Weekend Sports Thread

The Tigers magic number is just one (either one Tiger win or one White Sox loss).  The Tigers won a close one Sunday, 2-1 on a Fielder homer in the 8th.  The Tigers have 3 road games left in Kansas City, starting Porcello Monday evening.  The Chicago White Sox have faded like the ’69 Cubs, losing to Tampa Bay 6-2 Sunday aftn.  The White Sox have now lost 10 of their last 12, while Tampa Bay was won 10 of the last 11.   Miguel Cabrera continues to have a decent chance being the first Triple Crown (home runs, runs-batted-in and batting average) winner since Carl Yastremski in 1967.

This sure was a week that “our guys” lost.    Michigan State came up a point shy in a 17-16 loss to Ohio State at East Lansing.   Michigan State had only 34 total yards rushing.    Central Michigan got blown out by Northern Illinois 55-24.  NIU had 407 yards rushing.  Toledo thumped Western Michigan 37-17.   Hope College lost their 4th in a row, getting shut out by Adrian 24-0.  Kalamazoo College dropped a 30-20 decision to Trine.  My Wisconsin Badgers blew a 17-point lead in a 30-27 loss at Nebraska.  Ferris St. lost to Saginaw Valley 31-24Grand Valley held on to score a 51-43 win over Michigan Tech.   They were up 51-14, then gave up 29 consecutive points.  Also, how do you score 63 points and still lose?   The U.S. team sure crashed in golf’s Ryder Cup at Medinah C.C. just west of Chicago.  I played golf a couple times before as an Evans Scholar.

Then there’s the Lions…losers of 10 of their last 16 games since they started last year 5-0.  They are 1-3 for 2012 so far.  They have a bye week and won’t play next Sunday.

Not a great day for the Tigers… or WOOD? ;) Bill, the forecast page is showing 91 for today and then 80′s for quite a while…. I wouldn’t mind one more round of that but I’m guessing it will not happen!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

We are in the process of waking up the appropriate person to fix this. I’ll also leave here (Art Museum) and go back to the station and see if I can reset the computers and see if that fixes things.

      1. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

        BRING BACK THE 90′S!! :)

Great weekend for sports in Michigan! First, I’ll say MSU pulls out a close one with the Buckeyes. The Tigers needs to WIN OUT. I’ll call yesterday’s loss a hiccup because they have been playing outstanding. I also think Coke didn’t really help Smiley! C’mon TIGERS! Keep your foot on the gas and don’t let up!!!
Lets see if you can get the AL Central locked up! The Lions need to come out on FIRE against the Vikings. Hint: Stafford to Megatron! Are you listening Linehan?
I say the Lions get in done!!
Michigan will not lose as they are not playing this weekend!

  4. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

  8. Brad says:

Boring blog day, but the churchers usually get busy after their fiery Sunday morning sermons. Here’s a review of Rasmussen’s polls: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/04/rasmussen-polls-were-biased-and-inaccurate-quinnipiac-surveyusa-performed-strongly/.

    1. Jack says:

      Spam…No Thanks…

      1. Brad says:

        Data analysis is spam? WOW.

        1. Kimoeagle says:

Skewed data analysis is spam. WOW. No thanks.

        2. Brad says:

LOL, you are living in another universe. It’s amazing how this meme has spread among the conservative “unintelligentsia.”

        3. Bill Steffen says:

Actually, I spoke at Coopersville Reformed Church Sunday morning on Creation…it was positive (a little humor) and the church was full.

Rasmussen was the #1 pollster in 2008: http://www.fordham.edu/images/academics/graduate_schools/gsas/elections_and_campaign_/poll%20accuracy%20in%20the%202008%20presidential%20election.pdf

    2. Dan says:

Define “churchers” and your definition of a fiery Sunday morning sermon?
Is there a link between this and the Rasmussen poll? Seems to me it would make much more sense if you posted actually data from the groups with side by side comparison. Just saying…

    3. michael g (SE GR) says:

Quite a judgemental post for someone so offended by judgemental Christians.

    4. Hugh says:

Funny, how churchgoers are happy, contented, smiling, and don’t need sprites

        1. Hugh says:

Dan, this was posted under my name. I meant it for you. sorry, enjoy Too reiterate, picky.

    5. bobcat says:

No fiery sermon at all, Brad. We just joined together as believers to pray and worship. We prayed for our country, our children, and for those who want to take our country away from us. There was no talk of ‘left’ or ‘right’. Nor was their talk of Democratic or Republican. The sermon gave new insights to some Biblical truths (always interesting!). Mostly, we join together on Sundays to worship and praise the only One Who is totally in control. Feeling sad if you miss out on that. Re-think it… Please?

  9. Dan says:

    “actual” not actually.

  10. Dan says:

Big win for the Tigers! Nice outing by JV, not so much for Benoit.
C’mon Cabby you can get the Triple Crown. He’ll hit two home runs today!

  11. michael g (SE GR) says:

Snow missing us to the south on the first weekend of October?? Impressive!

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

    2. Barry in Zeeland says:

Always good news when it’s anywhere but here!!

    3. Kimoeagle says:

IMHO — You know, that’s interesting, because the moisture flow has been tracking in that ENE direction through the Ohio Valley, etc. (jet stream guidance?) — and all it would take would be a sufficiently COLD front to bounce off that flow – and presto, white stuff!!! :-)

    4. fixxxer says:

Mike must be related to joe b.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Just not in the same way you and your mom are related fiz.

        1. fixxxer says:

Mature reply mike. Your a real “ass”et here. ;)

  12. Dan says:

Tigers win a close one, 2-1! Now, we need one more loss by the White Sox and that should just about do it.

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Magic # is 1, they have a 99 % chance to reach the playoffs. Would likely play Baltimore or New York.

      1. Jack says:

        Tigers Will CASHIN…The Magic #…1…… TONIGHT..Go Tigers…..Champagne On ICE TONIGHT…. :-)

  13. kevin. w says:

WOW! What a huge change on this map and what I see developing could be a noticable trend with the weather pattern shaping up….http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/30day/

    1. fixxxer says:

      Heard that one before! ;)

      1. Cort S. says:

I can’t vouch for the second half of the month, but the return to cool weather soon is looking quite predictable as a longwave trough deepens back down into the center of the country.

This is very similar to how that longwave trough amplified over the center of the country a couple weeks ago, which was well-predicted by the CPC a week in advance (which you also scoffed at).

        1. fixxxer says:

          Oh cort…you and your data.

  14. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Well, it was a gorgeous day today. Thank the Lord for that. However, other than the Tigers, this weekend sucked sportswise. The Lions offense and special teams were horrible. As much as I love Jason Hanson, perhaps the Lions need to think about making a change on kick-offs. They need to kick the ball deep into the end zone to minimize the potential run backs. The Lions are 6 and 10 since their 5 and 0 start last year. That in itself should raise a red flag. Finally, the American Ryder Cup team folded up like a lawn chair today. The Euros played decently, but the American team just plain stunk! We only needed four guys to win their matches, and one guy to halve, out of twelve. We failed rather miserably.

    1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Of course I forgot: Michigan did not lose. But they did not play either.

  15. Bob P :o) says:

seeing auroras here in St.Johns tonight

  16. Yup (Grandville) says:

I was at the MSU game… it was terrible. A missed field goal (would have won it), and the officials blowing the whistle on a recovered fumble that would have been a run back for a TD without a doubt. It was terrible!

      1. Yup (Grandville) says:

  17. Jack says:

Tigers 2012 A.L. Central Div. CHAMPS..!!!!!!!!!!!! Miggy Rules.!!!! :-)

  18. Jevon Murphy (Chicago) says:

It very well looks like that if the Lions don’t get it together over this bye-week, then they could very well be in trouble for the playoffs! Looks like they got a tough schedule ahead, with Vick and the Eagles next, Then the seahawks, then the Bears!

They can only lose 3 more games to have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs, and only 4 or 5 more for a wildcard berth!

    Reguardless, Gooooooooo Lions!!!!
