Happy Thanksgiving – Sports Thread

November 22nd, 2012 at 12:01 am by under Bill's Blog, Sports, Weather

Happy Thanksgiving.   Thanksgiving means the Detroit Lions are on TV (they can sell car commercials…watch especially for Ford commercials during the game  and that’s one of the reasons Detroit held onto this Thanksgiving game while they have been a weak team).  Today the Lions face a third loss in a row with Houston (9-1) coming to Ford Field.  The Lions have lost 8 Thanksgiving Day games in a row, by an average of 21 points (35-14).  There are 3 NFL games today back-to-back-to-back.  Detroit and Houston start the action at 12:30 PM.  The Lions (4-6) are fast fading from the playoff picture.   The evening game is New England at the Jets and that game is at 8:20 PM on WOOD, TV-8.  There are Friday and Saturday high school playoff games at Ford Field and we wish our local teams the best.  Temperatures will be falling a bit during the day Friday and Saturday will be chilly there with a chance of flurries and temperatures much of the day in the mid 30s.  Central Michigan (5-6) plays at Massachusetts (1-10) (which also played Michigan and Western Michigan this year) at 3 PM.   Saturday is the big Michigan-Ohio State game.  The weather in Columbus looks partly sunny and maybe 38-40 (kind of chilly).  That game is on WOTV4.   MSU heads to Minnesota with both teams really in need of a win.  That game is on the Big Ten Network.  Notre Dame tries to keep their perfect record intact at USC.  That game is an 8:20- PM start and it’s on WOTV4.

Bill, whats lacking with this cold front friday night/saturday? It looks like some pretty cold air coming over a relatively warm lake michigan. Seems like we should be talking about more snow than a dusting to an inch, no?

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

There’s probably gonna be very limited moisture.

    1. CVS says:

I will never root for GR Christian.
They steal the best public school athletes, pay their tuition, so they can win championships.
And they do it all with Christian on their jerseys…….so sad!
Change the name of your school to GR Sports Academy and I will respect that a little more.

      1. Jack says:

        1. CVS says:

  2. Dan says:

I say the Lions get up for this game. They play very well and Stafford goes off for 4 touchdowns, two of these will be to Megatron! Lions win in a close one 31-28! GO lIONS! Michigan goes into Columbus to beat the nuts. (Buckeyes)
Michigan gets the win by that potent offense they are running with Denard and Devin. Michigan’s Defense makes the right adjustments to slow down and even stop Miller. Michigan beats Ohio 38-34!

    1. Katie in Kentwood says:

They had that game against the Packers! They were playing really well. I swore they were going to win but that last minute touchdown they let through was it, and the blown off pass interference non-call that would have eliminated the first down that gave the packers that field goal. The Lions play excellent defense, I only hope their offense is on top today! Still a Lions fan through and through, go Lions!

  3. Sharon L'Anse, MI says:

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Bill. We are thankful that the Lions is NOT what Thanksgiving means to us…every blessing to you and your family.

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No arctic air in sight, therefore no SNOWSTORMS IN SIGHT!!!!

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Normals now are the same as late March, neither time is known for it’s frequent snow storms. Three straight months of near to below normal temps, and the pattern shows no sign of changing. Long range forecasts from most outlets are for near to slightly below normal temps and near to above normal snowfall, and just as important, the forecasts are trending colder with each update.

      Winter is coming!!

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The models keep showing cold air in the long range and then when you actually get closer to those dates the cold air is non existent! Same as last year when all of the hype about above average snowfall was running rampant!!

        1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Not one mention of models in my post.

  5. Dan says:

What about tomorrow afternoon? Doesn’t COLD air come in courtesy of a strong cold front?

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Not real cold and short lived.

  6. Bnoppe says:

I would feel more confident in the chance for snow next week if it was the ECH showing the sow instead of the GFS

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The GFS model is horrible at predicting any type snowstorms more than 3 days out!!

  7. INDY says:

Happy Turkeyday Bill, bloggers get ready lake effect snow warnings coming!! I hope fizzer stuffs his face today with turkey!!! Go Lions!! From still drinking eating and singing have a great day!! INDYY..

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Nice thing about fizzz’s Thanksgiving, no matter what’s on the menu, there’s always a turkey around.

  8. CVS says:

No long lasting cold air in sight…….perhaps late December, but that is also a crapshoot.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No doubt and we may be heading for another bust of a winter. There are no signs of any arctic air or any decent snowstorms on the horizon!

    2. Jack says:

      Liar + Fool = CVS

  9. CVS says:

If I had to make a winter prediction it would look like this from what I see and the research I have done:
    Snowfall: 58 inches
Temp’s: For the most part above normal with 2 or 3 Artic Blasts in mid Jan -early Feb.
I would predicted 1 major snowstorm during that time frame with 12 plus inches of snow.
March-April……cooler than average with below normal precipitation.
There you have it, the GR Official Winter Prediction…..

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I think that your snowfall estimate is high and I will be very surprised to see a snowstorm with more than 12 inches of snow!

    2. Jack says:

      Liar+ Fool = Cvs

  10. Nathan says:

I dont like making predictions because they are never accurate. We have to wait and see how December starts out before we even think of saying if it will be a warm or cold winter.

  11. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I am liking the “update” part as of 11:30….sounds better for snow.

The extended for the beginning of December is ugly though. It looks like more Pacific air to keep us mild. Blah.

  12. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Happy Thanksgiving, Bill’s Blog! Today, one thing I am thankful for fellow weather nuts. Whether we are praying for snow or sunshine, we all have others to share our weather obsession with. :)

I’ll drink some “Sprites” in your honor today, bloggers! :)

  13. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

    Sounds good to me!

    AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
    1243 PM EST THU NOV 22 2012

    .SYNOPSIS…
ISSUED AT 341 AM EST THU NOV 22 2012

A WINDY AND WARM THANKSGIVING DAY IS ON TAP FOR LOWER MICHIGAN.
TEMPERATURES WILL WARM INTO THE LOWER 60S AS GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS
BRING THE WARM AIR UP INTO MICHIGAN. THE WARMER AIR WILL BE SHORT
LIVED HOWEVER AS A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA LATE
TONIGHT. RAIN SHOWERS AND EVEN A SLIGHT CHANCE OF A RUMBLE OF
    THUNDER WILL BE POSSIBLE.

THE COLDER AIR WILL FILTER INTO THE AREA DURING THE DAY ON FRIDAY.
TEMPERATURES WILL FALL THROUGH THE DAY INTO THE 30S. RAIN SHOWERS
WILL CHANGE OVER TO SNOW SHOWERS. SOME LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE
    POSSIBLE FOR THE LAKESHORE COMMUNITIES.

    &&

    .UPDATE…
ISSUED AT 1122 AM EST THU NOV 22 2012

I DID SOME SIGNIFICANT GRID UPDATES LATE THIS MORNING. I UPDATED
THE START OF THE GALE WARNING AND I INCREASED THE POP FOR BOTH
    TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.

BASED ON THE LATEST DATA FROM BOTH THE NAM12 AND HRRR IT SEEMS TO ME
THE WINDS WILL RAMP UP SOONER OVER LAKE MICHIGAN AND OUR NEAR
SHORE WATERS. THE NAM12 SOUNDING AT MKG…BIV…LDM AND THE SOUTH
BUOY SHOW 40 TO 45 KNOTS IN THE MIX LAYER BY 21Z. CLOUDS MAY BE AN
ISSUE BUT AT 21Z I COULD SEE THERE NOT BEING A LOT OF CLOUDS YET.
AS A RESULT I BROUGHT FORWARD IN TIME THE START OF THE GALE
WARNING TO 4 PM FROM 10 PM.

THE NAM12 IS NOW SHOWING DEEPER MOISTURE FOR BOTH THE
PRECIPITATION EVENT TONIGHT AND THE LAKE ENHANCED SNOW FOR FRIDAY
AFTERNOON INTO SATURDAY MORNING. FOR THE MOST PART MY POP GRID IS
REALLY BASED ON THE LIFT IN THE SATURATED DGZ GRID FROM THE NAM12.
THAT HAS TIME AND AGAIN SHOWN ME TO BE THE MOST RELIABLE TOOL FOR
FORECASTING PRECIPITATION (RAIN/SNOW AND EVEN TIMING OF
THUNDERSTORMS IF THAT IS APPROPRIATE). THE SOUTHERN STREAM
MOISTURE (SEEN WELL ON THE WATER VAPOR LOOPS) IS STREAMING
NORTHEAST AND WILL RUN INTO THE FRONTAL ZONE LIFT BY MID
AFTERNOON. THIS SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM SPARKING SHOWERS AND
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS AS THERE IS A 50 – 70 KNOT LOW LEVEL JET
WITH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES OVER 300 PCT OF NORMAL JUST AHEAD
OF THE FRONT. I SEE NO REASON WHY I SHOULD NOT GO CONDITIONAL
GIVEN THE DEEP MOISTURE…STRONG LIFT AND STRONG FRONT WITH A GOOD
    SOUTHERN STREAM SHORTWAVE.

AS FOR FRIDAY… THERE IS NOW BETTER LIFT IN THE DGZ ON THE NAM12
FOR THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW EVENT FRIDAY INTO FRIDAY NIGHT. I HAVE TO
LOOK AT THIS MORE CLOSELY BY WE MAY HAVE TO INCREASE SNOWFALL
    AMOUNTS.

After the 12z euro and ensemble runs about an hour ago the AO is -2.5 and the NAO is going toward -2 so somethings brewing but who knows what and where.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

When are they at those values?

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        Near the end of November.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

That would be nice…the real question: does it last or is it in and out?

    2. Brian(Grandville) says:

Looks like the GFS is showing us on the N.W. side of Tuesdays system. What are your thoughts?

  15. ~Sherry~(Comstock Park) says:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We have great weather today and for that we can all be thankful. A white weekend would be nice!

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Let it snow!

  16. Barry in Zeeland says:

This must be why we’re having such warm thanksgiving days now:

    http://news.yahoo.com/greenhouse-gases-hit-record-high-2011-162334236.html

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I remember Thanksgiving 2005 I believe by the end of the day it was near zero, with several inches of LES. That was only 7 years ago. Wasn’t very warm that day.

      1. Barry in Zeeland says:

I remember we use to be skiing and snowmobiling on turkey day years ago. We have not done that anytime in the last 15 or 20 years. Winters here used to start my mid Nov and last for 4 solid months. Now they start in maybe Jan and are done by mid or late Feb., or like last year never really happen.

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I remember skiing at Crystal Mountain a few times the day after Thanksgiving in the late 90′s. Also ice fishing on gun lake the last week of November around 2004.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          Those days are over!

      2. michael g (SE GR) says:

Yeah, that was my son’s first Thanksgiving. We didn’t get as much lake effect as they predicted, only 3 or 4 inches, but I do remember strong west winds and a mid afternoon temp around 13*.

  17. kevin. w says:

This page should update here shortly but take a look http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/daily_ao_index/teleconnections.shtml.

Can’t show you what the Euro has because thats a paid site and don’t want to lose that privilege.

Scroll to “today’s extremes”…always interesting to see northern lower Michigan being the warmest and southeast MI being the coldest…my guess: clouds up north

  19. Dan says:

What about the Storm that the models are hinting at for Tuesday? Does it look good or will the temps favor rain rather than snow? The local METS are not committing to this just yet. It could get interesting!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No snow nest week. It is all hype!!!

  20. Kimoeagle says:

AHEM! a 28-6 victory over Ohio University yesterday put the cherry on No. 23 Kent State’s 11-1 season that includes an 8-0 Mid-American Conference East record and first appearance in next Friday’s conference championship game. i

  21. Kimoeagle says:

So — Kent State, Nr. 23 in the AP polls, will be playing Northern Illinois, Nr. 24 in the AP polls, on Nov. 30 at Ford Field (YIP?) for the MAC championship.

  22. Kimoeagle says:

Ahem. To quote SB Nation: “No. 22 Northern Illinois and No. 17 Kent State represent possible BCS busters. The two teams will meet in the MAC Championship, with the winner potentially moving up in the standings. If the winner finishes above the Big East champion in the final BCS standings, a BCS bowl berth is guaranteed.” Go, Flashes!!!
