Storms cause damage in W. Michigan

July 17th, 2012 at 5:58 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

4th picture is the storm coming into Fremont – from Jeff Smith.  3rd picture is from K. Chapman in Marshall looking south at the t-storm anvil from the storm in N. Indiana.  2nd picture from the left is rain in Green Bay, where nearly an inch of rain fell (over 2″ in a couple spots in NE Wisconsin).   Here’s storm reports from W. Michigan.  WIND DAMAGE in Hart, Pentwater, Hersey, Stanton and Fremont…2 foot-diameter tree snapped off with numerous limbs down in Hart.  Limbs down, 1/2″ hail and 2,000 without power in and near Pentwater.  Gust to 54 mph at Hersey and 52 mph at Fremont (plus over half an inch of rain and some power outages) and 40 mph at Mears in Oceana Co. and at Duck Lake in Muskegon Co.  Much of Kent County had gusts to 35-45 mph.  The peak wind at the G.R. airport was 41 mph.  Allendale had 37 mph and Hudsonville 35 mph.  Half  inch hail and half an inch of rain in Ludington and a gust to 35 mph at Hesperia.  The Muskegon beach had a gust to 34 mph.  Gust front coming down Lake Michigan into Ottawa Co.    The wind gusted to 47 mph in Milwaukee.  At7 PM the wind at Milwaukee’s Mitchell Field (S. Side of the city) is North at 29 mph gusting to 46 mph.  The wind about 15 miles south at Racine is West at 8 mph.   Click on  images to enlarge.

This is not the actualy SPC link.
      here is the SPC link:

  1. TAZ (freeport) says:

Looks like they are holding together as they get to the lake.

  2. GunLakeDeb says:

At the risk of being cynical – we can WATCH all we want. I want to FEEL something wet coming from the sky (no – and not from a seagull, either….LOL!)

  3. Katie in Kentwood says:

    Come onnnnnn storms!!

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

It’s so hard to want to even get remotely excited because we’ve seen this pattern so far for the last 5wks of slight risks, “See Text”, Meso-Discussions and nothing has come of them. Mother Nature needs to stop talking the talk and walking the walk if she’s going to pull this on us.

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Oh and why did I have to go and do that go and check out radar because now I’m feeling a bit of excitement because that thing is intensifying and maybe, just MAYBE mother nature will deliver her birthday present to me! ;-)

        1. Katie in Kentwood says:

Yeah I am going through a roller coaster of emotions right now lol…disappointment, then excitement…

        2. Bruiseviolet (Cedar Springs) says:

          Happy Birthday =)

  4. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

Of course the storms are going to go north and south of Muskegon county >:(

  5. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

Once again nothing for Muskegon county a bust :(

  6. SS (Pwell Area) says:

Not good… Barry County fair has their harness horse racing tonite!!!
    BUT we need the rain!!!!

  7. Brad (Lawrence) says:

Not sure if things will blow up or not, but if not, I am thinking anybody south of Howard City won’t get in on these. I’m only guessing by looking at the radar. I think it’s safe to say I won’t see anything at all. I’m holding out hope for any of you North of me though! :)

  8. fixxxer says:

Ill believe it when we i see it.

You READY for an F5 at your yard o bricks indy? ;)

    1. Chuck says:

I thought you said it was not going to rain?

  9. Katie in Kentwood says:

Anyone in Ludington getting any pics of the storm coming in?

  10. fixxxer says:

    Is that a bow?

  11. KF (SE of Lowell) says:

My 12 year old son (who wants to be a meteorologist) is at camp up on Portage Lake by Manistee. He is probably giving every camper a detailed lesson in meteorology and storm clouds. I wish he had his phone so I could text him and find out the weather up there.

  12. BJ says:

RAIN RAIN RAIN!!!!!!!!! I’ve been thinking about it all day. Had to drive to Grand Haven from Grand Rapids today and it is too hot. It feels outside like it did when I lived in Tucson. Your brain feels like it’s frying if you stay outside too long.

  13. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Oh if that BIG RED BLOB would only expand more south and or the tiny cell North of Chicago over the lake blows up and connects then I’d say we are good but it acts like it wants to but the almight bubble might have another thing to say yet AGAIN, but I’ve been getting a pressure headache over the last couple hours and only getting worse, but doesn’t mean anything I know. But this would be a nice, nice storm. It’s pretty windy up here so it’s been nice. I hope I can grab my camera and drive for photo’s, I sure do miss taking pictures of storms.

  14. fixxxer says:

$10 that turns into another bow as it moves southeast.

    1. fixxxer says:

And no i wont pay up. ;)

  15. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

I’m right in the path of the heaviest YAY:)

    1. fixxxer says:

So am i if it stays on track.

      1. Katie in Kentwood says:

It weakened quite a bit over the lake…however I hope it restrengthens when it hits land, and hits GR :D

  16. fixxxer says:

Thats a bow, correct me if im wrong people.

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

LOL, someone is getting excited and he won’t admit it!! :-p

      1. fixxxer says:

Im not excited until its close to gr and doesnt die out.

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

LOL, even if it gets 2miles from GR it could still die out, but I’m in the line for it as well if it doesn’t fizzle out. But as Bill said he is encouraged and it’s moving at a pretty good clip so I would say if it holds it will get here before his estimated time, but what do I know? And as I look at radar I can just start seeing it weaken to the north of the red blob, so I guess we all know where this is going…… NO WHERE unless something changes in a more positive direction. But way to dry nothing to feed it because no moisture to lift up off this dry ground if I’m thinking correctly or remembering what someone told me.

    2. Katie in Kentwood says:

      No I dont see it..

      1. fixxxer says:

Its bowing, you can clearly see it. Moving fast too.

    3. Cort S. says:

It’s a somewhat linear convective system, but I’m not ready to call it a bow yet. Its direction of propagation (new cell development) is not in the same direction that the cells themselves are moving. I don’t see a robust rear inflow notch or bookend vortex(es).

      1. fixxxer says:

        Always a party pooper.

        1. Cort S. says:

I tell it like it is, like you do.

        2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

See you are excited, or WAS! I admit a had a bit of a spark until I saw the north edge getting closer to the lake shore as it started to fizzle.

        3. fixxxer says:

  17. So I’m looking at the storms, and I think to myself, wow, it sure would be nice to get rained on by those. The Flat River in Greenville has bare areas, islands…

  18. Amy says:

According to the weather channels next 6 hour radar it all fizzles out before getting to GR. Yet again no rain!

    1. fixxxer says:

  19. marianne says:

please come south to south haven please please please move down here and rain buckets

  20. Me :-) says:

Looks like we finally will see some storms. This will be a great evening :-)

  21. fixxxer says:

If this misses us and strenghtens south of us im going to be ticked.

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

You and me and many others and it will see my post above :-(

      1. fixxxer says:

        Its BS anymore.

      2. Jack says:

Hey Birthday Girl…Did you know you share a B- Day with ……..The Invention of A.C…. Pretty COOL….pun Intended..

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

:-) That is! Rather mother natures gives me the gift of storms or not, it’s still a good b-day knowing my dh is in route home for his R&R and arrives at 1pm tomorrow at GR airport. So, I’m a happy girl regardless! I still hold fast and firm on my storm predictions that we’ll have our share and I’ll break the bubble that hangs over W. Michigan July 20-Aug. 3 and you all will get much, much needed rain/storms ;-) Hopefully I can watch it come a cross Lk. Erie

  22. Deb (Ludington) says:

Just rained so hard here couldn’t even see out the back window my steet is under water right now had about .47″ in a half an hour so some rain but also much needed :)

    1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

Send that our way please :)

  23. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Ok, the northern edge weakened but regained strength slightly on land. So we shall see what the rest will do but still unless that thing grows a LONG tail from up north down past us, we’ll just miss it unless it shifts again more S-SE. And it doesn’t weaken, but again been there done that and it’s goin to do it again. I hope I’m wrong because I want that gift Mother Nature keeps dangling in front of me today! LOL!!

  24. fixxxer says:

Doesnt look like its weakening to me but its moving more east now.

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

That is why I said it needs to shift and grow a great big giant LONG tail, another one bites this dust bowl of ours.

  25. Mr. Negative says:

    We all know better…

  26. Katie in Kentwood says:

Well they’ve fallen apart…oh please restrengthen

    1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

They are moving east now they won’t hit Kentwood or Twin Lake :(

    2. fixxxer says:

Unbelievable… can you see the bubble bill?

      I give up this season.

  27. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

Well this was a bust it can so close to me why does it have to move east I am done listening to GRR because they said all the storm movement today would be southeast nope it’s moving east!

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

It looked pretty on radar, see mother natures is full of empty promises for us W.Michiganders.

      1. fixxxer says:

Id like to call “mother nature” something but dont want to offend the ladies.

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Oh the way she is being the B word is nice compared to the other word I’m thinking of!!

        2. Katie in Kentwood says:

It’s ok I agree….she has something against west michigan. she’s been teasing and taunting us all summer. ugh!

        3. fixxxer says:

Somethings wrong over here. I still blame that lake.

  28. Katie in Kentwood says:

Severe thunderstorm warnings for Newaygo and Oceana counties..

  29. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

New severe thunderstorm warning for Oceana and Newaygo counties had that come more south it would be me :(

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

And I’ll be just missing it as well, Newaygo is about 1/2hr W-NW of me.

  30. Deb says:

Warning for Mason & Ocean county! Yay! Maybe it will help bring my pond back up! :) Now please come to GR! I hate storms but at this point, Bring it on!!!! We so need the rain!

  31. Julie (Pwell) says:

It has been mentioned that this hot and dry weather pattern is a direct relation to the jet stream. I am just wondering if anyone has predicted when the jet stream might move? Is this even possible to predict accurately?

    1. fixxxer says:

    2. Cort S. says:

As I told fixxxer a few days ago (he was wanting an accurate long range prediction for some reason), weather patterns that set up in July are usually quite stable and do not break down significantly until about mid-August. Looks like more of the same in the models for at least the next week. Really hot, then a little cooler but still warm (as the heat shifts west), then heating back up again early next week. The jet stream location and the strength and location of the Subtropical High have everything to do with this nationwide drought. The subtropical high is over the center of the country this summer rather than the Southeast like it usually is. As a result, moisture transport from the Gulf of Mexico to the Midwest by the low-level jet (Michigan’s biggest summer rainmaker situation) is about as rare as a Lions superbowl appearance.

      1. fixxxer says:

Its ok cort you can just say west michigan sucks this year “storm wise”. ;)

  32. Mike (Caledonia) says:

When the rain comes down to hard it will just run off but any rain at this point is welcome. We have only had 3 tenths since june 1st here in Caledonia.

  33. Katie in Kentwood says:

Well, from the looks of it. The storm will pass through Big Rapids and head toward the thumb…sigh.

  34. It’s severe warned, and headed southeast… here’s hoping.

    1. fixxxer says:

I think you know as well as i do gr wont get anything.

      1. Cort S. says:

Chuck doesn’t care about GR… he’s in Greenville. You should chase it with him.

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I know I’d love to I’m hearing far off distant thunder and a very tall cumulas cloud down in the greenville area so I’m sure Charles is on it.

    2. Katie in Kentwood says:

      its headed for you Charles

      1. We’ll see, not holding my breath though.

  35. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

New report coming in a spotter 10 miles east of Pentwater reports numerous tree branches down with 1/2 inch hail yep see if that had come just a tab bit south that would have been me :(

    1. fixxxer says:

Another month and you can forget about severe storms here. Thats unless fall brings us something.

      1. Cort S. says:

The summer drought of 2007 gave us this in October:
So there’s always hope. Of course, the bubble is insane this year.

      2. Amy says:

      3. fixxxer says:

        I dont remember that event.

        1. Cort S. says:

Were you in Detroit-land then? I don’t think it hit that area. But this was one heck of a tornado watch:

    2. Deb says:

That’s not good. My place is about 15 miles east of Pentwater. I hope we don’t have damage up there, I won’t know til Friday

  36. Jack says:

Maybe If we All Quit watching Radar….Turn on The REDHOT TIGER GAME…that would Help brings US RAIN….Nothing Else Seems To have Worked.. ENJOY….

    1. fixxxer says:

I dont watch baseball nor detroit sports.

    2. Sarah says:

Tonight is the DONATE LIFE game. Little boy who threw 1st pitch had his 2nd kidney transplant at Motts. :) We were going to go but too hot for my kidney baby.

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

        Awwww, God bless!

    3. Marshall (Clarksville) says:

Red Hot Tigers? Not tonight, not when we got a triple A prospect on the mound, maybe tomorrow night.

      1. Jack says:

        You were right….Marshal: Tigers got Killed,Mutalated,Chewed – Up,Spit OUT,Wasted,Basted,Crushed,ECT??,Oh did I Mention………SHUTOUT..

  37. Scott (west olive) says:

Too much outflow from the big storm over lake? it’s tying to get something started out mid lake.

  38. Ray says:

Hopefully more will develop and SOAK G.R.and W.MICH!!!

  39. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

Over 2000 people without power now near the Pentwater area

  40. Bruiseviolet (Cedar Springs) says:

I just made the mistake of going outside and looking to the north- now i am EXCITED- hoping this comes a little more south- it seems to be going more east now? Maybe it’s just me- fingers crossed though!!!!!!!

  41. Bernie (At da Lakeshore) says:

Wow…I am glad it missed me all I got was rain and a little wind.
Lots of power surges in the past few minutes.

  42. Nicole in kentwood says:

Heres to hoping…fingers crossed it can make it down this way.

  43. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

My God that is a pure straight GAP between the north and south of us, it’s as wide as Kent county, no more “Ah Pure Michigan”, it’s more “ARGH PURE BUBBLE”.

    1. fixxxer says:

I just dont get it. I dont think anyone can explain it.

      1. Cort S. says:

Systemic bias (the supid Lake) plus random chance. Explained it. ;)

        1. fixxxer says:

  44. fixxxer says:

Im going to start a new campain…. ” pop the west michigan bubble”.

    1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

      Yes good idea haha!

    2. Bruiseviolet (Cedar Springs) says:

I’m convinced it’s the imaginary state line that is the storm shredder- sometimes if you watch radar- it almost looks like it’s a big wall eating the storms- lots of times they just die there. LOL

  45. caroldee says:

Not holding my breath on any of that reaching the I-94 corridor,we only watch and pray for a few drops.

  46. Cort S. says:

Hey fixx, here in Florida I just had a thunderstorm and now there is a double rainbow outside. Come on down here! We’re one of the few states in the country not in a drought right now!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

33″ of rain since May 1 at Miami.

      1. fixxxer says:

Hey bill, can i get some storms?..thanks!

    2. fixxxer says:

I got my heat so im good. I just want one “notable” severe storm here and my summer will be complete.

    3. SBPortage002 says:

I was in Florida for a few months years ago. Loved those storms that popped up every afternoon that sunner. The cloud build up then the thunder, lightning and heavy rain. That was spectacular.

      1. SBPortage002 says:

  47. Mecosta, Isabella and Gratiot look to be inline for strong storms again

  48. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

I see a funnel cloud at least I got to see something :)

    1. fixxxer says:

      Take a photo.

      1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

It’s gone now just a quick spin up

  49. Katie in Kentwood says:

It’s getting really cloudy here in Kentwood….but nothing on radar.

    1. fixxxer says:

      Same here.

      1. Katie in Kentwood says:

they look like rain dont they
