Weekend Snow

January 27th, 2012 at 8:47 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local Friday evening – 8:45 PM.  I’m sitting in a Starbucks because the hotel wants $10 a day to connect to the internet.  I’m in Orlando, Florida (first time in Florida since 1996).  It’s 63 and clear here (after a rather cloudy and damp arrival around 1 PM.   I down here with my with my wife, daughter, son-in-law and the two grandkids.  Michelle had enough frequent flyer miles so that all 6 of us could fly for $120.   We’re going to Disney Sat. and Sun., then back to G.R. late Monday – doing this as cheap as we can.  We swam in the outdoor pool this PM, despite the cool day.   While it’ll be dry and low 70s here in Orlando…West Michigan will see a shot of snow after midnight, more snow showers later Saturday and Sunday, with a little perhaps light snow to rain on Monday, before we go back to zonal (west to east) flow with the colder air retreating back into Canada and temperatures returning to a little above normal.   ALSO:  X-class solar flare!  The sun was pointed away from Earth, but still – pretty exciting.  Check out this link for more:  www.spaceweather.com.   Here’s links to the current conditions, regional radar, the forecast snowfall off the NAM model (out to 84-hours) and the GFS model (out to 120-hours), the HPC snow forecast, and a surface map. Here’s the local warning/advisory map and the National warning/watch/advisory map. You can checkout the latest Grand Rapids NWS discussion, the Northern Indiana NWS discussion (includes the Michigan Counties that border Indiana), the discussion for Northern Lower Michigan, and Eastern Lower Michigan. Here’s closings, the Spyglass Condos Weather Station the S. Haven GLERL station, the Muskegon GLERL station. Snowfall thru midnight Thurs. night was 1/10th inch in G.R. and 3/10ths inch in Lansing, where it was still snowing at midnight.

….”I’m sitting in a Starbucks because the hotel wants $10 a day to connect to the internet”. Huh?
Is it a hotel, or a roadside cabin? Watch out for the alligators! HELLO.

    William

  3. Brian(Grandville) says:

Where is winter? Ironically I just sold my gas guzzling suv. The green theory must be true. Right greenies.

  4. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

Nice night out for being in the garage.32.2° with a little breeze. No snow yet. Been peaceful, except for someone down the road shooting a hand gun at 11:30pm,but that is normal to hear shooting in the middle of the night. Looks like the backside of the snow will be a good 2 hr burst. Maybe around 5am ish. 2 inches tops.

  5. WINDYINDYY says:

24 INCHES OF SNOW BY SUNDAYY. R U READY?????

  6. Todd In Nunica says:

    1. Todd In Nunica says:

      raining here in Nunica……

  7. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

The snow crap started here just before 2:30am. Small flakes, but the car and ground is getting covered. It’s 32° on the nose. Just enough to make the roof slickery for cleaning out the stove pipes later today. Can’t wait till baseball season. GO TIGERS!!

  8. Pat (Allendale)but in Ga.for winter says:

You and your family have a great time. Will be in the 60′s here in Stockbridge,Ga. today.Which is about 20 miles south/east of Atlanta. But tell you what can’t wait to pack up the car and head for home.I have had a great time with the Great Grandkids, but there is no place like home.So as soon as interstate75 has good driving weather for at least 24 hrs I’m headed north.

    1. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

Great Grandkids. Wow. I have’nt thought about that yet. I have 7 Grandkids now with 2 more cooking in the oven at 98.6°. HELP!! I’m going to need a bigger house some day. Still snowing some, and still at 32°.

  9. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

The radar shows it not even snowing here yet,but it’s coming down. I can still see the radio tower lights 3 mi away, but the other 2 towers at 3 1/2 mi and 3 3/4 miles away are gone. Starting to think the old radar worked better. Snow is starting to stick to the road.

  10. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

Hope everyone enjoys my post and don’t think i am doing it too much. Starting to think i am the nite time reporter while you are all sleeping. Anyways, the snow has really picked up. Wind is out of the SSE and i had to shut my garage door because the snow was blowing in. The light tower at 3 miles away is gone now. I can still see house lites about a 1/2 mile away. Drive and cars are snow covered. Have a great weekend.

    1. Simone says:

honestly, Vincent, your posts are my favorite! You write about nature in a beautiful way.

  11. Dan says:

Bill: Enjoy your vacation and the warm temps of FLA!
SNOW, SNOW, SNOW! Its here for the time being. Well, for this weekend!
Seems like we are getting less cold air intrusions that are shorter in duration.
Perhaps, the LES for SUNDAY for crank up to be pretty strong!

  12. INDY says:

Back to winter ground is coverd time to get the Dans I mean sleds out and shovels ..From out in the snowy part of town ….INDYYYY

  13. Nathan (GR) says:

Wow, it is snowing extremely heavy in Forest Hills, with barly envy snow by Woodland Mall! It’s crazy how exact these bands are!

  14. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I have 2 1/2in out at the YardOfDucks, may how Michigan weather changes in a blink of an eye. Go from almost 50 yesterday to the snow almost completely gone to 32 outside with 2 1/2in of snow and still coming down. Oh INDY, INDY, INDY……what can I say…………YOU DA’ MAN!

  15. RJ (Rockford) says:

It looks great outside! We have 2 inches of snow on the ground already! It is snowing at a good pace currently and we are well on our way to getting three inches before this stops and then more snow tonight and on Sunday!!! Good call on the 3 to 6 inches INDY. Bad call for all of you you that said “winter is over”. We have a lot of winter yet with plenty of SNOW, COLD and more SNOW!!!

  16. Swanson (South Haven) says:

$10 per day for internet!!! must be an Orlando thing…Disney has the same “deal”!!! yet most hotels, Starbucks, McDonalds, Librarys, even our little coffee shop in So Haven has it for free…enjoy your well earned time off…

  17. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Oh and I must say my human barometer didn’t fail me again! The surgeon tweaked it and tuned it up and it’s been dead on for the last few events! Even my husband said I was dead on, all week I’ve been saying something is coming and it’s here!

    1. Bernie (at da lakeshore) says:

Mine was doing the same thing. There is no escape from weather changes either.
The snow suddenly stopped. 2 inches for a total.

  18. Swanson (South Haven) says:

blue sky over the lake here in SH.

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

The snow is slowing up a bit here and I saw radar and looks like this stuff will end momentarily.

  19. Bill (Marysville) says:

Well, going to Disney will offset any part of CHEAP on this trip!!!!

    Enjoy!!!

  20. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

stopped snowing here, blue sky to the south west

  21. KF (SE of Lowell) says:

Just took a measurement and so far we have received 2 inches of snow. Still snowing sideways at a good clip.

  22. Bill says:

10:30 a.m. near Lake Odessa. Wind is blowing. Low visibility. 2.5 inches of new snow. What’s with the forecast? It’s worse today than it was a couple weeks ago when there was a Winter Storm Warning, yet today there isn’t even an advisory or special weather statement. Do the forecasters ever look out the window? LOL.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Maybe it’s just our part of the state?? I’m having a borderline blizzard outside my window here at work – at times, can’t see across the street. YEESH!

    2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

LOL, I should have read your post before posting mine we pretty much said the same thing. It just doesn’t make sense! Kind of scary to rely on them and trust them when severe weather season comes around, that is when tornados hit without warning or NWS doesn’t call for anything when it’s a little to late and the storms are right on top of people. What ever happened to the early warning system, either they are trigger happy or not.

  23. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I just don’t get NWS, they call for advisories/watches/warnings and nothing happens, they leave it alone and we have blowing snow, slick roads, and so on and not 1 advisory at the very least. This is why people can’t take them seriously and prepare, they can’t make up their minds! They call for theses advisories and watches/warnings people try to take them serious prepare and nothing happens for most part, then when they don’t call it, people are caught off guard and people get hurt or killed or unprepared. That is just how I’ve seen it pan out the last couple of years. A lot of bloggers do a much better job on calling out the weather then NWS. JMPO.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

I just checked the “Hazardous Weather Outlook” – and they missed the wind-blown snow danger by a mile, IMO. But maybe there’s just “little pockets” of wind?? ;-) I’m easily getting gusts in the high-30 mph range.

  24. Chip says:

By Lake Macatawa, it is windy and sunny.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Now I have sunshine – but the wind is still picking up the snow and creating whiteouts!

      1. nevanburen says:

        Intense wind here too
..glad we aren’t ones with no power!! Wind is definitely negating sun power today…that wind will take your breath away. Is it staying around all day?

  25. ~Sherry~ (Comstock Park) says:

    Hey Bill,
What kind of hotel charges $10.00 a day for internet?? I would go somewhere else. What a rip off!! Enjoy the weather down there. I am happy we got some snow last night and this morning!! Probably 3 or so inches here!!

  26. dano (Norton Shores) says:

4″-6″ new snow this Saturday morning at Crystal Mountain. Excellent skiing.
    Light snow and 27*

  27. Dave H. says:

Had about 4 inches of very heavy wet snow up the Baldwin hill here in Jenison.

    1. Where are you located? I’m very close to there..

  28. Heres our Winter Weather Advisory WILL BE ISSUING A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW WITH THE 4 PM
    ZONE FORECAST….

I PLAN ON PUTTING OUT A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR LATE TONIGHT
INTO MIDDAY SUNDAY FOR 3 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW WEST OF I-69 AND NEAR
AND SOUTH OF I-96. LOOKING AT THE ISENTROPIC FORECAST DATA THERE IS
ACTUALLY A TROWAL IN THE 275K TO 280K LAYERS SUNDAY MORNING. THAT
FEATURE WAS NOT IN THE SNOW EVENT THIS MORNING AND YET WE GOT 2 TO 4
INCHES FROM THAT. ALSO THERE IS IMPRESSIVE LIFT IN THE DGZ…MORE SO
WITH THE SUNDAY MORNING EVENT THAN WITH THIS MORNINGS EVENT.

    1. ~Sherry~(Comstock Park) says:

I like it. Just got the driveway snow blowed and I am ready for more:))

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Our plow just came and did our driveway. Some of us knew this would happen or our bodies felt that this would happen when the NWS did not.

  29. RSM says:

What? No “Winter Weather Advisory” for this wet heavy snow that took down power lines? We get the advisories for a light dusting, but not for this. This is winter by the way. We will get winter weather. I have yet to see a “Summer Weather Advisory” when we are expecting a bright sunny day with temps in the 80′s. Here’s my take: The advisories and warnings have gotten way out of hand for all types of weather.

    1. 04 GTO (gaines 68th & Kzoo) says:

nice! still wondering if we will get that one storm kinda like we did last year. not these little ones… i wont even waist gas in the snow blower, its going to rain on Tuesday. :(

  30. INDY says:

Hey Hey Hey INDY is ready to get crazzy are u ready to get crazzy I feel it tonight maybe a little shake and bake at the casino and snow ball fight with my sprites what a good night it’s going to be!! Little term stand up bend over and let the snow lovers take over!!!! 3-6 inches!!! INDYYYYY

  31. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

A 1″ an hour in someplaces ? that would be Wild.

  32. Hastings says:

“3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL BETWEEN 1 AM AND 4 PM
SUNDAY. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WILL BE JUST WEST OF
US-131 AND SOUTH OF GRAND RAPIDS.

    * THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL RATES OF AROUND AN INCH PER HOUR ARE
EXPECTED BETWEEN 5 AM AND 10 AM SUNDAY MORNING.”

Makes me wish i had shoveled the 2 inches earlier.. solid ice on my hill of my driveway now :(

    1. nick (grand haven) says:

I have the same! Hopefully will get all the grass covered!

    2. JoAnne says:

Heck of a heavy band running through Hastings right now. Now I’m wondering, if this isn’t what they were expecting, will it push the totals up even more for today? When Kyle gave his forecast, he had a 12 hour timeline from the approaching system. I was watching this pop up between the two systems and wondered why it wasn’t being noticed. This is a heavy little push. At least 1/2 inch per hour since it started around midnight in the heaviest areas. Can anyone say synoptic event followed by LES? Anybody, Dan?

  33. Dan says:

SNOW! SNOW! It is awesome to see the snow falling at this moment, just before it gets light. Looks like it may be picking up in intensity!
Not sure what to make of the NWS discussion, they are looking to downplay this event a little. They take a lot of criticism, I’m sure with forecasting this Winter, it has not been easy!
I’m thinking, the snow won’t wind down until much later. We will see how this goes! ENJOY the fresh snow, EVERYBODY!

  34. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Exceptionally tiny smally mist of snow falling you can barely see if unless you really look and stare for it. I wonder if it’ll pick up later today.

  35. Dan says:

You may be a bit too far north, Swatz!
Looks like the heavier snow is falling to south of you, not too far south.
Give or take, what about 30 miles?

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

It’s starting to pick up, I can now look outside from my computer desk and see the flakes, not big but big enough to see them.

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Snow continues to pick up, 23.5 temp, pressure 39.82, wind up here SW @ 3.8mph,91% humidity.

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

          opps pressure is 29.82

  36. Jean Firstmate (S of Portland) says:

Somebody turned on the BIG snowflake switch!!!!!

  37. Snowing very heavily here…visibilities are probably 1/4 mile

  38. Conditions are utterly horrible in Holland (worst of 2012 thus far). I just measure 11″. 5″ of that fell in the last 2 hours. Visibilities are near zero, and the streets aren’t plowed. I witnessed one slide-off driving from church back home.

  39. Todd In Nunica says:

looks like we got just 2″ (maybe not quite) and thats not official…I havent wanted to go out in the cold yet…lol

Man I Must have read wrong I thought the lake effect was suppoed to be kicking in after the cold front went through….

  40. Sandy(Hudsonville) says:

The snow has stopped in Hudsonville. We got 10″ of new snow here.

  41. Tonka says:

    Over a 12″ in zeeland. Unreal…

    1. Todd In Nunica says:

wow crazy here i wake up to 1.5″ and had about 2 maybe 3 from the other night….I never plowed my drive and have MAYBE 2″ on it right now….gotta love michigan!

  42. Ben S says:

In Holland I got up at 7 am and saw less than 2 inches with no flakes in the air. I thought the “storm” was a flop and went back to bed. At 10:30 I awoke to find another 5 or 6 inches had fallen and I couldn’t see the end of the block. I just cleared about 9 inches total from the driveway. On the radar it appeared other areas might have had more locally.

  43. Nathan V says:

5 miles south of Hudsonville here on the Allegan/Ottawa border, we have received 10 inches of fresh snow today on top of the 4 inches we received yesterday!

  44. Tom S (S Holland) says:

    10″ at my house. What’s that?… SUNSHINE!?!

  45. Tonka says:

Just unburied the driveway and neighbors. Well over a foot in merely a matter of hours here in zeeland. Gotta love the lake!

  46. Chip says:

At Wakazoo Woods area we have about 6 – 7 inches. Beautiful!

  47. Tom in Alger Heights says:

Woke up this morning to no snow at 6:45. Had a cup of coffee and the snow had started. We had visiblities around 1/4 mile. Spent some time watching the radar and started clearing just before the system went through. Estimating 4″ in a couple of hours. At one point, we were getting about 1″+ per hour. Just did the final clean up and the sidewalks are just wet.

  48. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

WOW, not much snow at all here I guess Cedar got missed again not at all surprised, that is ok we got it yesterday when no advisory was issued. I just do not get it. But I guess the advisory was warranted for other areas.
