigan House) Andy Dillon said about the new Michigan State tax structure (from Mlive): Andy Dillon said the state’s new tax structure “ is simple, fair and efficient and gives Michigan businesses a clear picture of their tax liability.”

        12. big Daddy BC says:

Hey, numbskull, Snyder’s plan took effect this year. You won’t feel it until you file your income tax returns. Bill, you’re a liar for saying otherwise. Snyder set 100,000 corporations like WOOD TV free from paying taxes in this state. Bill’s lying because he works for a corporation that benefits from Snyder’s fascist policies. Anyone that follows this blog knows that Bill has been Snyder’s number one fan. He supported the bully law that targeted homosexual children. He supported the increase in taxes on pensions. He supported all of the attacks on public schools. He’s anti union and regularly bashes labor on here. In fact, this weatherman is so far right that he has repeatedly characterized those in the democratic part as NAZIs.

        13. Bill Steffen says:

LOL – you’re losin’ it bigD – nothing but insults and lies. Snyder signed the (anti-)bullying law. Business was doing worse in Michigan compared to neighboring states (compare Michigan and Indiana) and worse than practically every other state because Michigan had higher taxes, more complicated taxes and more uncertainty. With a simpler, fairer tax in place, businesses had a sense of what to expect in the future. Michigan’s unemployment rate is dropping faster than any other state but North Dakota, where there is an oil boom underway. How many Democrat businessmen and women can you find that will say they were happy with the old Michigan Business Tax and didn’t want to see any changes. Not many, I can assure you.

  5. Bernie (at da lakeshore) says:

I see a repeat of last years tornado season. The snowpack in Flagstaff Arizona will trigger disturbances again when the nearby desert heats up in March and April. And that will lead to long track tornados like the ones that hit Tuscaloosa and Joplin.

Hopefully more people in tornado alley think about their storm shelters before spring.A foxhole would be far safer than a bathtub in a doublewide!

    1. Brad says:

Bernie, do you have a source that indicates snowpack in Arizona causes tornadoes in Alabama?

      1. Bernie (at da lakeshore) says:

        Do I need one…?
Bill recently posted a map of snow cover in the USA!

Bill getting some lght. snow out at the YARDofBRICKS temp is 29* ….INDY!!

  7. Rumrunner says:

Hey, how far back does this data go? I may have missed it in the post.

    1. Mike M. says:

      Which data? Landfalls or ACE?

      1. Rumrunner says:

No. How far back the references to historical data are. I think it said 1970. No biggie.

  8. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Here just north of Bay City we are getting light snow, with the temp now at 26° have around 1/2 inch of new snow but now everything is covered as the ground and roads are now cold. We will visiting some old friends for lunch and then will be heading back toward GR later today.

Welcome to the east side slim! Doesn’t look like much snow today, the highways should be fine later.

  9. Chuck R. in Paw Paw says:

Is it just me, or are any of the bloggers not aware that we are under a Advisory for freezing precip until 1? Otherwise, back to the hurricane portion of this thread.

    1. pink says:

Chuck some bloggers have a little game called put downs going on the blogg I don’t think they can read. Advisory has to be a first for Kent county this winter ….

Bill so cool to see snow falling out of the sky in West Michigan just a start of fun to come for us!!!!! INDYY

    1. Hummer13 says:

Snow flakes were huge in Kentwood this morning, our kitty has never seen snow like this and he was going crazy!!! It was great!

  12. Nathan A. says:

How much LE snow should Forest Hills get this Monday? We are along us 131, and we always get LE snow, but I don’t know if it will miss us this time.

  13. Steve G says:

Good post Bill — in my opinion this does refute predictions of increased tropical cyclone activity due to climate change in the short term. Your source (policlimate.com) is obviously a politically biased collection of tripe, but there are plenty of non-biased sources out there that would agree. However the consensus of the scientific community seems to be focused more on the long term effects of climate change on tropical cyclones. Dr. Jeff Masters posted a fairly even handed discussion on the subject (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1776):

“We only have about 30 years of reliable global tropical cyclone data, and tropical cyclones are subject to large natural variations in numbers and intensities. Thus, it will be very difficult at present to prove that climate change is affecting global tropical cyclone activity. (This is less so in the Atlantic, where we have a longer reliable data record to work with.) A common theme of many recent publications on the future of tropical cyclones globally in a warming climate is that the total number of these storms will decrease, but the strongest storms will get stronger. For example, a 2010 review paper published in Nature Geosciences concluded: “greenhouse warming will cause the globally averaged intensity of tropical cyclones to shift towards stronger storms, with intensity increases of 2 – 11% by 2100. Existing modeling studies also consistently project decreases in the globally averaged frequency of tropical cyclones, by 6 – 34%. Balanced against this, higher resolution modeling studies typically project substantial increases in the frequency of the most intense cyclones, and increases of the order of 20% in the precipitation rate within 100 km of the storm centre.” Last year, I discussed a paper by Bender et al that concluded that the total number of Atlantic hurricanes is expected to decrease by the end of the century, but there could be an increase of 81% in the number of Category 4 and 5 storms. The net effect of a decrease in total number of hurricanes but an increase in the strongest hurricanes should cause an increase in U.S. hurricane damages of about 30% by the end of the century, the authors computed, assuming that hurricane damages behave as they did during the past century. A new paper just published by Murakami et. al predicts that Western Pacific tropical cyclones may decrease in number by 23% by the end of the century, primarily due to a shift in the formation location and tracks of these storms.”

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Steve – policlimate is NOT a political website. No one that I know disagrees with the data presented, which was developed by Dr. Hart’s team of scientists at Florida State University. If you can find credible scientists that disagree with the website, please point me to them. I lost respect for Dr. Masters when he started blaming individual storms on global warming without citing the current La Nina as being a cause. THAT was political, because he knew better. The warmingistas had to “adjust” their message because the number and intensity of hurricanes was obviously contrary to their predictions. Dr. Chris Landsea, the Operations and Science officer for the National Hurricane Center, has said that CO2 warming might increase the intensity of hurricanes “by one or two percent”. That’s hardly worth doubling everyone’s utility bills.

I said years ago that the global warming hypers were making a big mistake with hurricanes. Hurricanes are the Earth’s mechanism for moving heat from the tropics toward the Poles (esp. the North Pole). The hypers said that the Poles would warm more and faster than the Equator (this would make sense…the tropics are much bigger than the Poles…and Equatorial regions are mostly ocean…it takes a long time to heat and cool water. Put a garbage can full of water on the stove and see now long it takes to heat up). But since the Poles would warm more than the tropics, that would minimize the temperature difference from Pole to Equator. That should minimize the need to redistribute heat to the Poles. It would also weaken the overall upper level winds (jet stream). But to sell their tale, they had to create these nightmare scenarios of more hurricanes and bigger hurricanes. The experts refuted that then and reality is refuting that now. We are certainly not getting more Category 5 storms (look at what’s happened since 2005).

The following is up on the website of the National Hurricane Center right now: “Though there is evidence both for and against the existence of a detectable anthropogenic signal in the tropical cyclone climate record to date, NO firm conclusion can be made on this point. No individual tropical cyclone can be directly attributed to climate change. The recent increase in societal impact from tropical cyclones has largely been caused by rising concentrations of population and infrastructure in coastal regions.”

      1. Brad says:

Bill, cripes, policlimate is absolutely a political site. It’s called “policlimate” for a reason, and one of the tabs is “liberal media climate.” Sheesh!

        1. Bill Steffen says:

The data isn’t political. Everyone (inc. the Hurricane Center) uses the ACE index. The data isn’t being manipulated by Florida State or Dr. Maue. It’s being manipulated by those who would “use Mike’s TRICK to HIDE THE DECLINE” or the now thoroughly debunked “hockey stick”. You’ve seen the ACE Index or you can go to the website of the National Hurricane Center or you can look at the hurricane seasons year-by-year at Wikipedia. Total accumulated tropical cyclone energy has decreased since the mid 1990s. The leading experts on hurricanes (Dr. Gray, Dr. Hart, Dr. Landsea) have all refuted the hurricane hype. Dr. Gray was(maybe still is) a Democrat (though he said he couldn’t vote for Al Gore). He’s been a giant in the field of hurricane climatology for several decades. He’s been the #1 expert on network newscasts for years. To see him trashed…very personal and vicious attacks…is shameful.

        2. Hummer13 says:

What do you think Rumrunner and Toro?

        3. JoAnne says:

Here is a direct quote from a recent post on policlimate:

“Both Obama and the media were hoping for a disaster to revive his presidency”

NAH, that’s not a right wing political site Bill. You’re right again. goodness
Everything that you post is political Bill. Time to come out of the denier closet!

        4. big Daddy BC says:

That’s funny, Joanne. Rush Limbaugh said that black was white the other day. It was an entirely non political thing to say and so you can trust it.

“No individual tropical cyclone can be directly attributed to climate change” No kidding. What are the odds that you’ll ever look at a single meteorological event and say, “That had to have been caused by climate change”? Seriously, man. Natural climate variability can explain almost any individual event. It’s the trend over time that’s significant. National Geographic reports about 2010 that, “The 2010 season produced 19 named tropical storms, tying this season with 1995 and 1887 for the third-most active since record-keeping began.” If the Pacific hadn’t been so passive, 2010 would have thrown a monkey wrench in Limbaugh’s boy’s graphic. 2011 wasn’t much different. It had another 19 named tropical storms, again, tying that record.

And in case no one caught it, this entire thread was bait. I should never have bit. My bad.

        5. Bill Steffen says:

As I said, JoAnne, the data isn’t political. The NWS uses the ACE index and you can’t find a credible scientist who will say it’s politically doctored. Most scientists are not far-leftists, but most blog commentators who sign up with phony email addresses are far-leftists.

        6. Bill Steffen says:

Do you not care what every hurricane expert says, bigD? We are naming more storms now because we have satellites and airplane recon. We see tropical storms that we never saw before, and with constant recon., we name tropical storms that may only be tropical storms for a few hours. We never saw these storms before the satellite/recon. era. I’ve provided quotes from the National Hurricane Center and other experts. That’s why we all use the ACE index! It’s a much better way to measure global tropical storm frequency/intensity. The U.S. has had only one hurricane hit since Sept. 2007 – the stretch from 2007 to 2011 (Irene – and that was barely a hurricane when it brushed the Outer Banks) was the longest stretch without a hurricane since the Civil War!

Now…you better hope this isn’t right: https://twitter.com/#!/BigJoeBastardi/status/152577443230789633/photo/1 This would certainly set us up for a cool summer and a colder winter next year.

        7. big Daddy BC says:

Bastardi couldn’t predict a rainstorm in a rainstorm.

Your laughable assumption that NOAA’s making that claim without considering our newfound ability to identify previously undetectable storms (LOL) is weak. NOAA wouldn’t bother to keep the record if we hadn’t been ID-ing those storms since WWII. Sorry, Pal. That’s a complete fabrication. You cannot discount the energy required to produce a storm based on our previous inability to measure it. I have a feeling that’s how Rush Limbaugh’s boy, Dr. Maue put that graph together.
Fact is, 2010 and 2011 are tied for the third-most tropical storms ever in the Atlantic. Overall activity remains average because of a calmer than normal Pacific. Try again.

And btw, YOU don’t use the ACE index for anything. Please stop pretending to be a physical meteorologist. You’re a broadcast meteorologist, or more specifically, a blog-cast meteorologist. Give me a break.

        8. Bill Steffen says:

Read this article, Pinocchio: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/background_information.shtml It says: “The measure of total seasonal activity used by NOAA is called the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index.”

This is what the National Hurricane Center says (up on their website today): “Though there is evidence both for and against the existence of a detectable anthropogenic signal in the tropical cyclone climate record to date, no firm conclusion can be made on this point.

The recent increase in societal impact from tropical cyclones has largely been caused by rising concentrations of population and infrastructure in coastal regions.”

“NO FIRM CONCLUSION”, Pinocchio. It’s certainly not enough evidence to force utility bills to skyrocket on the poor and middle class.

        9. big Daddy BC says:

No one is suggesting that due to a link between climate change and an increased strength of hurricanes we should raise the utility bills. That doesn’t even make sense, Bill. Calm down.

        10. Bill Steffen says:

Accumulated tropical cyclone energy is near a historic LOW: http://coaps.fsu.edu/~maue/tropical/global_running_ace.jpg

        11. big Daddy BC says:

Maue is a featured contributor on Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh’s face is on Maue’s website. We don’t trust Limbaugh employees. He also posts all over the right-wing blogosphere. He’s an activist. We don’t trust activists. How about coming up with a real scientist for a change?

        12. Bill Steffen says:

You said Maue was a “regular” on the Rush Limbaugh Show. I asked you to prove it. You didn’t. I asked you to prove that Maue has spoken even one word on Rush Limbaugh’s Show. You didn’t. You’re not only an activist, but a proven liar. You lied when you said Romney was a polygamist. You lied when you said Romney was an abortionist. You lied when said WOOD-TV paid no taxes.

Speaking of scientists… This is what Dr. Judith Curry said recently about how global warming has stopped. She’s part of the BEST group that YOU have linked to: “There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.”

  16. Nathan A. says:

Bill, what do you mean by 90% chance of snow? Is it over the entire area, just for GR, or the chance of lake effect?

  17. Rumrunner says:

Nathan, he usually means for the viewing area.

Come on guys get your heads out of the hole and get with dam progam. I think the guys over at the grand rapids office play more hype with weather than what really happens. I really don’t trust them for s#$%^.

  27. Jevon Murphy (Chicago) says:

Just took a look at the 18z GFS and the 18z NAM and they both agree on the cold air that is to come in for early next week and highs look to be in the low-mid 20s, at least for now!

Also, the 18z GFS is hinting at more arctic blasts in the days to come, so maybe, just maybe winter is knocking on our door step and has finally arrived! We’ll see! I hope its here however, I’ve been waiting!

Bill…Did you see that in the long term?
Also, I am going to the Lions/Packers game, can’t wait its going to be an exciting game!

I see 50s and rain for the weekend of Jan 8 on the long term GFS from this morning, and that is supposed to be my ski weekend.

  28. Jevon Murphy (Chicago) says:

Yeah, Matt I saw that that would be, what looks to be an ice changing to snowstorm. That would be an interesting storm if it played out!

    1. Matt says:

That’s what I was thinking too, if the next runs continue to indicate that area of low Pressure with similar track and strength, it should be the first system to really keep an eye on! :D But I won’t give my hopes up too soon!!!

For anyone following Michigan politics, Snyder’s most recent numbers just came out. He’s fallen into the teens now and is the least popular governor in the entire USA.

        Hahahahaha

      2. JoAnne says:

You better hope not. If Snyder/Bill Steffen has their party’s way, you will be in line for unemployment in that snow.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

The unemployment rate the last month that Granholm was in office was 11.1%. The employment rate today is 9.8%. Michigan is doing better than other states: http://www.hollandsentinel.com/mobileeditorspicks/x167855941/Bloomberg-Michigan-No-2-in-growth

Boehner more popular than Pelosi: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/congressional_favorability_ratings

        2. big Daddy BC says:

That’s in part to the 1% of unemployed Michiganders that fleed the sinking ship in the last year. Unemployment went up during most of the last year. During Granholm’s last year in office, unemployment went down every single month. Snyder’s managed to insulate us against the national recovery.

His numbers are down in the teens now. LOL

Glad you brought up congress. The Boehner-led, obstructionist, teabagger congress has numbers even lower than Snyder 10-14%. Have a look,
          http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm

The country has figured out that a corporate coup has taken place. The GOP strategy to disable economic recovery until the next election cycle is back firing. :)

Michigan lost it’s population under Granholm, Pinocchio: http://www.hollandsentinel.com/news/x1682028879/Census-Michigan-loses-population-congressional-seat The link is from Dec. 2010, before Snyder took office to clean up the 1.5 BILLION dollar deficit that Granholm left him. He took unemployment down from 11.1% to 9.8% in his first year in office.

African-Americans agree with him on school choice: http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2011/09/jalen_rose_to_michigan_lawmake.html You regressives want no choice for inner city kids.

        4. big Daddy BC says:

Of course it’s dated from 2010. IT’S YOUR LINK, MAGOO! Just because lots of people fled the manufacturing state during the Bush years doesn’t mean they aren’t still fleeing. .1% of this state fled between April and July of last year. That’s almost 10,000 people! This governor is the least popular governor in the country with numbers only in the high teens. http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2011/12/gov_snyders_popularity_continu.html Middle class citizens feel hopeless about our future. The jobs aren’t returning like Snyder promised, not even close. He’s increased our taxes, decreased our rights, and grown government exponentially. Why would any recent college grad want to stay?

        5. Bill Steffen says:

Unemployment rate the last month Granholm was in office: 11.1%. Unemployment today (one year after Snyder took office on 1/1/11): 9.8%. The decrease is among the best of all the 50 states (or is it 57 states…that’s what Obama said). University of Michigan economists are optimistic about the state. Bloomberg rates it #2 in the country for growth! http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Michigan-comes-in-No-2-in-apf-3031831743.html more optimism about the Michigan economy: http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2011/12/west_michigan_economic_forecas.html

        7. Bill Steffen says:

YOU called Romney a polygamist. He’s NOT a polygamist. You are a LIAR! You bore false witness. You’re a liar!

        8. big Daddy BC says:

All mormons believe in the Law of Polygamy. You’re a liar! You said we weren’t at war. You said Paul was lawyer. You said you were a scientist. Liar, Liar, Liar! LOL Keep trying, hypocrite. ;)

        9. Bill Steffen says:

I see you’re out of ammunition, bigD. I am a scientist, degreed and successfully practicing for over 35 years. Paul is a lawyer (and on an extended vacation in a warm and pleasant spot right now). I wouldn’t call what’s going on now a “war”…my opinion. Romney is not a polygamist as you claimed. He is also not an abortionist. The Mormon Church banned polygamy in the 19th century and those who practice it have been excommunicated.

Romney up on Obama in the swing state of Virginia: http://www.cnu.edu/cpp/pdf/Survey_Report_Feb_20_2012.pdf

      3. big Daddy BC says:

Here are Boner’s right-wing congressional numbers:

        http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm

Their numbers are even lower than Snyder’s, 86% DISAPPROVAL RATING! lol The teabag right is a sinking ship. Obama will easily defeat Newt or the abortionist, Romney.

BIG SHOCKER

Holy lies Bill. The public is onto you

        2. Bill Steffen says:

YOU’RE the liar, JoAnne – or whomever you are. You registered under a phony email address and if I were Lakeshore Auto in Tilbury, Ontario, I’d think seriously about suing you. I’m sure an auto dealership wouldn’t want to be associated with a job-killing leftist. Anyone with any sense can see that you’re 15.1 TRILLION DOLLAR deficit is going to bankrupt our country. And you just want more taxes, more regulations and SKYROCKETING utility bills on the poor and middle class. You are selfish, greedy and your kind need to be thoroughly defeated.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

I feel sorry for Joanne. You immediately posted her email for the world as soon as she disagreed with your rightest views. It was only later that you discovered she didn’t use that one any more. I remember the whole fiasco and so do all the regulars. Calling her names and then threatening to sue her is over the top. You’re completely unprofessional. Take it down a notch, angry man.

Here’s what your GOP tax cuts are doing to the debt:

          http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/25/the-bush-tax-cuts-and-the-deficit/

        4. Bill Steffen says:

It isn’t her email, Pinocchio. You know that and you’re a LIAR to say that when you know it isn’t true. She posted a PHONY email address. It could be anything from the fact that she has outstanding warrants to the fact that she thinks she can create a persona better than reality by being stealth. In any case…she’s not connected to Lakeshore Auto in Tilbury, Ontario. We don’t know if she’s even employed. But we do know that YOU are a LIAR, bigDaddy. You said that Romney was a polygamist. He’s not and you lied.

        5. JoAnne says:

You are nuts Bill. Must be the older men get the more crazy they become. Tell me how many emails you check and how many are not true emails? Nothing but lies out of you. I wouldn’t believe a damn thing you say and your anti right wing readers won’t either.

        6. JoAnne says:

I also NEVER said I was with Lake Shore Auto in Canada. You lied again. Show me where I ever said that and I will post you my real emial you creep. Maybe they should sue you!

        7. Bill Steffen says:

You registered to comment as Joanne from lakeshoreauto.com. lakeshoreauto.com is a dealership in Tilbury, Ontario. They don’t know you and I’m sure that lakeshoreauto.com doesn’t want an anti-business, anti-profit leftist who wants energy prices to skyrocket lying about an association with them. Why can’t you leftists be honest. You’ve got bigDaddy telling everyone Romney is a polygamist. You’ve got the Climategate Scandal (“Use Mike’s TRICK to HIDE THE DECLINE”)

Now here’s another dishonest alarmist leftist who got caught: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/02/20/breaking-gleick-confesses/

    2. David(Ashley) says:

One heck of a weather related comment. Did that come from a Harvard degree just like your idol has? Oh that’s right no one can find that degree either. Maybe we can keep it weather related its more fun that way.

    3. JoAnne says:

Nice survey Daddy. It would be interesting to take that same survey on Bill’s Blog! I bet it would be just the opposite of reality in here!

    4. Rumrunner says:

Least reliable survey ever. You have to be kidding me. Put some numbers up pal. How many were surveyed? 100? 1000? Where from? I dont like him either, but if you are gonna plow him into the ground, toss up some real data…

      1. big Daddy BC says:

Here’s how the American public feels about the teabag congress under Boehner:

        http://www.pollingreport.com/CongJob.htm

        86% DISAPPROVAL
The GOP strategy to stall economic recovery has back fired.

Boehner more popular than Pelosi or Reid: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/congressional_favorability_ratings

Support for Obamacare at an all-time low: http://dailycaller.com/2011/10/28/poll-obamacare-support-hits-all-time-low/ (the vast majority want medical decisions made by you and your doctor, not some bureaucrat in Washington D.C.).

        2. big Daddy BC says:

Rasmussen is a right-wing hack. The GOP has an 86% disapproval rating per the polling report I linked above. When will you hypocrites learn that the American public wants to move forward not back?

        3. Bill Steffen says:

The poll you cited is for all of Congress, not Republicans. John Boehner has a higher favorability rating than either Pelosi or Reid: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/congressional_favorability_ratings

Here’s another poll you won’t like: http://www.gallup.com/poll/126560/americans-global-warming-concerns-continue-drop.aspx Support for global warming alarmism continues to drop. Even scientists you have cited in the past are bailing out. This is what Dr. Judith Curry of the BEST group said recently: “There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.”

      2. big Daddy BC says:

…And Rasmussen is a right-wing hack that loads his questions. In the 90s, he worked for the World Net Daily, one of the heavily financed, right-wing organizations that regularly attacked the Clintons? Why is every site you link biased?

        1. Bill Steffen says:

OK, here’s one by PPP (that’s a DEMOCRATIC polling company, Pinocchio): http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2011/PPP_Release_National_1220925.pdf LOL!

        2. JoAnne says:

Bad time for the REPUBLICAN CONGRESS to raise the taxes on the middle class. It will be the nail in your coffin

        3. Bill Steffen says:

The Democrats control the Senate and the White House. All the House is now is a brake on the madness…a 15.1 TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT…while the Pres. is on another vacation…17 days in Hawaii…cost to taxpayers over 4 million dollars. Bush got reamed by the press when he went to Camp David for a weekend. You’re the one’s who want to raise taxes and spend it on stuff like Solyndra, Cowboy Poetry Festivals, Bed Sheet Police and snow cone machines for Montcalm County. You young people who read the blog…these leftists are destroying your future…giving you the bill for their useless pork projects. BigDaddy is a proven liar…don’t believe what he says. He’s a greedy, self-serving liar.

        4. big Daddy BC says:

Wow, put the martini down, Bill. You’re sounding more and more like someone’s angry drunk uncle. I can hardly believe how increasingly unprofessional you sound. Call me all the names you want, but anyone with a brain can check the facts. The people you prey on are the base. Most young people are rightfully skeptical of old white men who promote corporations over people, money over our environment, and radical conspiracy theories over common sense. You’re out of touch, angry, and incredibly transparent.

Here’s what those tax cuts for rich people are doing to our debt:
          http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/25/the-bush-tax-cuts-and-the-deficit/

        5. Bill Steffen says:

Even Democrats know that raising taxes in the middle of an economic downturn is bad policy. Listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEdXrfIMdiU

Democrat Andy Dillon said the state’s new tax structure “ is simple, fair and efficient and gives Michigan businesses a clear picture of their tax liability.” And Bloomberg now ranks Michigan the #2 state for economic recovery: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-11-02/michigan-surpassing-48-states-shows-autos-drive-u-s-recovery.html

Moderate Democrats and Independents agree with me. Only those of you on the far left could applaud a massive tax increase in a recession. All for you silly pet pork projects. That’s why you took such a hit in the last election.

        6. big Daddy BC says:

Snyder raised taxes as soon as he took office and you supported it. I agree it’s stupid and have been saying it since January. You’re a complete hypocrite. All you bring to the discussion is talking points you’ve stolen from the GOP website.

  30. Nathan A. says:

Bill, is it hard to get a job at the GR national weather service? That would be fun. I would like to get a job at storm team 8, but there are very few openings. Hopefully by the time I can get a job we don’t have robots as meteorologists! That is one bad thing about the future, but hopefully not!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

This is a great area for weather. We get it all…tornado warnings, blizzard warnings, local climates (lakeshore/inland). The National Weather Service office here is one of the best. Fortunately, WOOD is number 1 in the market for news/weather/sports and has been for a long time. Universities are turning out more meteorologists today than there are jobs to fill. But, many do find jobs, good ones. I tell kids if you’re going to do a job for 40 hours or more a week for 40 years of your life, pick something that will be fun for you to do. You’ll spend more time doing your job than you will spend awake with your spouse.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

So it’s a good profession for those that don’t like their spouses?

Nathan’s a good example of what’s happening to Michigan college grads and why so many are leaving the state. Where are all those jobs Snyder promised?

        1. David(Ashley) says:

40 hours a week means you don’t like your spouse? Wow thought it was just considered full time work.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

“You’ll spend more time doing your job than you will spend awake with your spouse.”

Just thought that was an interesting way of putting it.

        3. Nathan A. says:

You do understand that his point is not about the spouse, but about the jobs! Anyways, thanks Bill…. I will look into that. Maybe, if you still work at storm team eight by the time I want to join, you will find me very impressive! And how many people on this blog are meteorologists? I know Indy isn’t, probably not Fixxxer, maybe Martin?

        4. Bill Steffen says:

Unemployment rate in Dec. 2010, the last month Granholm was in office: 11.1% Unemployment in Michigan today: 9.8%. Michigan has come down more than almost any other state. Bureau of Labor statistics. Michigan is #2 now in economic growth: http://www.hollandsentinel.com/mobileeditorspicks/x167855941/Bloomberg-Michigan-No-2-in-growth It wasn’t like that until Snyder took over.

        5. JoAnne says:

So bill, you must like that the Tea Baggers just raised our taxes.

        6. big Daddy BC says:

Lies, lies, lies, Bill. Shame on you.
Unemployment went down every single month of 2010 right into 2011 when Snyder’s plan went into effect. Unemployment then started to go UP. It only recently decreased (slightly), but not because of Snyder’s tax breaks for the rich. It went down for two reasons, first, holiday hiring, and second, 1% of Michiganders LEFT THE STATE in 2011. How many were unemployed do you think? LOL Snyder’s done nothing but pad the pockets of rich weathermen and oil tycoons.

        7. Bill Steffen says:

You’re the LIAR, Pinocchio. You said that Romney was a polygamist. He’s not…but YOU’RE A LIAR!!!!!! Unemployment in Michigan Dec. 2010 (the last month Granholm was in office) was 11.1%. Unemployment in Michigan today is down to 9.8%. It’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pinocchio! Everyone from the University of Michigan Economic Team to Democrats like Andy Dillon are sayin’ good things about Snyder’s plan.

You’re a liar, Pinocchio and you can’t hide from facts and data! Regressive, repressive leftists!

        8. big Daddy BC says:

          http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,254362,00.html

Read the story, Bill, or keep insisting I’m a liar (a lie itself)! All Mormon’s believe in the Law of Polygamy!

I realize he’s your pick, but own up. The guy’s an abortionist who believes in socialized medicine and gun control. And you call yourself a Catholic?

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/10/mitt-romney-supported-sta_n_1086345.html

        9. Bill Steffen says:

WRONG PINOCCHIO! You specifically called Romney a polygamist. He is NOT a polygamist. You are a LIAR! A two-faced false-witness bearing LIAR!

        10. big Daddy BC says:

Exactly what do you think you’re accomplishing by constantly bringing polygamy into the discussion? Most Americans understand that Mormons believe in the Law of Polygamy. I don’t think it’s going to hurt him in the booth. What’ll hurt him is his record on gun control, abortion, socialized medicine, and gay marriage.

Calling me names only makes you look angry and beaten. Keep on, Magoo. LOL

        11. Bill Steffen says:

Most Americans DON’T understand that Mormons believe the “The Law of Polygamy”. Most Americans and blog-readers don’t give a rip! The facts are you said that Romney was a polygamist. He is NOT a polygamist. The Mormon Church banned polygamy in the 19th century and those few who practiced it have been excommunicated.

Must be a bummer to put so much of yourself into pushing the global warming agenda Kevin, only to finally be crushed by the mounting evidence. Hurricanes AREN’T increasing in number or intensity, the icecaps are NOT disappearing, the earth WAS warming but it isn’t anymore.

The more obvious the truth is, the more shrill, frantic and desperate the attempt is to convince people otherwise.

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

By the way, this isn’t directed at kevin w. This is for the Bill’s Blog stalker formerly known as Kevin, now known as JoAnne, Fat Momma BC, et al.

    2. big Daddy BC says:

Must be a bummer, michael, to be so foolish to believe the right-wing rhetoric Bill Steffen vomits up on this blog. Do you truly believe that the world’s scientists are in cahoots with liberals to raise your taxes? Do you really think that HadRU, NOAA, NASA, AccuWeather, the EPA, The National Hurricane Center, the Japanese Meteorological Assn., Berkeley, and the World Meteorological Assn. have conspired to lie to you? Maue is a Limbaugh crony, the icecaps are down 66% by volume (http://psc.apl.washington.edu/wordpress/research/projects/arctic-sea-ice-volume-anomaly/), and temps are continuing to rise (http://apps.edf.org/content_images/graph-world-global-temp-datasets.jpg). Have you been outside in a while, slick? I’m joking, of course.
Listen, I know when you’ve sipped the Kool-Aide and are philosophically aligned with a particular ideology, that it’s difficult to see the truth right in front of your eyes. You deniers are almost cultish in your dog-like worship of money and those who have it. It’s a pity that you lack the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate data and trends.
A baby step might be to review some literature that hasn’t been politically contrived.

BTW, I don’t know who Kevin is, but he sounds like a stand-up guy. What happened to him?

      1. Bill Steffen says:

Antarctic icecap – bigger than average and bigger than last year: http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/S_timeseries.png

Arctic icecap – significantly bigger than last year: http://arctic-roos.org/observations/satellite-data/sea-ice/observation_images/ssmi1_ice_area.png The National Snow and Ice Data Center says: “Average ice extent for November 2011 was 10.01 million square kilometers (3.86 million square miles). This was 170,000 square kilometers (66,000 square miles) above the average for November 2006.” In five years, the icecap has grown by more than the size of the state of Wisconsin. Your link is just a model programmed by warming alarmists and is outdated and inconsistent with today’s data.

The Japanese Meteorological Assn. long-range models says the Earth is cooling: http://t.co/Nq97cDCx Global temperatures have been flat for almost 10 years now: http://www.woodfortrees.org/graph/hadsst2gl/from:1998/plot/hadsst2gl/from:1998/trend The BEST group from Berkeley that you keep linking to has said the same thing.

And an interesting article for you to read: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203413304577088270404438882.html

        1. big Daddy BC says:

The Japanese Meteorological Agency just released their data for 2011. Bastardi’s full of it. Your link doesn’t even go to the JMA. Here’s their take on climate change:

“The average temperature over land alone is +0.20°C above the 1981-2010 average, most likely to become the ninth warmest record since 1891.
The 13 warmest years on record have all occurred in the past 15 years. The recent high temperatures are thought to be explained by the combined effect of the global warming trend due to increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations including carbon dioxide, and decadal natural fluctuations. On a shorter time scale, the La Niña conditions in the equatorial Pacific has very likely contributed to the cooling down of the 2011 global temperature as compared with that of the previous year.”

Do you suppose they’re also in cahoots with Al Gore to raise your taxes? LOL

Have a look for yourself. Beware, it hasn’t been interpreted politically.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

WOW! O MY! UNBELIEVABLE!! THIS YEAR WILL BE 0.08 DEGREE WARMER THAN AVERAGE!! LESS THAN 1/10TH DEGREE WARMER THAN AVERAGE!! PAH-LEEZE MAKE MY UTILITY BILLS ‘SKYROCKET’ SO WE CAN STOP THIS….THIS DISASTER!!!!! LESS THAN A TENTH OF A DEGREE!! 0.08 DEGREE!!!

That might make 2011 the coolest year of the past decade, Pinocchio and it won’t make this graph look any different: http://www.woodfortrees.org/graph/hadsst2gl/from:2001/to:2011/trend/plot/hadsst2gl/from:2001/to:2011

LOL!!! ROFLMAO!!! Do you even read what you link to Pinocchio?

        3. big Daddy BC says:

Just when I think you can’t look any more ignorant, you go and do it. LOL The Japanese say that the 13 warmest years on record all occurred in the last 15 and you’d dismiss it. What kind of professional meteorologist or scientist of any kind could dismiss that kind of alarming statistic. You celebrate because warming isn’t increasing as dramatically as it has while ignoring the fact that it’s already WAY above average. This year was .2 degrees CELSIUS above average WORLDWIDE! A degree Celsius is larger than a degree Fahrenheit. The conversion is 1.8. That makes this year .36 degrees warmer that average worldwide. Considering it’s only gone up a degree since the fifties, I’d call 2011 SIGNIFICANT. And you’ve been predicting cooler-than-average temps all year. LOL
Pull your head out of the sand, Magoo.

        4. Bill Steffen says:

Here’s YOUR link: http://ds.data.jma.go.jp/tcc/tcc/news/press_20111221.pdf It clearly states that 2011 was 0.08 degree warmer than your adjusted average. THAT’S LESS THAN ONE DEGREE! AND…look at the list of years. 2011 was the 2nd coolest year since 1995!!! Objective scientists can see this:

          http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/weather/weather_news/United-Kingdom-Meteorology-Office-declares-Earth-hasnt-warmed-in-15-years

Dr. Judith Curry of the BEST group at Berkeley that you have linked to said: “‘There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.’
