Heat Wave Continues

A couple of pictures from ReportIt. The first is the Lake Michigan beach (lots of waders) from Nels and on the right, apricot trees in blossom in Fennville from Sidona. Another record high of 75 for Grand Rapids. That’s three record highs in the last four days and at least three more to come. It’s not just the low temperatures. We’re breaking the record high minimum temperatures by 10 degrees. We’ll reach 80 tomorrow and 82 on Tuesday. The all-time record high temperature for March is 82, set 3 times – in 1910, 1938 and 1945. The NAM model gives G.R. 84 on Tues. and that could happen. If it’s mostly sunny on Weds., we’ll be 82-84, though I think some clouds will approach by then. Grand Rapids is now 14.4 degrees above average for the month of March. Unbelievably warm high temperatures Sunday: 74 in Montreal, Canada, 79 at Intl. Falls MN, 88 at Huron S.D., 82 at Traverse City. As I write this (9:50 PM EDT), not a single reporting station in Hawaii has been as warm as Traverse City this Sunday!! Traverse City was also warmer than Key West and Palm Beach Fl. The cold, rain and snow is out west. Phoenix AZ had a high of 56 and up to 1/2″ of rain. Snowfall in Arizona: Prescott 10″, Grand Canyon 10″ (with 25″ of snow on the ground – North Rim, Flagstaff 12″, Williams 16″, Bellemont 16.5″, Munds Park 18″. There were two dozen reports of pea-marble sized hail in Arizona today. Los Vegas had a windy, cold high of 54 Sunday and Los Angeles struggled to 55. Kentfield CA has had 11.17″ of rain in the past week and San Francisco has received 2.95″. Topping the list is a 19.96″ weekly total at Scott Creek CA. The Kirkwood Ski Area reports 66″ of new snow in the past 3 days. Up to 14″ of snow fell in the hills east of San Diego. Alta Utah had 16″ of snow with 94 mph wind gusts at Snowbasin UT. It’s still cold in Alaska with Nuiqsut at -45 this morning. Barrow bottomed out at -30 and Fairbanks dipped to -27.
Last Sunday we were snowshoeing (Grand Traverse County). Today my son went swimming in East Grand Traverse Bay (Elk Rapids). What a week!

I have to say, this is unprecedented heat. Magnolias are coming into flower when crocuses have barely been out of the ground one week. Crazy!

Let’s get this straight- first off, Lindzen isn’t a climatologist, he is a meteorologist. He is in no way qualified to make assessments on our current climatological situation. Next, why would anybody have anything to gain by promoting awareness of climate change. Seems to me big oil would have a lot more to gain by trying to deny it! Check this out:

Yeah, too bad that map only goes back to 1981! Greenhouse gases have been rapidly increasing for over 50 years. Also, did you notice the extreme temperature jumps at the north pole on your map?
The Arctic icecap is growing – greatest extent since at least 2004. From Nov. 2006 to Nov. 2011, the Arctic icecap grew by more than the size of the state of Wisconsin. It’s now within one standard deviation of normal.
Bill, are you referring to growth of first-year ice? Of course, with significant meltback, there is room for significant temporary growth. The icecaps and glaciers are melting, and sea levels are rising.

The first two maps that Adam linked to do not use the current 1981-2010 average. They use either 1961-1990 or 1971-2000. That’s done on purpose. When you use the coldest decades of the 20th century, the comparison looks scarier. Scarier maps mean more funding from taxpayers and a government that runs up an unsustainable 1.7 TRILLION dollar deficit this year in “peacetime”. As to the third link in his comment…everyone agrees global temperature warmed a little in the 80s and 90s. Some of the warming has been because of urbanization of weather stations (http://www.google.com/search?q=weather+station+siting+warming&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) and at least some (really most) was due to natural factors (combination of warm PDO and warm AMO). The increase in sea ice just in past year has been greater than the size of the state of Wyoming in Antarctica and greater than the size of the state of Wisconsin in the last 6 years in the Arctic. Land ice hasn’t decreased a tiny fraction of that amount in the last year/six years.
That’s because it’s sea ice. Sea ice grows and melts every year. Land ice doesn’t.

Sea ice is increasing at both Poles because it’s colder at both Poles. Any presumed decrease (and presumed is a big word…note how the IPCC has had to back off their claim of ice melting in the Himalayas) is less than a drop in the bucket compared to the increase in ice at the poles (and Antarctia is land ice!!

i was in San Bernardino, CA last night. And when I left at 2 am, it was snowing! There was about an inch that fell fairly quick and covered the ground. And i’m not talking in the mountains! It was 28 degrees outside!
My aunt and uncle live in prescott, saw some great pictures of the snow we didn’t get this past winter

Lake Michigan will warm really fast with these sunny days and warm nightime lows. The bubble could be gone by memorial day if this keeps up setting us up for a very stormy summer.
While warmer then average for this time of year (most years there is still a lot of ice on the lakes) it will still take a long time for the Great Lakes to “warm” up and even when they do its only the top few feet that get “warm” as the temp at the lower levels is always around 39° all year. And with any wind there will be mixing. As for a pattern breaker storm that’s always a possibility

george has no idea what he’s talking about. their doing the same crap they did last year and already trying to push a cool spring/summer on us and look how hot we were. they should just come out and say “we have no idea” how it will be. the current 90 day still shows well above average temps for us here.
I’d say George is pretty good. He did learn under some of the best Fixxer. I really do like Bill as my favorite weather man but i can’t watch WOOD. It’s just to plain of a news station for my taste but I do watch Bill for the weather.
I’d have to say the lake is already warming quickly as the kids and I were out swimming in it yesterday at holland beach. It was cool, but not to much unlike last year in May or early June. Of course it was also dead calm with no waves or currents to mix up the water so the shallows stayed warm in the sun.
If you look at the forecast- next weekend is only supposed to be in the 50′s. That will seem really cold compared to this beautiful weather we’ve been having.

They are flawed because they have inaccurate assumptions and therefore make inaccurate forecasts. None of the climate models forecast temperatures would stop warming globally, and they have, for the past 10 years plus. Science is the PDO, increasing La Ninas, a quieter sun…we know from the past that these conditions cool the planet in general and that’s why the planet has stopped warming and why global temperatures will hold steady (or even drop if the NAO goes negative or we get a decent volcano) in the next 10-20 years. Look at the increasing ice at both Poles in the past year. It’s cold PDO/LA Nina…not trace amounts of CO2 that’s driving climate.
I have been waiting to see the out look for this summer actually. When are we going to get our summer weather predictions?

Kinda late now anyway seeing as its felt like spring/summer for weeks. It’s weird because the winter forecast always comes out so early. Oh well.
For what its worth, most “experts” I’ve seen are saying cooler-to-average temps and drier than average for the midwest this summer. I’d expect Bill’s forecast will be close to these.

Michelle – I *used* to receive the signals here at Gun Lake – until all the cell towers started being built. Now, I don’t get Jack Squat – no NOAA, no cell, no (clear) TV-8 on a TV without a cable box. If I see a tornado, I just have to send smoke signals to the NWS….LOL!!

My thoughts that we don’t see these type of temps in April or May.I have a feeling i will be having my coat and gloves on as i watch my son play baseball in a couple of weeks . I will take an average summer temp wise. Might be over due for a cool summer. Even 70s all summer would be fine by me.
70′s for highs would not be good for the beaches and tourism at all. look how businesses suffered in 2009 because of the cool weather we had. you people have to take that into consideration as well. if we were in the low-mid 80′s all summer id be happy. george lessons is pulling the same stuff he pulled last year and he was wrong as can be. he said at one point it would be cold enough for coats all summer.

Jeff the summer of 2009 was a cool summer. Short memories indeed. As for this summer my guess right now is for a cooler then averag one. But who know its always subject to change.

July of 2009 was the coolest on record here in GR. Where you writing on this blog in 2009??? I am sure if you were you were complaining every day on how cool it was.

I think we may be under a MD soon or watch with the storms that just bloomed in Northern Indiana:) watch those carefully I have as feeling they will grow to severe limits:)
well nothings severe right now but yes we may have to watch them as them seem to be moving a bit north.

Yep, winter is over, Now will it get cold again?? We have a chance of seeing frost into May so yes it still can get cold and I would not put the winter coats away heck we may need them all summer this year!

awe come on slim you know better than to think we would need winter coats in the summer. ive never seen it get that cold in my entire life. unless you see some super secret model that shows that will happen.
I was talking about April and May. And yes when I lived in Alpena back in the 1960′s there were many mornings in June and some in July and August when the temps would fall into the mid and low 30′s. And for me that is coat weather.

Swan creek in Allegan county is full of steelhead right now.
Don’t be suprised if we get a foot of wet snow on April 1.
There’s always a chance of that happening anytime in April. Maybe not a foot but several inches are still possible.

DON’T JINX US!!!! Michigan weather always seems to love to throw unexpected curve balls at us, good and bad.
sadly mike i sort of had a sick feeling we may see snow again. this is why as much as i love this mini heat wave i wish it would of held off until may, too early for it and for it to last.
whats with all of this talk all the sudden of a “cold” summer? where are people seeing this indicated anywhere because id like to know.
While it all depends on where and if a ridge sets up! But it should be noted that some of the years with a warm March had a cool summer. Like 2000 and 1945 for an example.

Warm summer, cold summer… Just keep the away from the 90′s, please! Been to the Middle East, been stationed in Texas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi, I am very much done with hot places.
Well with all the warm weather me and my dad decided to gamble a little so we planted about 1/2 acre of sweet corn today
and gamble you did if we get any more real cold weather or snow.
Hooray for cumulus clouds today, that’s as exciting as things got around here.
I don’t really understand why Michiganders say the weather is “unpredictable” in this state. Sure, we have changes in the weather…but my observations since moving here are that once Michigan gets stuck in a pattern, it gets STUCK in the pattern!!! Summer 2009: cold; All three falls: WARM; summer 2010: HOT; last January/Feb: Alberta Clippers; This Fall/”Winter”: Relentless warmth. I know I’m just looking at a couple years, but I have found weather here, for the most part, to be pretty predictable and more boring than I thought it would be. One can pretty much tell what it’s going to be like based off of wind direction. More predictable than when I lived in PA!
Its not all that unpredictable but it is very variable. But in reality we have no real extremes. We have very few hot days and very few extremely cold days. I know some people that live around here think it gets hot (and it dose for a few days at most) and some (like me) think that it gets cold but how may sub Zero days do we average? Of course parts on Michigan do get a lot of lake effect snow but on east side of the state there is very little of that. So the weather in the great lakes area can be interesting.

Yes look at radar west of us thats one big cold front coming with lots of snow on the back side so get outside niow and it’s going to storm with a roaarrr in West michigan dig your fox hole turn your weather radio up and watch Mr. Manning win a superbowl with the Denver Colts From 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and 9 sprites sun burn tonight …Hi Bill…. There was a time when we were young when 60s in March was the signal to clean up the old ball yard and start playing. Now, we had our first Daffodil open today. We saw our first Robin on the Seventh. The Crocus are almost finished with thier blooms as the hyacinths replace them with thier sweet smell. This is March in Michigan? It seems like we had a pole shift that now puts us further south atleast 15 degrees in Latitude. Cold weather crucifers went into the soil today. We will be paying for this touch of the tropics soon. It looks that according to yesterday’s blog, we will not likely be punished by cold but rough weather looks like it’s enroute.

It was reported that the icebreaker USS Mackinaw headed out today from the Soo to break ice in Whitefish Bay, and down by Neebish as well…………. so there still is some white stuff in Michigan!

It feels like SUMMER and I love every minute of it! I am just worried that it will be short lived and the outcome of another big freeze on the crops….that will be detrimental to so many. In the meantime, though, I cannot help but enjoy the beautiful weather!
Just spent a couple of minutes out on the balcony/deck. Beautiful out there. 80F in my room, window open, and you can see the stars and planets very well tonight!

I prefer 80-85. I never use the air conditioner, LOL. In the summer when it’s 95F outside, I only use a small 12 inch fan.
Feels like a sauna in our apartment tonight. Its like living in florida!

Was enjoying some beautiful views of the stars tonight when I noticed that the slight cloud cover to the NE of us was moving so slow it almost looked as if it were not moving at all. Never have seen clouds moving so slow in all my years…any particular reason…slow jet stream?? other??/
