Warmest Day of the Year?

February 7th, 2012 at 1:50 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

This is the Carson (lumber baron) mansion in Eureka, CA (from wikipedia).  Eureka in northwest California had a high temperature of 73 on Monday.   The highest temperature all last year in Eureka was 70!   Eureka is by the ocean and they get a constant cool wind off the water.  The temperature doesn’t vary much.  Last year the highest temperature was 70, reached on Oct. 2 and Nov. 2.  The coolest temperature all year was 28.  They average 0.2″ of snow per year and the most snow ever in an entire winter was 6.9″ in 1906-07.   Last year they had rain on 160 days, 54 days with thick fog and no thunderstorms.  Here’s what happened yesterday (link will be good for a couple days).   Skies were clear, with a very light wind, allowing the temperature to dip to 41 (one degree cooler than the average low temperature).   The 32-degree temperature spread between the high and low is most unusual for them. It stayed clear all day.  The wind continued out of the east-southeast, producing some downslope warming.  The temperature jumped to 73 at 2 PM local time.  At 3 pm the temperature was still 69.  By 4 pm, the wind turned northwest off the water and the temperature fell to 57, then back to the southeast and back up to 66 at 5 pm.   The warmest temperature ever at Eureka was 87 in 1993 and the coolest was 20 in 1888.  If you don’t mind rain, wind and fog and are looking for a place where you don’t have to deal with heat and storms…Eureka’s the place for you.  In other news, it was warmer in Seattle (61) than it was in Brownsville TX (55) and Monterrey, Mexico (55).  Key West, FL had 4.34″ of rain on Sunday.  Campobosso, Italy picked up 31″ of snow and Bologna had 26.7″ in 5 days.  Snow flurries fell as far south as Naples.  Snow covered the ground in parts of Libya, Tunisia and Algeria.  They’re also watching a volcano in the Aleutian Islands for a possible eruption.    UPDATE – looking 00Z model data…both the GFS and European are cooler now early next week.  The European would give Grand Rapids a couple inches of snow on Friday, the GFS maybe an inch.  We have winds off the lake and cold air around Sun. and Mon.

No thank you. i hate the cold, and like it at least 73-75 year round

  2. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

I went to their official website (it looked familiar, I think you posted about them last year, Bill) and if it’s true that they averave 0.2″ snow for Winter, I found their ‘top story’ quite amusing:

“BE PROACTIVE WHEN PREPARING FOR WINTER STORMS! The City of Eureka is making sandbags and sand available to City residents who may experience flooding during winter storms. Sandbags and sand can be picked up at the City’s Corporation Yard, 945 14th Street, during regular business hours (8:00am-4:30pm).”

    1. George says:

Flooding is not amusing, and flooding is experienced when there is low rainfall.

  3. INDY says:

Just back from Florida last night. Had great weather with highs of 73-80* everyday, lots of sun and not a drop of rain. Central and northern Florida and all the way up through Georgia is in a serious drought. We saw and smelled smoke from brush fires in many places, and water levels in the rivers and resevoirs in Georgia looked to be 10 feet below there normal levels.

We saw two amazing tornado damage paths along I 75. One north of Atlanta and one south. All of the large trees on both sides of the highway were either uprooted or broken off 10 to 20 feet up for hundreds of yards. I’ve never seen anything like it. Apparently both of the tornados were last spring.

We also drove through a very narrow band of snow still on the ground in western Ohio and eastern Indiana near Ft. Wayne. River levels were also very high in Indiana, and there was quite a bit of standing water in the fields.

We knew we were almost home when we saw the line of low clouds that were hanging right at the Michigan border.

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Nice, I thought you were just not posting anymore because of the mild temps and warm weather nuts coming out…

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

On our way down to Florida last summer (that’s right due to our work we end up going in the summer and my wife’s sister lives in Cape Coral it would be nice to go down there in the winter time maybe next winter) Anyway we took I 65 down and in Alabama there were several areas of lots of trees just like you seen, also see lots of damage to houses and other buildings and just out side of Birmingham even the street signs and lights were twisted and bent. I had never seen that much damage. To was much worse then the damage that happened down in Florida from hurricane Charley. We came back on I 75 and the damage near 75 was no where near the damage just north of Birmingham.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

One of the GA tornados was an EF3 and the other was EF4.

  5. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

The weather near the coast in California is where the saying the coldest winter I ever seen was in the summer time. The wind coming off the water is cold and the warmest months are generally in the fall.
Speaking of a cold wind it kind of looks like we will be cool to cold for a while. I still think we have a good shot of seeing one or more big snow storms yet this winter/spring. I would not be too surprised to see a cold and snowy March. Sorry about that Fixxer, and I will at this time still stick with my winter/spring snow fall total amount of 40 to 50 inches. (of course that may change)
BTW the first 6 days of February its been an almost unbelievable +11.6° above average and we still have not had any snow fall yet!

  6. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Detroit hit 51 yesterday. That means we’ve seen a 50 degree day 5 out of the last 6 weeks! In the dead of winter…

    How crazy is that?

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

We had a white out snow shower around noon down here. I haven’t seen that in a while either =)

  7. Bnoppe says:

    2. Cort S. (Plymouth, NH) says:

It’ll be okay. You live in the middle-latitudes, where baroclinic systems are commonplace. Roller coaster temperature swings have existed and will continue to exist for the rest of your life and beyond. Mother nature will never make up her mind… that’s why it’s fun to live here!

    3. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

My back but mainly shoulders have really been aching the last couple of days so something is brewing, and lots of headaches so we shall see if my body is right.

      1. fixxxer says:

The up & down patterns really suck!

  9. Judi I says:

My husband’s sister and family live in Oregon. I wrote her and said we seem to be getting Oregon’s type of weather, mild and sort of humid and kiddingly asked her if she wanted to move back.

I’m guessing the average age on this blog at around 14.

    1. 24 here, and when the weather is boring, folks sure do get crazy up in here.

      1. I have been in this blog since day 1 (dusts off old records) yeah that was a while ago.

        1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Yep, Charles has been on this blog before I was and I have been here many years. I know there are just a few of the old timers that still write on here from time to time. But for the most part most are newbies and many have many different “persona’s” so no one knows who is really who.

  16. BILL's Buddy says:

    * rolls eyes

  17. Joanne says:

4th warmest January on record. Although Bill and others keep saying that two weeks until the temps take a downward trend, I think that this entire year is going to be a warm one. I’m looking forward to a nice hot summer.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

Caution: Exxon-Spencer works for big oil and is not a credible scientific source.

Here’s an interesting paper that comes from Penn State about the Campaign of Disinformation that people like Bill Steffen and Roy Spencer are waging on the public.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

LOL – Penn St. circled the wagons to protect their precious football team. Now they’re trying to circle the wagons around Michael Mann…he of the infamous Climategate email “use MIKE’S TRICK to HIDE THE DECLINE”. Remember bigD, you cited Dr. Muller at Berkeley, and Dr. Muller said he won’t even read Mann’s papers anymore! LOL!

Here’s what you need to know about Dr. Spencer: http://www.drroyspencer.com/about/ And, here is the truth: “Dr. Spencer’s research has been entirely supported by U.S. government agencies: NASA, NOAA, and DOE. He has never been asked by any oil company to perform any kind of service. Not even Exxon-Mobil.”

BigDaddy is a compulsive liar who practices the politics of personal destruction. He lied when he said that WOOD-TV pays no taxes. He lied when he said that Mitt Romney was a polygamist. BigD has no scientific credentials. He’s a political hack, here to disrupt, clinging to an alarmist view in order to further his goal of making utility and energy rates “skyrocket”. He’s desperate, because more and more people are coming to realize that global temperatures have leveled off and the “cure” of higher energy and utility bills would do nothing to move global temperature.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

And when YOU have no rebuttal, you accuse me of engaging in personal attacks while personally attacking me. LOL You’re a giant hypocrite.

My credentials are simple, I’m a resident of West Michigan who’s sick of watching YOU take advantage of your celebrity status to engage in a campaign of disinformation. I don’t see you asking others for their credentials. What difference does it make if I’m a Professor or Sanitation Engineer. I represent the moderates, the little guys who are sick of being asked to feel sorry for rich CEOs for not being as rich as they’d hoped. Frankly I’m sick of a wealthy weatherman that lies about climate because it help his bottom line.

Climate change is real. It’s not a hoax put on by liberal democrats to raise your taxes. It’s not a conspiracy that pays the world’s scientists to lie. “Given that 19 Academies of Science in the world have issued reports or statements in support of the consensus view, including at least four reports by the US Academy of Science, the very institution created to give advice to the US government on complex scientific issues, to say that the consensus view is a hoax is an obvious untruth.” …But untruths are what we see from the sources you commonly post here, people like Exxon-Spencer who you’ve quoted above as saying he doesn’t take money from fossil fuel giants. He writes for them. He speaks at their engagements. He’s on the roster as an expert at a variety of foundations funded by them. But so too are Maue, Christy, and Bastardi. You’re right, there’s a lot of money to made by spreading lies about climate, but the money is in the hands of Big Oil. Read this paper. It’s all about you.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

You’re a “moderate”?? BWA HA HA!! ROF – LOL!! You’re a jealous man, envious of the successful – no scientific credentials. You bounce around to the most leftist of websites (google his IP). I do consider myself “wealthy” but it has nothing to do with how much money I have or don’t have.

The truth is global warming alarmism is dying a slow death from reality. The UK Met Office confirms global temperatures have held steady for 15 years: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/weather/weather_news/United-Kingdom-Meteorology-Office-declares-Earth-hasnt-warmed-in-15-years Global temperatures now are COOLER than average: http://www.drroyspencer.com/wp-content/uploads/UAH_LT_1979_thru_January_2012.png (Graph from NASA IR Satellite Data).

Check this out. Top 2012 Priorities…global warming LAST: http://www.people-press.org/files/legacy-pdf/1-23-12%20Priorities%20Release.pdf

        4. big Daddy BC says:

So you’re searching my IP address out and googling it? Why? Why is it so difficult for you to support your position above-board? When Joanne started to question you, you posted her email for the world to see. Why? Why can’t you just debate the issue instead of consistently falling back on slimeball tactics.

Listen, I’ve offered countless times to just go away. I’ll be glad to. I’m tired of the childish crap. All you have to do is stop the campaign of misinformation.

        5. Bill Steffen says:

I never posted JoAnne’s email and you know it. She posted a phony email address. You not only can’t censor me, but when you come here and lie (like when you called Romney a polygamist) I not only tell everyone the truth, but it allows me to post links where people can see for themselves the foolishness of your hysteria:
